In NZ we call Garfish Piper though they are generally smaller. They are taste fantastic and favourites since we caught them off the wharf as kids. Bonito-belly bait and tiny hooks. Best way to cook is scale, gut, wash then put their spike through the base of the tail so they make a circle. Dust in flour then fast fry whole, turning once. When you straighten them out the meat falls off the bone. Delicious!

I used to love catching these in the Mid East. As soon as you get a hook in them they take off standing on their tail.

That looks like a mad feed mate! We have the tastiest Garfish in the world in Australia. The southern Garfish, when butterflied and lightly crumbed and fried or baked, makes the best fish burger or wrap with heaps of salad, tomatoes, a bit of cheese, fresh red or even caramelised onions, spicy chilli mayonnaise and a touch of sweet chilli sauce. Absolutely sublime tucker! 😋🤤🤤🤤🤤😀

In Oz we call those things Long Toms. Gar Fish are a mini version of them with a smaller beak.

In New Zealand our gar fish is called a " piper " and nowhere near as big as those . Similar taste to our flounder (flat fish) .... the scales come off so easy then remove the head and grab a rolling pin (beer bottle or whatever) and start from the tail and roll towards the head , all the bones and guts get pushed out ,clean the gut cavity and cook with skin on to your preferred method .... beautiful delicate white flesh ..... I've always preferred rolling them in salt and white pepper seasoned flour ,fry and a little drizzle of lemon juice just before eating...... Great now I'm hungus for some fish!!! :)

Instead of doing the pinwheel on the skewer oh, maybe you should have gone ahead and done a zigzag. That way all you had to do is enter one end of the tail and then switch back every time you entered it on the skewer. You would get a similar effect on the cooking, but it would make it easier to do. That looks so good!

Nice cook. I was the guy with the Instagram photo 😄 The marinade is a good idea. I made this with chicken before but never thought of doind it with fish. Have to try this when the garfisch arrive here at the Baltic sea. Usually they come at the end of April. But it was a cold winter. Even the large swarms of herring are still not here.

I often take these home for the table (especially when deeply hooked). I always get mocked by other anglers for eating them but if only they knew how good they were!

We have a very similar fish by the same name in Australia. Difference being they only have a protrusion from the lower jaw and therefore a tiny upwards facing mouth. We wouldn't dream of using a size 1 hook on Australian garfish, rather the smallest hooks we can buy. Those gar you caught would be considered the biggest of the big here and we class them as an awesome eating fish.

Get yourself a bottle of keylime wine and marinate that prepared needlefish in it for 30 min. Then brush with light sesame oil and grill then make into fish tacos. You can thank me later. Also goes really good with a watermelon salsa.

Here in Florida we like to distinguish between the freshwater garfish and the saltwater garfish in the video. We just call them needlefish. I never thought to call them garfish too, but that is what they are. The freshwater gar seems to be able to get much larger than the saltwater variant which is the reverse for almost all other fish species.

Wow, in Bulgaria and Greece we would only dream of such big Garfish (Needlefish)! That being said, it seems you wasted a lot of the fish meat just for those tiny fillets(I hope you did not throw all the rest of the fish). They only have onc central bone and and the rest is pure meat with no bones. What we do here - either fry them whole with some flower and marinate, or put them on the grill and then just take out the central bone.
