Great videos, thank you. There is a bit of a trick with removing the pins from the Fenix 7. I have a 3rd party nylon 22mm band which I wanted to put on to my Fenix 7 Sapphire Solar. Like you I found that is has shoulderless spring bars, so no lip to pull down and remove. I have a good spring bar removal tool and managed to get purchase on the pin by moving the body of the bar down a smidge. If you can get the tool between the lug and body of the bar you can get the pin down out of the lug. It’s a faff but does work and I put the band on the 7. If you can get the spring bars out this way then buy some 3rd party Fenix 6 spring bars with shoulders and add those to your 7, then you can flip bands/straps to your heart’s content. Hope that helps.

This is super late, but there is a "trick" to removing the spring bars that the watch bands attach to. Basically, you need to order the same size spring bar from Garmin, except for the Fenix 6/6S/6X since these bars are designed to be removable. You'll need to contact support to place the order, and it's about 2 dollars. Once they arrive, you can use a pair of pliers or wire cutters to remove the stock spring bars from your Fenix 7 or Epix 2 (they will be destroyed in the process) and replace them with the Fenix 6 spring bars.

Great video and thank you for sharing your views on F7X vs Epix 2. Three points of contemplation in selecting F7X or Epix2 are as follows: 1. DISPLAY: I like Amoled display, though never used non-amoled so not sure how will that affect my decision. 2. SOLAR POWER: Like the use of sun in charging F7X (where possible), instead of manual charge 3. SIZE: My wrist 7.5", though I currently wear 42mm size watch. I like the features of F7X 51mm but not sure how would this watch look and feel. I know you have done multiple videos and touched on these points. Nevertheless, like to request your perspective again. Thank you.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
Transflective displays take some getting used to but they're quite functional. Just don't expect an "apple watch" experience as they're quite dull and hard to read in the dark without the backlight turned on. The Solar feature doesn't actually "charge" the watch if it's dead. You'll still need to carry a charge cable with you if you're traveling. My wrist is around 6.5" and I have no issues wearing an Epix 47mm. Then again, that's a matter of personal preference.

The Epix looks bigger than the Fenix 6 because as you said there is a bezel width size in difference between the two. This difference causes an "illusion". The Fenix thick bazel makes it look smaller than it really is against the thin Epix's bezel.

Great video, fun and informative. Love the epix, surprised garmin was able to come out with such a flagship watch with huge changes while other companies are having problems. Fenix 7 to 6 to 5 are meh imo, and apple with their phones and watches have been meh. The epix price is a deal breaker for me right now, and the size is unfortunate but understandable for the battery. For the price, I'll stick with using my fenix 5s+ and apple watch. Plus I could get something like a coros pace for longer races and still be at the epix price.

Fenix 7 or Epix gen2? Apple watch. Great video! I hate to say it but when i saw the epix i wanted all that functionality and display, i was a loyal fenix 6 pro x user, but want to track my sleep (and not wear multiple devices). I'm sorry, i feel so guilty bailing on Garmin for Apple but I can't sleep with the Garmin, its too heavy and bulky. To be honest, thats why i gave up my nice analog watches, i realized i was taking them off in meetings because they were too heavy and i thought i would leave one on an airplane. Garmin is such a great badge for outdoor athletes, but if i don't wear it, its useless. Great review and q+a, i'm jealous

The apple watch is a great device and I think a lot of people feel the same way about the size and weight. The Garmin Venu 2 is a nice alternative that's smaller in footprint and still offers some great features more in-line with the apple watch... it's also half the price.

