The biggest issue for me and reason I bought the overlander, HEAT! Many times I’ve been out and my phone has over heated and not able to use. I’ve even had iPads over heat and become unusable. The overlander paired with the garmin inreach is a great dedicated GPS system. Also really love the ability to search for camp sites around me.

Is it worth it as another tool? Sometimes stand alone devices are better. Phones and tablets have limitations as they rely on the mobile network for the gps to work accurately. I have been caught out when the map closed then wouldn't re load because of no data connection even though the map was loaded prior to the trip

Thanks for the very clear explanation. For off-road use I am very undecided between this model and the Garmin Tread. I rejected the new Tread Overland because it was too expensive and big. What do you suggest me? On my Jimny cockpit I already have all the Ram Mount ball mounts for the Trip Computer and other accessories. Thanks a lot

Hy Wayne - very good and informative - Question: can I download the Hema maps I have purchased and which are on my phone onto the Overlander? It seems not although in the beginning of the video you very quickly refer to Hema maps and at that point I thought they are pre-installed which however is contrasting with your comments at the end re the iPad etc. thanks for a hint - Marc

I pad doesn't have that tough design. Cannot handle high heat and abuse. Never spoke about dropping or hitting accidentally and Alot more. Bottom line is that device cannot be replaced by any other options in my opinion. Great video and wish you continue to do more challenging stuff.

What BS. I siliconed my ipad mini in a tough case (remove screen cover to stop reflection) and it goes everywhere. Ute, tractor, boat, motorbike, 4x4 & hiking. I use memory maps and navionics which are superior.

@@MrFastFarmer So you had to modify it to suit your application. Which is fine as it looks like you're a delicate man knows how to take care of things. Which not everyone can do so. Here is a device that is designed to take aggressive use. Going up and down bumping the desert, passing rocky terrains, can work on 50C plus without shutting down. Humidity sometimes an issue where it could stop your device for days until the screen clear out.. and more. I am not saying it is perfect but it is what it is and that's what is available now.

What a pain! I thought the HN-7 was the worst EXPENSIVE Navigator I have, but this matches it! I like the graphics of the HEMA? topo maps, but the annoying omission from the Hema? (It reminds me more of the OTM (Open Topo Maps), is all the commonly used forest tracks are not labeled! The main forest roads have road names, but not the forest 'bush' tracks. The Garmin Street Maps have almost all of the bush tracks named, so, if I want to go into the 'bush' I have to use the Garmin Street Maps to navigate to where I want to go. Having no preloaded maps loaded into the unit was also annoying and time consuming having to load them. Transferring my waypoints from any of my other Garmin devices, was a nightmare! There is a limit of only 500 waypoints at a time! I have almost a thousand waypoints, so I had to split the waypoints into two to get them to fit in. A downright unnecessary pain! Addition to that, the Overlander strips all the Garmin individual waypoints symbols from my other units to one only symbol , a flag! The menu's are all over the place, and the voice command won't recognise my voice. (yes it is enabled)! The white border surrounding the topo maps can't be disabled or switch to dark mode, so, the brightness is quite distracting! The one advantage the HN-7 has over this device, is I can download all my OziExplorer maps into it. Not the Garmin! Perhaps the designers were not from Garmin?! For the price, NOT recommended at this stage!
@CanopyCampingAustralia

Fair enough. The voice activated part is unavailable for Australian market I think.

@@CanopyCampingAustralia Many thanks for the advice re: voice command. Unusual if that's the case as all my other Garmin products that have the voice command facility, work fine in Australia. It would be surprising, but after the issues I've experienced so far with the Overlander, anything won't shock me! Kind Regards...

hi does this allow you to drive out bush from a remote camp spot and it track you there while your travelling off road?, so i can follow back the same paths i took to get back to camp, couple of months back i went seriously off road bush no tracks and as it got late i started heading back the way i travelled but had to stop and camp the night as i could not see my tyre tracks, scared the crap out of me, normally im fairly good in the bush must be old age catching up with me.
