Garp doesn’t try to change the world despite the effect he has. He just tries to have a positive impact on his own scale.

Grey is Garp's theme color, i think it is pretty fitting. After all, very often grey is used to depict situations in which there is no right choice, which is what you described in his experience of Marineford. So yeah, some sort of "Lesser evil" justice, upholding the world order for the sake of preventing the immense pain of a world conflict. You could make a case for him being a hero or a villain irrespective of his final choice, as siding with the world government could be seen as preventing the world from reaching freedom but also trying to stop bloodshed and siding with the Straw Hats/RA could be seen as helping the world achieve more freedom but also causing or worsening the upcoming war. Grey justice, because he's the true opposite of Akainu. There is no absolute justice, and no objectively right choice. The only thing he can do is try to take the option that would cause less pain.

I think Garp is waiting for something or someone, hence why he's still in the Marines. I tried seeing it but it doesn't make sense to make Garp an evil character. He's waiting for something that is more important than his own family I feel

Garp being a big shot villain is a turn none of us one piece fans are prepared or looking forward to. But who knows oda is always surprising us.

Garp is my favorite character in one piece. Such a legendary character. He truly embodies authentic beliefs of justice. He’s arguably the strongest in the marines yet he chooses not to be an admiral in order not to be directly under the control of the celestial dragons. He got offered the title of multiple times. This man was the arc nemesis of roger yet roger trusted him with his only heir. He took down eight mountains with his bare fists when he was practicing for don chin jo. I theories that there is something larger than Garp himself going on in the navy. A separate group of the navy that disagrees with the ideals of the world government. Amongst this group there is: Garp, Drake, Coby, Smoker, Fujitora, Aokiji, and possibly more. The way coby speaks with drake and cobys training, many other things prove that there is a separate group of the navy that heavily apposes the world government. What do you think?

I always figured that Garp grew up during the rise of ROCKS and used his power to protect the people. His desire to help is balanced against his D inherited hatred of the world nobles. This leads to his being the least extreme of his family, but it allows him to work within the flawed system to try and minimize the damage done to the average person. As for him being a big bad? I think his performance at Marineford clearly shows where his absolute loyalty lies.

What I believe is that after not be able to chose a side in marineford war, Garp regretted it. He lost one of his grandson, whom he could have protected. He even let Daddan show her anger on him, because he knew what he did was wrong morally. But I think the situation will change. A somewhat similar situation might happen with Sabo in marijoise. But this time, he would not stay silent and chose one of the factions. Cannot say which though. This also brings a new question to my mind. Does Luffy blames Garp for the death of Ace. Garp could have protected Ace easily if he wanted to. Luffy is not someone who plays the blame game, but Ace is a different story. Also we haven't seen both of Luffy and Garp interacting after the marineford war. Maybe Oda is waiting for something of a drama there.

I always viewed Garp being a Marine being a lot like Luffy's dream - which sounds weird, but Luffy and Dragon both have goals that are about freedom. And the fact that Garp refused to rise to a higher rank because of how he feels about the Celestial Dragons. But I think Garp joined the Marines because he thought it would allow him to be free or help keep people free - and it just did not work out the way he thought. I think his sense of justice is tied to the idea of being free. I probably am completely wrong. Still a thought worth having.

Garp definitely knows the higher ups a messed up hence why he refused promotions. I think he's waiting for that generational change hence why he nurtures people like Coby and Kuzan. Since most pirates are more like Blackbeard than Luffy, he's definitely using his position protect the common folk.

I don’t see Garp as a villain, but I also don’t have him tied to any allegiance in particular. He’s definitely not gonna join the pirates, he had chances with Roger, Ace and Luffy and made his choice. I don’t think he’ll be a revolutionary because although the revolutionaries are trying to make positive changes, they are still seen as villains and monsters. We know he doesn’t agree with the marines or their way of doing things, but believes in their mission. If Garp is going to do anything big, I would assume it’s him taking over the World Government and making it into what it should have been. I also don’t agree with the anti-D. Garp is the epitome of D. He’s arguably the most free person in the whole series, he’s been part of some of the biggest events in history (Rox pirates, Roger battles, etc.) and everyone befriends him easily. He’s not the typical D we have been exposed to, but if we take those traits of those people and compare them to Garp then it’s clear as much of a D if not more than most of them Garp is true, and oddly enough “just”, Justice. He doesn’t do what is always expected of him, but he always does what is best for the situation and others. He understands the military is important, but also understands it is flawed and that is due to the higher ups and their flawed justice.