Been digging for few days now and finally decided to go with EPIX 2. While i like the features that fenix offers and look of it i think the screeen is sealing the deal for me to buy Epix instead. The battery and solar charge is nice. But i dont think its for someone like me. Im very active. I train alot in gym, mountain biking, long distance biking. Very active life style in short, but im not one of these guys that goes for 5 weeks camping or something like that and the extreme battery is not gonna save me. I think still Epix 2 battery keeping a week battery with heavy usage is still a deal for me. Its alot and i dont see why it would be problem to charge it once a week.Worst case scenario, buy a bank and its a done deal. But obviously ill get the much nicer screen imo and it will be popping out alot more in public when the red watch face is on in dark etc. It will be very eye catching considering its a clock you rarely see on anyone. Most people have apple, samsung watches that have screen shut down to save battery while this one can be superflashy. Not to mention its completely different built and shines like a rolex with lights. So after looking at epix, tactics and fenix. I think epix is the deal for me. I bought sapphire, black titanium version and will be recieving it in a few days. Cant wait. After ill get it ill share my thoughts. Regardless i think even if i went for fenix 7x im sure i wouldnt be disspointed. I think its just for people that are into extreme outdoor lifestyles like hunting, camping, travelling and this sorta type of people. For me who is just very active Epix will do the trick and will catch everyones eye in public. Feels like even with right watch face you can take it to a date night. The only thing im cocerned about is the size of the clock. Im very tall dude and pretty muscular. 203 cm. About 125 kg. Im happy my wrists are not very thick for my height. It sits around 17,8 mm. I hope the watch wont be tiny. ill get the nylon straps later on sale or something. Main reason for me to seal the deal was the screen. I never seen as vibrant and flashy screen on a clock as this one. I have samsung classic 4, but this seems like entirely different league. Almost feels like the watch face is floating. It looks like something out of a predator movie gadget. Ill share my thoughts when i get it. Thanks for helping me to decide.

Great video. One of my major gripes with the Fenix line is Bluetooth. I have owned 3x through now the 7x. Garmin refuses to list the Bluetooth version on their website. If i get more than 15 feet away from my phone I start to get the disconnected notification. I was really hoping Garmin would move to Bluetooth 5 at least which offers more like 100ft of range instead of 33 with Bluetooth 4 or older versions. If you have access to a Garmin rep, please ask them to put better Bluetooth in their watches. Thanks.

Thanks for this and the previous excellent videos on the F7 and Epix Gen 2! I have a question regarding sleep and recharge data/accuracy. I have a F6 and Polar Grit X and have found the Grit X and Polar’s ecosystem to be far superior to Garmin in these areas. (I don’t know if that’s been your experience, but the sleep metrics are a common criticism of Garmin.) With the new OHR sensor in the F7 and Epix 2 and perhaps software upgrades, have you observed any improvement in sleep/recharge/body battery/etc. areas? Thanks, and keep up the great content!
@ChaseTheSummit

I've noticed that my sleep/body battery metrics have been lining up a bit closer to the Whoop 4.0 which does a pretty good job in this department. How scratch resistant is the titanium bezel of the sapphire epix 2 compared to that of the sapphire Fenix 7? The Garmin website states that the Fenix 7 has a dlc coating and the epix 2 does not mention this. Thanks for all the great content about the new Garmin releases.
@ChaseTheSummit

The dark version of the Epix 2 Sapphire does have a DLC coating so it will be the same. The lighter color is raw titanium which will scratch easier but also won't scratches as easily since the scratches will blend in.

Questions from me: 1) Is it working with Basecamp on PC? 2) Can i still load custom maps (via basecamp or just .img file) 3) how is battery life on long workouts with 100% map time on screen.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, these still work on basecamp with img files just like Fenix 5x and 6. Battery life with 100% map will vary on the Epix depending on your brightness settings and if you use always on display. On the Fenix it should not have a major impact on battery life... I'd guess a 10% hit maybe? I haven't done any proper testing in that scenario but I have run a 100 mile race in the past with the Fenix 6 mainly on the map page and had no issues with battery longevity thanks for the MIP screen.

