I think it is important to also consider Francis was an elite racer in the UK, a few years back now but this is someone with a history of riding bikes fast. And just reminding the body to ride a bit is going to be worth most of these gains.
@ACanette
@ACanette 4 ай бұрын
Yeah this is Just a former elite u23 rider being off training for a while and catching back to somewhat base. Weird ad for garmin as well, this would be only interesting for very untrained people. IF you want actual training you'd most likely not want to have this box of chocolates approach where you never know how long your training would take and how to work that around your day

I agree with this . Considering his first ftp test result was already 3.5w/k and he was an previous elite rider , shows that he was basically gaining his fittness back. That garmin program can't apply to normal riders.
@michaelquinlan4817
@michaelquinlan4817 4 ай бұрын
I would tend to agree with most of these sentiments. He is a somewhat talented individual to begin with. That in itself will mean his gains are a little better than your average person and much better than an untrained individual. ie. He responds better to stimulus than a lot of people. That all being said, if you just wanted to get generally fit these watches will do a good job of improving you without any real chance of injury or overwork. That's good right?
@82vitt
@82vitt 4 ай бұрын
This is something Jesse pointed to in his video about his training program for the nationals, that his ftp gains were fast because he was coming back to former fitness and numbers which he had already had in the past, and that he was talented meaning his body responds to training stimuli more rapidly than an average Joe's. Who if they copied that exact same training program, but weren't coming from a similar past background, would not see similarly fast gains. On the other hand, Ronald Kuba claimed his FTP doubled in his fist year of cycling training, but then again his background could have been another sports discipline at an elite level, which already indicates better than average predispositions to gaining/re-gaining fitness fast.

As a Norwegian who known and done the Norwegian method since 1988 I say the watch does a very good job at structuring the training. Most people do way too much half hard sessions and not enough low or easy base / zone 2 training. This leads to burnout and/or injury (especially amongst runners).

I expect his ftp when he was racing E/C1 was much higher than 270. So the 1st test was well off his potential hence the fast improvement off little training load. His training history will help. I have some mates that have such a good volume of historic training & racing in their legs it doesn't seem to take long or much to get back to 85-95% of their previous levels (it's the next 5 or 10% that is the tough bit to find).

Never thought I’d love a video of someone talking about a video. But I love these series. As someone with a Garmin Epix, the calendar will change depending on the day you had prior. This “calendar” is a daily suggestion and is not based on the user putting in a “plan/goal” - that’s a seperate feature. Also, the suggestion is given in the morning. So if you have a long day & then decide to do the workout, it could change what is served up the next day.

I have a Garmin fenix 6 pro and usually look at the suggested workout of the day. It's never learnt from the sessions I do, so if I routinely do vo2max sessions of 8x4min@110-125pc FTP, if it ever tells me to do intensities, it's always way less. Threshold sessions are more sweet spot than anything, and so on. Only exception being sprint sessions. Ultimately I use the info to know if the watch believes I should be doing a hard effort on a given day or not, sometimes it motivates me, sometimes it gives me an excuse to be lazy.

I'm messing around with this for running right now. I put in secondary and primary running events and it sets phases for training based on hitting the primary event. Base, build, and taper/race readiness. It adapts daily overnight to the load from the day and physiological metrics it tracks. It seems to get a bit jacked up right now since I'm doing cycling in addition to running so in what was supposed to be a more tempo/build phase I'm getting more recovery workouts in a row than I would normally go for. But in Garmin a trust so we'll see how it goes. Im really just getting back into it so a lot of the gains are going to be just from frequently doing the exercise. We'll see how this shakes out in 6 weeks. But I'm now banking highevel performance on this. Just to take the thinking out of what workout to do for now. Once I hity base fitness target I'll give it more scrutiny.

Email to Garmin > Can you please detail what "daily suggested" workouts optimizes for in cycling? Answer: The Daily Suggested workouts are for customers that do not have a particular goal in mind but would like to improve overall fitness. It will not Improve FTP as this is a one off measurement metric, but it will slowly improve the weaker areas and build you up to a good level. Daily Suggest Workouts will take the following into account when suggesting workouts; Training Status Training Load & Load Focus VO2 Max Value Recovery Time Sleep Data Profile of Recently Performed Workouts Scheduled Races (This will only effect this feature on devices with the Race Event feature. From my experience with Garmin watches and using it basically for more than a year: They are very conservative. Most workouts are easy (like 55-60% for zone 2 rides, rarely up to 65%) and are probably meant for "normal people" - not fit cyclists. Basically always trying to play safe like no upper zone 2 (towards 75% FTP). Especially on the trainer, I rarely achieved their aerobic/anaerobic target by sticking to their duration and wattage. Also the "hard workouts" weren't really hard or long - this is also matched by Garmin's recovery estimation. Garmin may want me to do a threshold session like 3*8 minutes @86% - again very low - but I can easily do 3*8@100% FTP. But it's always lowballing in the zones (both wattage and duration). Also I rarely had any VO2 workouts from Garmin up to 120% FTP. But Garmin sometimes throws in a Sprint workout - most were easy (like the one Cade had in week 1) but some were also impossible like 30*10s @300% FTP.

