Awesome videos on this comparision! I have the Overlander plus GPSMAP 66I (wanted Explorer+ but Garmin has discontinued it quietly ~ not been on sale for MONTHS now in australia ~ in order to make Tread Overland make sense) is what I have. $1,500 combined instead of $2,200 like this Tread Overland. Backup camera is important if you tow a caravan, off road trailer or touring trailer, find it hugely useful. Also a seperate (and backup) map device in the GPSMAP 66i means worst case takes place (Overland breaks somehow) while I'm in the dessert I can still navigate. Also ANYTIME I leave the car the GPSMAP 66i is with me so I always have inReach instead of the possibility of dying in the dessert. I think a video chatting about if it's actually sane or silly for Garmin to more than double the price, remove some features (voice and Rear view ~ big deals) but add other features (tread standard group radio chat... which does that matter when most 4WD guys have CBs and need them?)... a total "Is this thing worth it 'really'?" video. I'll be honest that the Tread Overland makes NO sense to me. In every way bar some software tweaks, a wider screen and an insane price.... it's a downgrade in overall features, backup~ability (devices break), flexibility (walk away from car and still have SOS and SMS) than an Overland and GPSMAP 66i. Also what cheek to update the software for the Tread Overland and not release a proper (meaningful) update for the Overlander. These are all Android apps running on an android tablet. Garmin... don't start making your customers hate you, don't be evil.

Hi Jerome many thanks for watching and subscribing! Appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Backup camera is now supported since a recent update, but yes I have to agree Garmin should have incorporated this into firmware pre-release of the tread and (per a comment I left on an earlier video where someone asked me about reverse cam) I had looked over the specs and capabilities and saw zero reason why the Tread could not support reverse cameras. What DID happen was the support was support was added only after the release of the BC50 camera (make of that what you will. Also per your asking about backup, you can have all your maps in the app and device at the same time (the subject of an upcoming video). Agree on the removal of voice TOTALLY, terrible thing to loose, really. it's a dealbreaker for me personally.... but, not every device is for every person. Thanks for the idea on the price justification video, I'll think on it. I have covered a lot of the points at various stages though in saying this device may not be for everyone, it is a little bit niche, but that is the great thing about what Garmin are doing with the range now and that is adding a host of devices for different crowds into the mix which is great!

>Also what cheek to update the software for the Tread Overland and not release a proper (meaningful) update for the Overlander. THIS. I spent 700 Euros on the Overlander and they didn't add one new feature since. It's like they given up on that thing. The Explore web service still looks like a proof of concept beta version. The device had so much potential but they just let it die. Also why the F isn't it compatible with their newer wireless cameras? I can add an older backwards cam but the newer license plate holder cam that works completely wireless (and on batteries) can't be added. But their newer Garmin Camper has support for both cameras. Never going to spend any money on Garmin ever again. I'd rather use som sh-tty iPad app instead.

@@recreationalplutonium to play devils advocate here (by the way I do agree with a lot of what you are saying) I think what they are trying to do is provide a lot more diversity in terms of devices and services to the marketplace (which is always a good thing) and give different people different devices which could suit them in their activities. It seems (from the contact I do have with them) that they are always playing catch up in all areas, seems to be a bit of a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation with them at the moment. People want different devices but that leads to more work keeping each device up to date and keeping people happy. I do agree on your thoughts for sure on the explore, it's a fantastic unit and it seems they have just given up on it. .. but feedback does reach them, so I guess we shall see

@@4WheelsOnTheRoad Yeah, I get it. But their premium devices are just Android tablets. So why does one WiFi cam work with the Camper while it won't work with the Overlander. And vice versa ... a cam works only with Overlander but won't work with Camper. If it had some new special radio hardware built in - yeah, sure. I'd understand it. But it's just a software update. Feels like they want me to throw away the Overlander and buy a new device. I like the idea of the Overlander. TBH I'd buy an Overlander 2 right now if they would guarantee meaningful software updates for 3 years or so. The platform they built is fantastic. Sadly they didn't use it for anything great. It still feels like a tech demo. But I guess it's a chicken-egg problem. Not many people will shell out 700 Euros/Dollars for an Overlander running what looks like stone age software and thus there's not much incentive for Garmin to throw developer time at an "unpopular" device. Maybe they could add some subscription service to make it worthwhile for them?

thanks for the vid i have been thinking of getting the tread, we hunt a lot and need to add waypoints quick and easily name them and nav back to them from an open paddock (no roads/tracks) - will it do "as the crow flies" or try and nav to a road ?? we have only ever used marine garmin gpsmap units as they do this task very well. they should make it with out inreach as im not going to carry it in my back pocket..

Gidday Aaron, thanks for watching mate! you can choose as the crow flies or snap to roads, yeah it is not really that handy to carry in the pocket but this range was made more for s*s and in vehicles with an option to carry it around for navigation. the emphasis with these is to use the Inreach for remote travel I reckon. but the great thing with this range that Garmin are actually doing is providing a lot more options for the entire range which is great!. thanks again for watching and if you can throw some thumbs up's and comments on some other videos and share the channel around if you can! youtube.com/@4WheelsOnTheRoad

Would love to see some in depth navigation on the Overlander working with explore, uploading gpx's from Basecamp etc, making tracks visible and hiding them, navigating from "where to" using gpx tracks etc. 👍 Also, when you record a track, there is no way to export it out, it says "this feature is not yet supported" that sucks 😞 Wonder if there is a workaround???

Hi there, thanks for watching, I will try to get onto creating a video on that when I can, thanks for the idea! You can export with a memory card. Exporting GPX Files with a Memory Card You can export data, such as waypoints, routes, and tracks to a compatible microSD® card. Insert a compatible microSD card into the memory card slot on your device (Installing a Memory Card for Maps and Data). On your Overlander™ device, select Explore > Library > Export from Explore > Memory Card. Select one or more waypoints, routes, or tracks. Select EXPORT.

Hi mate thanks for watching, yes I will agree that these devices are not for everyone, price can be an issue at times but as I have mentioned the great thing about the way Garmin is doing business now is by creating new devices for different people and for different uses which is great! Hi mate, no, unfortunately you just set it up with ‘car’, ‘motorhome’, ‘motorhome with trailer’ or ‘car with trailer’, you can set, height, width, length and weight of vehicle and that is all that calculation takes into account

Garmin taking the piss with the Tread price at nearly $2k. So they’ve included the inReach which was always a complaint by users needing the seperate device but then removed other features. InReach mini 2 is less than $500 retail and that’s in a standalone package, integrating the tech would be a minor cost to production

@@4WheelsOnTheRoad well the two you mentioned, reverse camera and voice activation. The software is essentially the same, they’ve added inreach and larger screen, and the ability to track your mates, provided they have the same system. @@4WheelsOnTheRoad For the price that Garmin charges for these units, the consumer should not be forced to hunt for maps that work. The mount should be as solid as the door to a vault.