Hey really great video! I'm still somewhat concerned about the screen visibility in sunlight, particularly as I like to use my watch as a bike computer on the handle bar. Do you think the white background face option of Fenix 7 is better for this use case, especially since I can't use gestures to light up the epix display?
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
Strapped to handlebars you might find the Epix a little frustrating because the display dims itself automatically even when it's in "always on mode" and without being able to "wrist gesture" you won't be able to brighten it up unless you manually tap the screen or hit the light button. The Fenix on the other hand has a transflective display which doesn't need a backlight to be seen in the sun but has the same issues in darker environments where you'd need to tap the screen to get the backlight to kick on.

Unfortunately I can't answer this question. I haven't tried to load birds eye maps. Hi. Congrats for the video. I have three doubts regarding the Fenix 7: 1) Regarding visibility through the screen, how does it affect whether the screen is standard, solar or solar sapphire? Are there differences in terms of visibility, and if so, which one is the most easily readable? 2) Also regarding the screens, is the standard screen really easy to scratch compared to the sapphire? In your opinion, does the hardness of the screen justify the change to the sapphire model? and 3) Regarding solar charging, the fact that the battery is being recharged much more frequently without necessarily being low on charge, can this affect the useful life of the battery compared to one without solar charging? Thanks a lot.

@AlfuhPAD

Complete guess here, but I would say likely not an s any time soon as the battery life in a 42mm watch would be so short, but the 955 is more likely as that device was most recently (945 lte) measuring in at 44mm and has been larger in past models

Hey Dave, I have a fairly straight-forward question: How has the touch screen changed the watches usability as a daily driver? I understand the importance for working out to have buttons, but I love my AW touchscreen when at work (I work in a hospital), around the house, or just out and about. I feel this is huge as to why I’ve always returned my Garmins and gone back to my Apple Watch; I wasn’t willing to make that trade-off for day to day use when I wasn’t using it for a workout. My hope is that the touch screen improves the usability as an overall daily driver type watch, beyond just fitness. Thanks!

I'm not Dave, but I saw your comment and thought I would offer my opinion. Coming from a 5X, I have had the new 7X for 5 days now. I love the touchscreen. As somebody who has everything else Apple, I was always jealous (in the back of my mind) of simple features of the Apple Watch that seem like every smartwatch should have by now. I love the touchscreen. Especially for navigating maps. Cycling through the buttons on the older models was always very archaic to me, and often pushed me to just pulling out my phone whenever convenient, rather than looking at a topo map on the watch. With the touchscreen, I am able to zoom with the buttons, and scroll around with the touchscreen, and the refresh rate is pretty solid in my opinion. I would imagine that the Epix 2 would give you the biggest Apple Watch comparison with the new display, but I do love the 7X thus far. Maybe outside of map navigation, the touch screen may not enhance many features of this watch, but it sure makes it feel like a... smarter watch!

I think it makes the watch much more useful as a daily smartwatch as compared to the Fenix 6. There's something satisfying about swiping through the widgets or reading a long text on the screen and scrolling with your finger. It certainly feels more seamless and modern and the touch screen implementation itself is quite good with good responsiveness and rejection of things like accidental swipes and water droplets. I think they did a great job and I like that you can disable the screen entirely in harsher situations.

There has to be a way to remove the pins. They had to be inserted after the body of the watch was manufactured so there was a way to get them in there. My Fenix 7 is still on the way, but if these really aren't removable then I am going to be cutting them out and replacing with fat spring bars.
@ChaseTheSummit
@ChaseTheSummit 2 жыл бұрын
I suspect they're a single use spring-pin meant to be permanently installed. I'm wondering if people were damaging the watch trying to remove the pin so they made this change? Either that or the pin is inserted in a different fashion, maybe from under the bezel in a slot? Since the bezel now extends out to the lugs? Hard to tell... All I know is that I work in mechanical engineering and I couldn't find a way to remove it without damaging the watch.

