The quality of a seed packet is a good reason for choosing a seed company. Many seed packets are similar in presenting helpful and necessary information for gardeners, but a few rise above average. Gardener Scott reviews seed packets from 20 seed companies and highlights his favorites. (Video #423)

Great company and high quality seed, but wow, are they slow to ship orders. That's a huge differentiator that Scott didn't cover in this video. Some of these companies turn orders around in a few days, and others need literally weeks or months to process a basic order.

I think the quality of the seed is the most important factor. I've also noticed some seed suppliers are trying to keep the price reasonable by keeping the quantity of seeds per package low.

Botanical interest also love that they enclose the seeds in a packet inside that also insure against moisture loss of the seed. I bought some 16 and 40 dram pill vials from local pharmacy that i cut the small tag section off Botanical package and taped to the outside of the 16 dram vial and slipped the packet inside to store the seeds i do no use the first time. the little extra from seed companies shows in their package i have gotten seeds in a waxed paper sleeve inside of a zip lock. or gotten seeds that were packed in a foil pack and sealed so no moisture loss or oxidization of the seeds. then all the vials packed in a simple container and slipped into fridge for cool storage

Love those Botanicals Interests seed packets. Unfortunately they don't do international anything so I will just have to make do with their digitial catalogue. But at least I can get some extra data. One thing I do love to find on a seed packet is an image of what the seedling will look like. There is nothing more frustrating that planting seeds and not knowing which is a seedling I want to keep, and which is a weed. It takes time and experience to learn and extra help early on can be nothing but good.

After watching this video, I really appreciates ALL of the efforts that David's Garden Seeds goes though for NOT only their seed packets but actually including a "thank you for buying" on one side and GENERAL information from the OWNER himself. The packets themselves explains in my opinion the best of every world on relevancy of the plants, what's it's best grown at, any "special needs" of the seeds, plants, etc. So information you care to know, whether if you NEVER gardened before, or even if you did (I didn't even know worms EATS seeds and that's why you NEED a seeds' starting mix to make sure they sprouts and nothing like that happens!). So even after watching this video, if I can find the general plant I am looking for there, that's about the only place I WILL be ordering from. EVEN if it over just ONE packet. :)

After spilling water on so many packets when I was getting my seeds planted, I started putting a small ziploc baggie inside the packet with the type written in a silver sharpie marker, then I use painter's tape to reseal the actual envelope/packet. That has been working brilliantly for some time now. I'm with you - even though I'm a very experienced gardener, it's still nice to have info and a nice picture!

@@dustyflats3832 I am so naturally clumsy, I don't trust myself and try to prevent any mishaps before they can happen. Haha! I bought a pack of 500 ziploc baggies from Amazon for about $5 dollars or so. They're 2" x 3", so they fit perfectly in any seed packet and will hold even large seeds like those for cucurbits or morning glories. After ruining a favorite pack of seeds, I decided enough was enough and went to this method. The baggies are also great if I want to swap seeds with a friend!

Enough to plant flowers and veggies but if I have 20 beds I would’ve experiment so many seeds even if I don’t use them all. Good review of seed packets. I often make copies for those companies who only do the description and instructions in the catalog and then attach the copies to the packet. I have a gardening friend and we swap seeds back and forth so I found some miniature plastic ziploc bags at a craft store to use for seed saving, storing and sharing. I also transfer seeds that I keep on hand into the little zipper bags and make a label to attach and then slip the closed bag back into the packet. When I have used up the seeds, I can wipe out the little bag, remove the label and re-use so I can limit the amount of plastic I use. Botanical Interests is one of my favorites and located right here in Colorado, they just sold to another company so hope that they continue with their high quality.

