They have always over exaggerated our ability to win a tournament as they know failure will eventually create them a bigger bottom line afterwards. If you speak to most genuine England fans before a tournament we never tend to show much hope of winning it. All we ask for is a team that is giving 100% and manager who doesn't defend the players when they are not doing that.

I think Southgate tries to give England fans a reality check but looking at the comments here alone, England fans think they're a lot better than they actually are. Yes, it is dismissive to write off smaller nations. However, it is not arrogant to expect the richest FA in the world, the best paid manager at the tournament, with majority players from the "best league in the world" to finally be successful and play well consistently, instead of relying on luck, at an international tournament for the first time in 58 years, all for a country where the game was created and sustained.

@@jdaking7648 Yeah I watched Germany plough Scotland by 5, Spain put 3 past Croatia, Portugal put 3 past Turkey, Switzerland put 3 past Poland and so on and so forth. The only team in this tournament who scores a goal and then sits back is England. Maybe France are equally guilty, but they at least have the excuse of winning something recently playing the way Deschamps wants to play. England would probably already be Euro champs if they had been braver against Italy, rather than falling deep to defend a 1-0 lead. There is being pragmatic, and then there is being Gareth Southgate.

It's not arrogant to make a clear observation that we have the "easier" of the two halves of the knockout stage. There's no easy game in this tournament. But given how we have played recently, I don't understand why anyone would presume we are going to win easily. If you've watched the Swiss' games at all, you'd understand they are a good team.

Sir Gareth southgate is having results For England 🏴, they have made it to semi finals, I think as a player he has also played semi finals Of UEFA Euro cup 1996. We automatically assume that we have the best players and when they don’t perform, it’s not their fault, it’s the managers. This has been on since time begun and I fear will never change. Southgate has carried his defensive mindset from his playing days over to his management days. The only complaints I see are people wondering why the highest payed manager, with players who are some of the best in the world, are turning in performances reminiscent of mid table League 1 team? And it is a valid question. With the players and the way England are ranked it is unquestionable that we have an easy route.

I think he's right (and that's very rare for me). It's true that the draw looks EASIER for us on paper, but not easy. And why sound off about it? Just put yourself in a Swiss person's shoes. I'd be thinking, "They've won nothing in the modern era. Nothing at all. Even Denmark and Greece have won more than them. What makes them think they can win any game against anyone? Arrogant pricks".

Put him and us out of this misery. SACK him now, get in someone who has done more than get a club relegated. He has not a clue when it comes to tactics and football in general. Absolutely useless. I'd argue that if we had any other manager instead of him, England would've been Euro champions last tournament and probably world cup winners in his first world cup.
