Have you heard of Mangave? These beautiful intergeneric hybrids of Agave and Manfreda were first named in 2005. Unlike Agaves, x Mangaves have softer foliage and monocarpic rosettes that produce basal offsets so the clump doesn't die after flowering. The growth rate of x Mangaves are also up to 3-4 times as fast as Agaves, so they quickly fill a summer container - perfect plants for a colorful sunny succulent patio garden! Learn more about these wonderful perennials from our Grounds and Research Supervisor Jeremy Schmidt.

Plant Delights Nursery is an award winning nursery in Raleigh, NC near Garner. We specialize in rare, and unusual perennials and we strive to carry a wide selection of exotic plants, cold hardy tropical plants, and native plants. Many of our best perennials are available nowhere else in the US as they represent rare plants collected by Plant Delights founder Tony Avent during his more than 60 plant hunting expeditions to places like China, Crete, Taiwan, South Africa and Argentina or distributed by some of the many specialty plant organizations of which Plant Delights is a member.

I have a dozen varieties ofMangave and 7:44 Praying Hands is one of my favorites. Thought Cherry Chocolate Chip was... But it is a Manfreda!! Can't wait to see how my larger varieties like Desert Dragon, Falling Waters, and Aztec King do. Cannot stop the Pineapple Express from pupping..I actually plantsd mature plants two month ago, and they have done just fine here down to the mid-twenties with no cover.

Thank you for sharing! We are always interested in how our plants perform in other zones. Where are you located?

I live in central coastal texas9a, l have been growing agave and mangave for 20 yrs! . When it gets really cold ( rarely here) like for instance, when the polar vortex hit! I just pull them up and leave them barefoot for about a month and replant them , they take off like nothing happened, that is the joy of succulents, roots are optional

Wow! It's true though, they make new roots quite easily while a frozen crown spells sure death.

Enjoyed this video. Thanks! I can report that Mangave variety bad hair day lost all foliage but resprouted and looks fine now. Endured 20f in a container last winter with cold dry winds snd our pacific NW 8b moist winter.

Glad to hear your Mangave 'Bad Hair Day' has recovered! Cold dry wind desiccates the foliage leading to more winter damage.

Are mangaves prone to leaf spot in humid/high rainfall areas? I have an agave ovatifolia and it struggles with our hot, wet summers (Carolina Lowcountry).

We have a video about growing Agaves in south east where Tony explains best growing conditions. The audio is not great (the mic died while filming), but I hope you will check it out: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mryjfLel3Z_IiX0.html

Currently, the most winter hardy selections (zone 7b and south) are x Mangave ‘Blue Mammoth’ (Agave ovatifolia x Manfreda maculosa), ‘Falling Waters’ (Agave ovatifolia x Manfreda sp.), ‘Bad Hair Day’ (Agave gemniflora x Manfreda maculosa). Although still under hardiness trials, x Mangave ‘Aztec King’ (Manfreda jalisciana x Agave ovatifolia x Agave pseudoferox) and x Mangave ‘Navajo Princess’ (Manfreda maculosa x Agave montana) should also be fine in zone 7b.

@@Plantdelights THANK YOU! Also what's the difference between Mangave Falling Waters, Whale Tale and Blue Mammoth? They look very similar and all three are Zone 7b hardy.

I have what I believe to be an inkblot mangave. I live in zone 6b in Lancaster pa. I have it in a pot and I take it in in the winter and never water it in winter. Looks great unlike all my other succulents that etoliate in winter even w grow lights. It's in it's second season outside facing southwest and protected by partial shade ...and it is already blooming. I already got about 7-8 small pups off of it but since cutting them out and giving them away, it hasn't produced anymore pups yet. I see some folks get pups ON the flower stalk itself after blooming?

Yes, some Mangave and Agave produce plantlets of the flower stalk. I can't tell you if yours will. The crown that flowered usually dies, so we recommend keeping a couple of offsets to keep your plant going.