It is just too hot/humid here in New England in the summer - the fungal disease pressure is just too high. That is why I recommend our regional seed sources -- Fedco - or Johnny’s. Yes, the seed packets are geared to farmers. But, with their seeds - selected to thrive here - you are also more likely to get a great harvest - inspiring people to keep growing…

MI Gardener has a very good video tour of his new building and the seed rooms in it. He shows how the seeds are sorted into their packages - some by hand and some by machine. He gets his seeds from small local seed farmers, so he knows exactly where they come from. I always put a paper clip on the packets after I open them, just to make sure the seeds stay in there.

Lots of good information there! I have looked into Botanical Interests, especially now that they’re owned by Epic Gardening, but I just can’t get over the cost of the seeds compared to MIGardener. $2 for a pack of seeds is a great deal and I get so much info from Luke’s KZfaq Channel that I don’t really need more info on the packet itself. Another company I buy from is North Circle Seeds and I love how they’re specifically grown in MN and ND for gardeners in this area. The info on the packets helps me as a MN gardener to know what works in my climate, which is super valuable when it’s so different here vs. other places.

Got my 1st packet of Botanical Interest seeds 3 years ago, among several other seed companies. I was so intrigued about the additional information on the inside of the packet, I opened every one of them. They also have one of the most beautiful seed catalogs out there. I guess I am at the point now, in most cases, I've done my research before buying new seeds. Since the focus here is on seed catalogs, I hope I can reach a larger industry audience to suggest a change be made to the industry. Since pollinators and all insects are in so much trouble, it would be excellent if catalogs divided their sunflower offerings into pollen and pollenless varieties. Most catalogs do indicate that, but for a lot of home growers who are trying to help the bees, they may not notice or comprehend the difference. Hopefully, this would steer them to plant the pollen-bearing varieties.

Great coverage! Yes, Burpee is the old standby for consistent info on pkt. I am a seasoned gardener and normally for the basic vegetables I don’t bother with the info; HOWEVER, I have recently ran into a dilemma! (My experience is not to down trod on any company as I will still remain their customer-just want new and seasoned gardeners to know it can happen to them) Celery & Artichokes Celery: Last year was my first try on celery and I winter sowed in jug. No problem. This year I thought maybe I’d try an early start and just now planted indoors and the instructions said depth: 1/8”. So I did. Then I watched numerous videos 😵‍💫. Cover seed/don’t cover seed over and over again along with light/no light and heat? It’s no wonder many don’t succeed. So I tried to ask this question to several of my trusted KZfaq sources that generally answer back-Crickets! So this must be a problem. This morning I called Jung’s Seed from where the seeds originated and I was put on hold while the clerk sought out the info for Tango Celery.😂. I’m tellin ya it shouldn’t be this hard😅 and she said yes they need light so no need to cover, but ok if you did a light sprinkle 😵‍💫😵‍💫but the pkt. says 1/8”. So I may or may not see them as it takes up to 14 days-we’ll see or maybe not😂 Artichokes: This one is new to me. I chose the least day to maturity Green Globe from Seed Saver Exchange. Start 8-12 wks indoors @1/4”, takes 10-20 days to germinate, 36” apart at planting in full sun, it’s hardy, 3-5’ tall, PRODUCTIVE in climates as cool as Z3! 75 days to maturity after transplanting. “Grows as an annual in Z3-6 and perennial Z7 and higher. What’s not to like-right? Well if it wasn’t for Susan’s in the Garden in WA Z5b I wouldn’t have known these needed vernalization.😮. I’m sure I would not have had a chance at seeing any chokes. I purchased at local garden center, but online at SSE there is a small note saying ‘Vernalization’ recommended for Z3-6! 😮😮There it was, hidden away online! So if I hadn’t heard of this by chance video, I wouldn’t have succeeded. I may not have ever tried it again and just brushed it off as a tropical plant that doesn’t belong. Right now the seeds are in a bag of damp dirt in the fridge having their winter🥶 for 2 weeks or so and then hit the dirt and once ready a bit more cold of 50*F or so. Wonder if below zero tonight would speed things up🤓 So even for a seasoned gardener that wanted to try something out of the ordinary info on the packet is necessary. I LOVE Botanical Interest and Renee’s Garden art work so much I will create a collage to frame. Dabbled with water color art and love it. Absolutely love the info!! It is so nice to see perennial, annual, heirloom listed front and center when perusing the rack of packets screaming “PICK ME! PICK ME!”❤❤ I’m one that would prefer, usage, plant info, recipes over history. Yes, I’m planting history, but if it doesn’t grow did it really happen?🧐🤔😉🤣 What do you think? Cover or not to cover celery seed? Z5a.