Garp’s biggest error wasn't adopting Ace or having Dragon, but it wasn't subscribing to the Grandline Review which would have pumped One-piece culture into his and the World Governments KZfaq feeds!

It's been implied when Garp's generation was Luffy's age pirates were less numerous but far stronger and more brutal. I think Garp's sense of justice was shaped by that peroid of time. After all freedom to live in peace is a form of freedom. Speculation, 60 years ago maybe the East Blue was the most dangerous of the Blues. I think Garp's continued relationship the Marines is a mutual riding the tiger situation. Not to mention his nakama are individual Marines. I'd guess part of his decision to stay after he realized how messed up things were was to stack the decks with as many marines like Kobe as he could.

My theory has always been that Garp's wife/lover and the mother of Dragon(or Luffy's mother) is actually a celestial dragon, a good, kind hearted one like the Donquixotes (not Doffy). Hence he is still loyal to the marines (probably some more reasons as well).

I feel like garp is going to be one of those characters that we will grow with together and love, but later on find out that he wasn’t as great as we thought.

Someone asked a good question the other day which was, If Ace had put his pride to the side and asked Garp for his help during marineford,would Garp have helped him? I think that’s an interesting question because he was more than willing to kill Aikainu for killing Ace.Also it’s not like the defeat of the Whitebeard Pirates stopped anything it only opened up more conflict for the world.Also Garp isn’t a fan of the Nobles so I personally think he is willing to throw away his position if it fills his form of Justice.

I believe Garp will change sides when the time is right. First and foremost, he wants stability for the World and right now the World Government is the only entity that allows for this. When the World Govt. eventually collapses or is on the brink of collapse, he will most certainly join his family in creating a new, better system. However, I could see him being the last obstacle to overcome for Luffy and Dragon to be able to overthrow the World Govt. He might be sort of a final test of strength and determination, similar to how Shanks could be the final test before reaching Laugh Tale.

As much as I would love garp to be the final villain, it just wouldn’t sit right with me after all his character development towards being a caring and loveable person for so long. Especially after marineford it wouldn’t make sense

Garp is easily the worst parental figure in One Piece. Letting his boys be raised by bandits and wondering why there aren't marines.

I think it’s quite clear that, while in the Marines, Garp opposes the world government in the long term. For one thing, he’s most likely the leader of Sword, given that Coby is a member. There’s implications that Sword opposes the world nobles, given their opposition to CP0 being in wano. Moreover, we know Garp doesn’t like the celestial dragons, as he refused promotions to avoid being under their control. I think Garp is opposing the world government from the inside, through sword, and I think he knows the true history. The reason he didn’t help Ace and Whitebeard at Marineford to achieve this is the same reason Roger didn’t declare war on the government; it was too early. There was not yet a joyboy, the ancient weapons weren’t there, and the One Piece hadn’t been found.

Garp caused his own family issues by his refusal to actually do anything when it comes to his job. He could've become fleet admiral and stopped a lot of things. He knows so much, has/had power and connections but does nothing.

The justice Garp has is Love Justice! Everything he does he does out of love, like his lovefists, adopting Ace, loving his rival, he loves both his grandson and probably his son. Even though they are on total opposites, when he speaks about them it looks to me like he does it with a certain sweetness. Also if you look at how he acts with Coby and Helmeppo he looks like a father teaching his sons and when it comes to other people it's like he embraces them completely. His character arc is going to be impressive because he's going to see only love in the actions of Luffy

I believe that's the biggest reason why Garp wanted Luffy and Ace to be marines, because when you are on their side they won't go after you.

It is quit easy Garp wants a stable organized world with rules and Luffy wants absolut freedom. Garp like Luffy oposes tyrany, but he has chosen to look away, because he thinks those world nobles are a nessesary evil to keep a stable world.

It’s also important to note that Koby, Garp’s student, has also kinda adopted the “impulsive justice” thing, which is more evidence that Garp has it too. However, there is one bid difference between them (other than age & power), and that realism vs idealism. Garp represents realism. He bases his actions on what has already happened and what he has currently, Koby on the other hand bases his actions on what is needed to reach a certain goal or ideal scenario. This is seen in his efforts to become admiral and to overthrow the world government from within the marines.