My Garmin constantly wants me to rest. As soon as I'm sitting on my bike it says rest 70+ hours and every morning it says "you did sleep bad so you need more rest time". However I ignore it and the rest time does not increase. So it does not matter if I was riding 20 hours or only 4. I need 4 days rest. About the boring part, i did enduco and it wanted me to 5 hour rides constantly which were super boring and annoying on the turbo trainer.

@crack0n Garmin Suggestions, let's you set a goal with the race calendar. Daily suggestions are made relative to recovery (first) and ability (second). It appears to me that Garmin uses an injury avoidance calculation rather than exclusively performance based suggestion. It is also why most athletes frequently complain about it "being too easy," which is no different than what I hear from athletes complaining about their coach's suggestions.

Easy explanation mate... prior higher capacity with poor testing consistency/familiarity. ie he under performed/unfamiliar testing initially, made minor adaptations during the month of "basically maintenance mode" if that, then gave a legitimate solid effort for the ending test. I believe 20min max tests should be done frequently (2-3x/mo), not necessarily to ultimately produce the highest figures, but to establish a solid mental perceived effort connection so you really know when your twisting the throttle vs when your just staring at your computer hoping it works out.... How many of us have done 20min tests and when we get to 19 or 19:30 your able to kick it up from say 300 to 350 or 375 for that last 1min? if you can do that you probably could have done 5 or maybe 10 watts more the entire duration and underperformed for your test.

What was not clear to me, was if this 31 day was a Garmin plan of 31 days, or just a time period Cade choose. And if there was a goal to the plan, or if it was just a general fitness plan. If it is a general plan, without a time limit, I can see that there is a very slow buildup, where the watch gets the baseline set in.

Garmin does have training plans geared towards an event (e.g. a Fondo on X date), but that isn't what Francis was doing. Having done both, I find the daily suggestions are fine, though barely enough to maintain, and the training plans are also fine, but if I am using an automated one rather than a real coach, Zwift's have been more effective more me. Is it possible that the Garmin is prescribing rides based on overall stress that it detects, from either rides themselves or your everyday life? He mentions moving (physical labor) and those who follow Wild Ones know his Dad had health issues during the filming of this… that’s psychological stress, cortisol spike etc. It’s not just the rides that it’s taking into account… but your everyday life stress, sleep, etc. Is that right?

Wasn't this guy a pro for a while? How does he start with an FTP of 235. Either nerfed the first FTP test or was really out of shape. If he was out of shape it doesn't take much to remind the muscles how to work again. How many of us regular guys have come back after a winter of sitting on the couch to 80 - 90% of summer in a few short weeks. Also, that ending FTP isn't much higher than mine as a slightly better than average 40yo so another point that he nerfed the first test and just got woken up over the course of a month.

35W in 6 weeks seems imposible. Even regaining fitness after some time of not training won't be that fast. Maybe he was well trained back in a days and layed down 2 months before doing the challange. I usually see ~15W increase in 4 weeks after detraining period and after hitting a ceiling it's more like 5-7W/4 weeks increase. However I do low volume of training overall, around 6-8h/week.😁

Garmin will ask you how you felt after a threshold test. If the user is honest Garmin will adjust accordingly. Yes, the more data you throw at watch the better. I use my Garmin Edge and Garmin Fenix 7 along with my Favero power meter to provide all the data Garmin needs to know if I'm improving, increase intensity, and recovery. Garmin knows how well I sleep, how much workouts I do and at what intensity along with blood oxygen, heart rate, respiration etc. over a few months of collecting and adjusting it will get closer and closer to understanding and giving you the right data and workout. People need to realize that it's not a wear it once and it automatically knows everything about you. The system needs to learn about you first and the more data it collects over time the better.

After consistently training and learning for the last 5 years, l have found, personally, ramp tests aren't all they are cracked up to be. If you test one day over another, the results have a relative big variance. This dependent on what you have been doing leading up to the test in training. How you have been eating leading up to and on the day of testing. Sleep over the previous days. Atmospheric conditions, and l feel most importantly, how motivated you are on the particular ramp test day determines what number you hit. And I feel the motivation part is huge. If I just carry out a ramp test just to see where I'm at, it will be way lower, maybe 15W than if I'm testing after a training block leading up to an important race. Then, if you have someone there watching you, always go harder as well. I would go as far to say that if what I have referred to on one day was worst case then say 2 days later best case, I would see 25-30w difference. Si, NZ.

I'd definitely get faster if I listened to my Garmin, but I'd also quickly burn myself out...

Turns out if you've been a great cyclist most of your life, take a bunch of time off, and then start riding your bike again, you'll get faster. I'd wager he gets as big or bigger gain in that time just literally picking his own sessions.

Because the real life coach would have made him gain +10w FTP and the AI 50w? If let's say we trust everything said and shown :)

That isn't a fair representation, he was in the past fitter, it is easier to get fitness back, than to create from scratch
