The film features four-year-old Zachary, who suddenly developed a severe stammer just after his third birthday, making him so distressed he felt he couldn't speak anymore. But with the help of the British Stammering Association, Zachary got the help he needed through early intervention speech and language therapy. He is now back to the happy, confident boy he was before.

brilliant cause and as a person who stammers myself, this is really takes me to heart, once i was on a bus, asking for my ticket, stuttering, and i have gotten myself into a way of saying sorry for stuttering, the bus driver was so supporting, i felt better after he said "what you saying sorry for?"

i've only know a few people with stammers; one lad had a severe one- you just had to let him talk and not rush him or try and 'jump in' and finish sentences for him. i can imagine it being hard; people need to be educated, really.

I have been a great admirer of Gareth Gates but I wish he would kindly correct himself that stammering is NOT a neurological disorder, there have been no conclusive studies to prove so. Stammering is accentuated by nervousness, anxiety and shyness. Ever wondered why a stammerer can speak fluently when he's alone or around the people he's close to?

Um... As a person with a stammer, I can't speak fluently even around just my mom and dad.

Jordan Halkier Yet there are others who can speak in front of their family members or friends but not in front of strangers? Every one's stutter is unique and it'd be outrageous to call this habit a neurological disorder. Do you stutter when you are alone? Neither of you have answered my question but put forth your own logic and claimed that I know nothing about stammering. Truth be told, stuttering is still such a big mystery today. It can vary in intensity from day to day, situation to situation, person to person and most of all within a person. There are days when I am absolutely fluent and days when I can't get a word out. If it was a neurological disorder, the intensity of my stutter would be constant. Anyway, try and open your mind to what I have said rather than outright rejecting it. I was in your place before. I was a severe stutterer who could not speak if his life dependent on it. I was suicidal. But therapy has brought me a long way in beating this habit. I did not take any medicines or undergo any operation to cure my so called "neurological disorder". If it were so, breathing techniques and fluency shaping wouldn't change our neurology.

+Razor Ex it is neurological because I stammer when I am speaking to myself or with my family, I rarely have good days with my stammer, mostly are bad, stammering has made me sucidal too in the past, also made me feel depressed and have very bad anxiety, thankfully I getting help for this. Stammering is very puzzling for society because all they see is a stammer they don't see the full extent of the impact that it has on the person, the emotional impact is so damaging this is why stammering is seen as a disability
@ceekay9253
@ceekay9253 8 жыл бұрын
Jordan Halkier Have you tried to seek help in the form of therapy or Self help groups in your area? I used to stammer too when I was alone. But I have improved from then on. It is indeed true that rarely do people see how debilitating stammering can be. One might even go to the extent of calling it a disability. But, how about we call it a habit? Just for ourselves and between the two of us? Because that's what it really is at the end of the day. Have you read Redefining Stuttering by John Harrison? If you haven't, I really suggest that you do. A simple google search would give you the top link to the pdf. I would also recommend reading Advice to those who stutter by The Stuttering Foundation, it's a compilation of the advice of 28 speech therapists who stutter/ed themselves. Please feel free to message me if you ever feel like talking to someone. My intention is not to argue but to help in whatever way I can. Because I have been down that path and at times still do walk it every now and then. But the fact that I have come such a long way is what keeps me going and gives me hope.

@@soeffingwhat yep, you're absolutely right ... I've been stammering since I was 4 years old (I'm 17 by now) and there are days on which I'm able to speak fluently even to the walls, other days on which I find difficult saying my surname or my e-mail, talking with my friends etc... (forgive my mistakes, please ... I'm not a native speaker)