@@ChaseTheSummit That's very interesting...and not encouraging. I would default to the typical capitalist explanation: making the bars non-removable reduces Garmin's competition for watch band sales, which are a high margin product for them. Separately, in some of the videos I've seen it looks like there is some sort of notch on the far edges of the pins. It's tough to tell from KZfaq videos. But if there is, that could be part of how to remove them. I may message their support to see if they'll confirm they can't be removed.

Great video! Quick question...so on the website it shows that they preload golf courses on the watches. I do not golf, and will likely never step foot on a golf course in my life. Is there a way to delete them all to gain more storage space than the 16GB in the 7s solar? Or would you not gain any storage space by deleting those? I truly don't see myself using 16GB of storage anyway, but I know I will 💯 not be using the golf course features, so if there is any way to get more storage space, I'll take it. Garmin has been using this display for a while all the way back to the original Garmin Venu. Super helpful video. Thanks for making it! I'm hoping you can help me with a conundrum I'm in. I'm looking for a "do everything" watch (smartwatch and outdoor watch). Because of this, I'm leaning toward the Epix Gen. 2. I also really like the idea of the AMOLED display for everyday and map use. However, I also go on all-day hikes or multi-day backpacking/mountaineering/ski touring trips. Because of this, I'm really worried about the battery life of the Epix. Do you reckon that setting a custom battery profile/using expedition mode (though I'm skeptical of this option due to how infrequently the watch pings the satellite) might make the Epix a viable option, or do you think it's a non-starter and to get a Fenix solar? Alternatively I could live a two-device life and get the 7X for all my outdoor pursuits, but I feel that if I'm going to drop that much coin on a watch, I'm going to want to use it all the time. Is this logic a bit silly? Thanks for any feedback and thoughts you have!

@@ChaseTheSummit that's the thing, I'm not really sure. I'm just worried that I won't know how long I need it to last until it's too late. The trips are usually between 3-7 days, moving and utilizing GPS for most of the day. When it's a slog across a glacier, I won't really need the GPS to receive every second, but on summit days, I'll be wanting it to track more closely. I'm wishing that there was some sort of online simulator to play with the settings and see how long the battery will last based on the desired inputs. I thought I heard somewhere that you can change how frequently the watch looks for a signal, or am I wrong on this? I'm wondering if you or someone you know do similar things and have a preference. Ultimately I will want the trip to be a single "workout." Is it possible to pause a workout and have the watch go back into normal mode for the afternoon/evening and then pick it up the next morning? Or is it possible to stitch multiple workouts together post-trip? This would allow me to conserve battery when I'm not moving. @@ChaseTheSummit I felt like its not worth it until I went to the Garmin Shop and I looked at the fenix 7X. Hobestly I love the series 7! Always wanted to have a proper fitness watch with touch screen capabilities. I guess I am upgrading.

The whole point for me to have a smartwatch is, to not have to bring my phone with me. I'm really surprised that a 2022 smartwatch in that price range don't have LTE built into it, but they managed to put in a light instead..? I can get most of the same features on my Whoop. I would love to switch away from my Apple Watch as the battery is a joke, but till I see a Fenix Solar Sapphire LTE, then I'm gonna have to wait patiently.

I'm sure we'll see full LTE support someday. For now, that's not really Garmin's priority it seems.

My Venu 2 have the annoying limitation that I can only use max 2 downloaded CIQ data fields in an activity 🥺 Also a limitation in Epix 2?

Yes, I believe that's still the case on Fenix 7 and Epix.

Has anyone had problems with the Epix 2 not tracking pool swim lap distance? I did my first swim with watch today, started with 500 yard warm up go to hit the lap button, and watch has the time but distance is 0 (--). discarded, then did another 500 but this time in the interval setting to confirming distance. Saved Started another swim work out and still would not track distance. Checked settings confirming right distance, swim detection, etc. nothing. Any one have any insights. I did not try turning off and back on yet.

Unfortunately I haven't had a chance to test it in the pool. Have you tried pinging Garmin's support?
