Thank you for joining me again! Man i've missed my photography adventures!!
Still in lockdown here in Wales but as i was working near the stunning three cliffs bay in the Gower i thought i would take a trip down..
I adore my landscape photography and have missed heading out with my camera tremendously! However just being near the coast or on a mountain even without a camera is so important to me and my mental health! There's definitely a healing power in the outdoors, and i've definitely noticed the absence of it!
In this video i decided to incorporate and photography shoot and critique. Im not always happy with my photography after returning home so i thought id share my thoughts on these images..
Hope you enjoy the video!

I was at Oxwich bay last Saturday with my family. It was glorious. We had fish and chips at The Mumbles, we couldn’t park at Langland beach so we went further on to Oxwich. Glad to see you out and about. It’s surprising how we take things like this for granted. Great images Gareth.

Hi Gareth. Really enjoyed this video. I actually prefer the warmer image ! I go back to this location many times each year as it's brilliant for sunrise, sunset and astro images. Sunsets are best after the beginning of October when, as you said in your video, the sun is much further south. Can't wait to get back there as soon as Mr Drakeford sets us all free again !! Many thanks for sharing.

Hi Gareth, Great video... Beautiful place Three Cliff's Bay not been there for years, I would be happy with both photos. I sure will be glad when the Welsh Assembly relaxes our lockdown so we can get out and about again.

Very nice. Thanks for the vid. The cool version of your landscape feels more complete. There is a very nice balance of colors and contrast throughout the image.

I prefer image 1, love the way the sun lights up the rocks. Would of been interesting to see what lightroom would of produced if you’d merged them two images together. Great composition Gareth I’ll have a look at that next passing.

I've missed your landscape photography. Hopefully you'll come back to it with added enthusiasm. I think both of the shots, the golden or the blue are great, apart from the lack of separation between the main peak and the cliffs on the far side of the bay. Dropping the center column and pushing the peak above the horizon line (emphasising its height), sacrificing a bit of the beach I think would work better than raising the column quite some distance to get the pinnacle into the sea. Fluffier clouds would be nice, or a greater extent of high cloud to spread the pink/gold, but there's not much you can do about that on the day. Welcome back to the great outdoors :-)

Hi Gareth, I agree that peek encroaching into the land mass across the bay. As far as printing, I have just started printing with Fotospeed Platinum etching. A slightly warm, but contrasty paper, because it is a matt textured paper them rocks would look wonderful. I have been to the coast the last 3 weekends. One at Prawle point in the rain, but it made for some lovely moody images. There on my Instagram at Folksfoto. Inspiration when you are allowed out in the future if you fancy coming to Devon.

Great video Gareth, I think we all take things for granted no matter where we live in the world, I made a video this week where I said the exact same thing, (video out next week) Thanks for sharing.

Great to see you getting out again, I'm looking forward to visiting Snowdonia very soon. I preferred the first image due to the beautiful warm light on the rocks, by comparison the second image looked much colder and the rocks without the sunlight looked flatter.

I was jealous just looking at the 1st minute of that video - love 3 cliffs. Great location and cracking images. As you was going through them I was thinking the 1st image with the light but as you put the prints up my mind swayed immediately to the blue hour shot - which I found quite strange because the golden hour shot just felt right. I have done sunrise on the beach and had a few failed sunsets but to be honest it's a pleasure to shoot there at any time - moody skies work perfect from the location you shot at. Atb alan

Great vlog Gareth, I prefer the blue image, it's more restful on the eye.My only concern is that 3rd peak intersecting the far headland, it keeps drawing my eye. Still it's a great excuse to go back again to a fabulous place and twaek the composition.

I was just typing a comment to say that the peak should be lower so as to not intersect the headland and then you mentioned it :) I live near Carmarthen and always head towards Pembrokeshire. I really need to visit Swansea area by the looks of it.

Very nice mate. As I mentioned on FB I actually prefer the first image. The light is lovely. Second image is of course great as well. The more central sun position you mentioned should be late October ish.

I agree, the one peak intersecting the background landscape was not the best. I figured you were not able to elevate the camera more than you had. For you first image, being warmer, a bit more than you would want. What would you do differently?. I have take some that came out that way, to the point I did not enjoy the image, post processing just would not help and I wonder what I could do differently if I could do it over. Thanks for sharing your pleasant outing in nature again.

Nice to see you out in the landscape again Gareth. First reaction, I liked the first image better but after seeing the printed, I think I like the 2nd one better. I had to chuckle when you said, I'm alright, then again, I'm alright. Were you trying to convince yourself? I would have been nervous on that perch.

I had exactly the same deliberation as you about the highest peak and getting a breathing space above by going higher but I think the lighter water would have drawn the eye out of the frame to the left - difficult. enjoyed the vid thx.

I also had an issue with the highest peak even when viewing the video, and was anxious to see if Gareth altered the height of the camera. Raising the camera so that the peak had the sea in the background (as Gareth discussed) was probably impractical given the tripod location. If possible I would have lowered the camera so that the top of the peak was clearly delineated from the line of trees in the distant background, recognizing that Gareth would lose some of the sandy patch in the middle foreground. I like both the gold and blue versions.

Hi, Difficult choice to make though I feel the Blue wins purely because the rocks look more natural. One question though, what Paper did you print on?
@macjim

Is there any chance of you doing a programme on printers and printing please. Running costs, paper quality, A4/A3 and how you get what you see onscreen when printing out... Is A3 affordable for the none-professional?

yeah i have a few.. the MSR hubba is amazing but not a winter tent.. the Nordisk svalbard s1 is a super light 1 man and is bomb proof.. and the crux x2 storm which i adore as its big and strong but its too heavy unless the weather requires it..

It just goes to show that light isn't EVERYTHING. Composition is king, always! 'Good' light is just an ingredient but it's not ESSENTIAL. Me and Adam Gibbs disagree on this we were going back and forth as he believes light is everything. But if the composition is poor, you cannot polish a turd no matter how good the light is. That's my feelings anyways.
STOP using the wrong APERTURE.
