Tony Avent leads you on a tour through the gardens discussing Hostas. This is part of our free 15 minutes garden chat series, Gardening Unplugged, held each day during our Open Nursery & Garden Weekends.
Complete transcript and additional pics of hostas featured in this video can be found at - www.plantdelights.com/blogs/v...
Primarily native to prairies of China, Japan, and Korea, hostas have been grown in America for over 150 years. Currently, there are over 6,000 cultivars, of which at least 500 are distinct and garden-worthy. We continually evaluate the introductions from the country's best breeders, choosing those that represent the best and most unique. For best performance, hosta plants prefer woodland garden conditions...light shade to a couple of hours of morning sun. Hostas are often touted as the best shade-loving plants for the perennial garden. Inter-plant with evergreen or wintergreen plants to fill in when your hostas are dormant. Flowering in summer, the purple or white hosta flowers can be combined with other summer flowering plants with white or purple flowers. White, cream, and yellow variegated hostas stand out best when surrounded by solid green plants. Blue hostas stand out best when set off with complementary colors like pink and white flowers. Fine textured plants like carex and ferns play well with the bold texture of hostas leaves.

Tony says that smoe blue hostas like sun, others shade. I thougt and I noticed, that the blue on hostas is a wax. When I put a blue hosta in the sun, the wax smelts away - the leaf is now green!

This area of the garden receives supplemental irrigation, so they soil stays moist even underneath the trees.

I'm late to finding this video. I have a terrible vole problem here in southern NH. I cannot find Rozol. Is this product still available?

I have a question: About 2 months ago I bought a Behemoth on E bay. It got lost for 6 weeks in a Post office. Last week the box got delivered with fork lift tire tracks and flattened. I opened it up and to my surprise, the paper towels it was wrapped in were still damp. The leaves were of course dead.. I took the small clump of dirt that hat had white roots and planted it. I'm now showing a tiny nub that is green and my be a viable plant. along side this little nub is a chunk of woody stem about 1" in diameter. Should I just see what this woody stem does or try to divide it?

I am not sure why a hosta would have a woody stem, unless it is the remnants of an old bloom stalk. If the plant was traumatized with 6 weeks in a crushed box, I would not stress it further by trying to divide it. It sounds like it starting to put up new growth, so that is an encouraging sign. Hostas are extremely durable perennials.

Truth&Dogs Chell I don't have a problem with the speaker. I would just like to see the Hostas up close as he is talking about the difference between them.. just so I can identify my own. 👍🏻

I agree. The filming lacks good closeups of the processes he is talking about. Sheila was not being rude. Instead, 'truth &' is the rude individual.