I lightly cover seeds like that. Because my air is so dry a little potting mix on top helps the seed stay moist and doesn't seem to affect germination much.

I like you "Dusty Flats"! Thanks for the celery advice. I just got some seeds from Baker Creek, (a very thin variety with lots of leaves, I've learned cullinarilly that using only leaves, adds just enough celery flavor in dishes where my family would prefer having no celery at all.

You can use a small sprinkling of vermiculite on top to keep the seeds moist and still allow light in. I’ve been very successful with vermiculite to help with tough seeds like poppies. I did celery as a new gardener and just did a sprinkle of soil on top I think. Celery wasn’t that hard to germinate but was difficult for me to get the tall stalks. But I put them in small-ish spots in my garden so that might be why. Good luck!

@@umiluv i need to get vermiculite. Good idea! Last year winter sowed both celery and poppies and they were great. I don’t remember if I covered celery and not sure how long they took to germinate as I didn’t check them much. Trying for thicker stalks this year and now I know they are a bog type plant and are water hogs😊

I noticed this year many companies seed packets are containing a lot less seeds. This is going to be a major factor for me in choosing a seed supplier going forward.

I have purchased a few seeds from "Johnny's Seeds" while their customer service is most knowledgeable and helpful, and their seed packets have the vital info needed (no picture) , it's not easy to read . At least that has been my experience ... though I must confess , I am but a novice grower

What I find interesting is how many people are fooled into thinking seed companies somehow make the seeds. I know some seed companies are just packagers, while a few actually develop hybrids to sell. I always knew the only things that make a difference between seed packagers are quality assurance, quantity to price, selection, factual growing information, and customer service. I am happy buying seeds in a mini ziplock bag on eBay from a trusted seller, or those I will buy on sale elsewhere. Fancy artwork used for marketing says nothing about seed quality to me. When I heard Epic Gardening bought out Botanical Interests. It caught me off guard. I don't take buyouts at face value, but instead have a time will tell if it was a good thing, regardless of intentions. Packet wise I don't like those mylar versions. I like the Migardener resealable glue when needed. Fancy artwork is nice, but I don't buy seed packets for that. For me it is a desired variety, price, and quality that decides a sale at the minimum.

1. Open envelope tab carefully. 2. Place a piece of scotch tape just under where the glue seal was on the ENVELOPE. 3. To reseal, scotch tape along the length of the tab, leaving bottom half of the tape exposed. Fold tab and press exposed tape against the back of the tape on the envelope. It's now easy to peel the tape on the tab away from the back of the tape on the envelope. Don't peel the tape off the tab itself. If you still have seeds left after the tab tape wears out, cut the worn exposed section of tape off with scissors and put a new piece on.

Before ordering "organic" seeds, or any seeds, ask which country they are grown in. I was shocked recently to find my favorite company actually sells seed grown in China.

For seeds Johnny's, Territorial, and Botanical Interests (a Colorado company) are perennial favorites. The people at Johnny's are lovely and helpful when you call. I also appreciate their comparison charts very much - I've spent some quality time with their winter squash charts, as I'm planning to grow what is probably too many of them this year including their newly released small, long storing kabocha. BI was the first type of seed I bought when I started gardening here in CO back in the day. Where do you buy the resealable packets for saving seed you showed? Red

I think it is important to note that Botantical Interests in some cases can bury key information inside the seed packet such as squash vine length. That sort of information needs to be on the back, and needs to be cultivar specific
