Thanks for all your previous answers to my questions. Once again, this tutorial is brilliant. I was challenged with using a Garmin Striker Plus 4cv in an AquaGlide Chinook 90 inflatable kayak but figured out a solution that worked very well: I installed Scotch Brand Extreme Fasteners to both the bottom of the transducer and the bottom of the starboard side "pontoon". (Really not a pontoon but a fabric-covered vinyl air bladder) I can reach over the side of the kayak and stick the transducer into place very easily. The transducer cable then threads through a couple of loops (kayak paddle loops made of velcro) to the Garmin and I can either disconnect the cable and leave it all in the kayak, or unsnap the transducer from the hull and pack it all out when finished fishing. I can also beach the kayak and by leaning a little to port, the transducer never touches bottom because of the kayak's construction. Best of all, it works! So thanks again for all your helpful tutorials, advice, and ideas for kayak fishing. You are clearly an expert in this area!

Try to keep the duct seal as thin as possible especially if it is a deep cut V hull. however the most important thing is to ensure no air gaps between the hull, duct seal, and transducer.

This is a mad good idea and very interesting. I have seen others using cut out foam, even water or resin filled foam, glued to the Kayak hull. Air bubbles are a hazard with the resin method and also pretty permanent for your transducer. Duct seal seem like a very flexible option, assuming sonar penetrates it very well? Also its easy to reverse if not effective. I wonder how GPS works out if you mount inside the Kayak? I definitely want good GPS functionality. I am planning on putting a FF on my OT Predator this summer, I was going to conventionally mount by stuffing a pluming pipe down the scupper hole wrapped with duct tape, acting as a shim, with the transducer on the end snug in the recess. But now that I have seen this, I am very tempted to try it out. If I get a FF model with a strong down scan, I should hopefully get very close to a direct water mounted result. Excellent video, thank you for posting.
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 2 жыл бұрын
So most fish finders the GPS is in the head unit itself not the transducer, unless you have a external GPS puck for a higher end unit.
@ColinProft
@ColinProft Жыл бұрын
This was a great video. Thanks! After several hours of trial and error, this method has still not fully worked for me. I've carefully followed your directions with the installation process, but I haven't had much luck. Before I describe my results, here is my equipment list: Garmin Striker Vivid 4cv with a GT20 transducer, and my kayak is a Vibe Yellowfin 100. In order to guarantee the transducer being mounted below the water line, I've put the duct seal immediately below my seat inside the hull. That way my full body weight is pressing down on that section. I thought, "Maybe my issue was mounting it at the front of the kayak, which might not be under the water line." Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick. My mounting technique: 1) Duct seal is 1" thick before adding transducer, flat against the hull, center of the kayak (under me) 2) Transducer is fully surrounded by duct seal 3) Kayak hull is virtually flat in the center Results: 1) The transducer doesn't function properly up until about 8+ feet of water. Then it begins to properly find the bottom. 2) The 77 kHz frequency on the "Traditional" view works, but I've noticed the 200 kHz frequency doesn't 3) Similar to above, the "Clear Vu" mode is non-functional. This seems to be an issue with frequency, as the 200 kHz didn't work in Traditional Mode either 4) I have noticed that, as I approach the limits of the sonar when I get above 8 feet of water, it begins to think the bottom of the lake is fish. Fish symbols appear like crazy on the bottom Help! What am I missing? Does the shape of the underside of the kayak matter at all? Does this method simply not work right with the GT20?
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you got the technique down pretty well IMO, have you tried just tossing the transducer over the side and see if the results are the same? Could be a transducer issue possibly. I have used my GT20 with no issues and this method
@ColinProft
@ColinProft Жыл бұрын
@@1Cast1Fish Potentially. I've tried putting the GT20 in the water to see if it was working properly and still got some weird results. I'll keep you posted. I didn't have issues with it a week ago, but I've been modifying my kayak recently. I used to put the depth finder over the side of the kayak. Your videos have been EXCELLENT. Truly. I just used a yoga block cut it to 1"1/2 thick and 3/4 or 1/2 width&length past the size of transducer. Tracing the transducer in center of a piece yoga eva foam block that you cut. Also make sure to cut the tranducer yoga block to fit in center. Find correct spot to glue your cut yoga block in the kayak hall glue in location you pick let yoga block dry. Then install the transducer after you filled yoga block cavity halfway with the glue you select then press transducer till it bottems out to hall making sure to avoid air gaps and bubbles let cure. Intall everything else. Buying the foam block pre made for kayaks cost 20.00 yoga block 5.00 and you have extra. Its the same eva material.

The best answer I have is, that you will need to try it. I have seen it work without issue, and I have seen a few issues. Really depends on construction of the hull, and transducer installation. The key is to ensure no air gaps and ensure the transducer is below the waterline. Some aluminum boats have 2 pieces of aluminum and that creates a small air gap that causes issues.

Hello , I just installed my Transducer to the Hull of my Kayak using Duc Seal, after watching your very informative video. My question is am still getting the message “ THE TRANSDUCER IS DISCONNECTED. So does the Kayak need to be in the water to get Readings? Am very new at all this , so all your videos are very helpful. Thank You .
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 10 ай бұрын
The transducer disconnected is from the transducer cable not being seated into the main unit. Could be many things, not pressed in far enough, forced in the wrong way, broken pins, or cable issues.

So the foam pad that is made for kayaks from Garmin...the instructions say you need to fil the foam pad cavity with water for it to work....I think that without the water you will have a gap and possibly issues. (Just my opinion though) I have never tried the foam

If your duct seal is too thick could that render an issue. Not showing everything that it should also not showing death unless I was in less than three feet of water. But when I pulled the transducer out and held it under the water by hand it worked perfectly fine

@1Cast1Fish

I tried this with a Garmin 540s in a sailboat. The fishfinder screen seems to work but the depth meter does not work at all. Not sure if this is due to the thicker hull of the boat or something different in the transducer of the 540s. The depth information is more important than the fish finder for me, so I went back to a wet well, which does work.
@1Cast1Fish
@1Cast1Fish 2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like there is a air gap of sorts between the transducer and hull...that is why no depth...the air kills the ping and then it thinks it has no depth. Once you add water the air gap is removed and no issues.
@HomerShannon

@@1Cast1Fish I have to revise my comment. Since I've been having issues with my depth sounder as well as the Garmin, today I replaced the transponder on the depth sounder, replacing the in-hull model with a Humminbird puck. I mounted it a bit off center of the boat where the fibergass is a thinner and used the duct sealer. Worked like a charm. I then took my Garmin and moved it from the location I had been using, which works fine with a water bath, and stuck it on a thinner area using the duct sealant. It works! I still get an occasional drop-out on the Garmin, but it only last a couple of seconds. I'll know more about how this really works after I've used the boat more signifcantly than my little test ride today.

Hey man so i did this for the gt20 transducer. The regular sonar works but the CV is definitely wonky. Id say the bottom/tip of the trans is right on the edge of the duct seal.
