Garmin just pushed out a great update for a lot of phones in their line up. One of the most interesting features ... messaging!
For the first time iPhone users will be able to send messages from their Garmin watches.
I dive into the feature and review some of the pros, cons, and what hopefully comes next.

Damn, they do a great job supporting older models, but I guess that was the cutoff for this feature. Tbh it's not that great anyway 😆

I think the chances are small that they really gonna integrate with iMessage and apps like whatsapp

Unfortunately I'd be pretty confident to say the chance for integration with iMessage is 0%. I'd imagine there's a chance for integration with WhatsApp, Signal, etc, but Garmin engineers don't seem to focus on building those sorts of 3rd party integrations... Maybe one day! 💪🏃

I don't want my phone functions on my watch. It's part of the reason, I have never had an AW. I been using varying iterations of Garmin and I turn off the notifications. I don't want to call, text or see notifications on my watch. I use purely for fitness and wellness. It's also why I like Whoop, even though that has issues of its own that I won't get into in this comment. I currently have a FR955 and I am considering upgrading to the Epix Gen 2 Pro.

Apple Watch is a big competitor to the Garmin watches…meaning more restriction will be imposed by Apple

Apple can't restrict anything with this current implementation, it's the same as any other messaging app like FB Messenger, WhatsApp, etc But if you mean access to voice transcription etc they've already allowed access to Siri on Venu so there's hope! You're likely right though, Apple doesn't like sharing to make competition better 😕

So basically it doesn’t help iPhone users unless everyone they know downloads and uses the Garmin app for messages.

Unfortunately that's the case. Apple keeps iMesaage locked down so no 3rd party devices can access it

I’ve been going down the Garmin rabbit hole. I’m sold on it. I’ll be getting the epix gen 2 soon. I just finished a run with my Apple Watch and I was thinking that all of the selling points that are pushed with the AW, I don’t really use them. Like cellular and messaging from the AW. So it should be an easy break up.

Yeah it works great when you are happy to only have Apple products, but once you start mixing in others the experience falls apart

@@DaveDoesFitness I just went around looking for an actual display so I could actually see how it looks. I was going to go with the 51, but I think the 47 is a better fit.

Yeah I've got thin flimsy wrists so 47 works on me, but 51 would be laughably large. I've got some friends that are bigger guys and 51 works great and they love the extra battery (that friend has a Fenix 6x)