Him asking his grandsons to join the marines is all to have them close to him and train them as sword agents to change the WG. Nah, Garp can't do anything because he knows to much and as we can see some things in One Piece are time sensitive. That's why he's building Sword, training Coby and Helempo and refusing being an admiral so many times. Garp took a major role in Rocks history and he will do it again. I think because of Sword and his lunarian like tattoo scar he's role is really big in future events.

I'm thinking the D clan originally created devil fruits (somehow) as a means to defy or battle god/s, and that is why it's a such a terrifying initial. Maybe that's what happened in the void century, it was sealed to protect that information! Also could be why Vegapunk's fruit was a failure, because he's not of the D clan? Just a thought.

I don't think Garp is a villain, for me he is one of the best characters and the one that tries to change things in the most difficult way. We still don't know how Dragon decided to make the Revolutionary Army but I think was in clearly opposition to the way his conservative father tries to change the world. The world of One Piece there is a lot of pirates that need to be stoped and for don't been trapped in a island the Marines can do it better them any government, they truly protect the people from them and are seen like the heros they are. Knowing this the World Government let them do there work to be the mask that occults their true face, occasionaly using them to serve there on propose via Admirals and up. I believe that when Luffy and Dragon take down the WG the Marines will continue existing. Garp is a man that don't believe revolution is the best way to change things, destroying what already exists to rebuild it all from the ground, he believes that way will just bring more death. Garp is that person that tris to change things slowly from inside the sistem, preparing the future generations of good and strong Marines that won't need the force and resources of the WG and will cut ties with it. He get to the highest rank he could without lose his independence while trying more and more Coby's. After all, we have three monkeys (Garp, Dragon, Luffy), and I'm pretty sure that Garp is "See no Evil" with his way of turning mostly blind eyes to WG's corruption, but it can also become him as the Justice in the end. After all, Goddess of Good Council, Themis, is 'blind.' Garp can be both the true symbolism of Justice and 'See No Evil' Monkey.

If we’re gonna trash Ging for not exactly ‘being there’ for Gon, I’d say Garp deserves at least as much criticism. I mean, by any vaguely ‘realistic’ standard of decency, Garp is a pretty horrible person. Among other things, he’s kind of a terribly abusive parental figure. And yeah, he ‘took care’ of Ace for Roger- by abandoning him in the woods with a bunch of criminals and regularly beating him to ‘toughen him up’. So there’s that. And yeah, he *sort of* ‘helped’ Luffy at Marineford- by not using his full strength to fight his grandson to stop him from saving his other grandson from being executed. And yeah, he ‘doesn’t *entirely* approve of the World Govt’- but he still actively supports a brutally authoritarian**, occasionally downright genocidal, regime. And yeah, “he’s easygoing and seems like a ‘nice guy’”... but that’s exactly what people say whenever they find out their neighbor is secretly a sociopathic serial killer (seriously, every time). So... yeah... there’s that... ** - Also, the whole ‘casually supporting slavery and... child trafficking...’ thing... :| Edit: Also also, his famous “I’ll never show mercy to ‘criminals’, but family, that’s another thing” line. That sounds kind of nice at first. But what he’s really saying is “it’s ok for *some people* to do ‘bad things’- and I decide who those people are” which... could be considered a sort of arbitrary moral relativism and extreme hypocrisy- more or less “the ‘law’ only applies to ‘lesser people’- me and *my people* can do whatever we want because we’re special”, which... that sort of thinking has historically exhibited a high likelihood to result in some rather abhorrent ideologies. Combined with the ‘brutal, genocidal authoritarian regime’ thing- there are some... uncomfortable... parallels... I mean, hey, maybe I’m overthinking things, but... just saying...

Garp is such a great character. He has a natural character conflict between his family and his duty as a marine. Despite this, I can't get over how he chose the marines over protecting Ace. He chose his duty over jis family, but his duty was to an ultimately corrupt organization in service to a immoral government

I think it’s pretty cool that Garp’s sense of justice is exactly the same as Luffy’s, just in opposite ideological sides. Both are completely impulsive and only think about the things that they believe to be right in the moment, taking down both crooked pirates and marines if need be, and don’t really consider long term consequences. They’re really cool parallels, and I’m so interested to see how dragon ends up fitting into that dynamic

One of my favorite moments from the series is when Hina comments that she can't believe how big of a figure Luffy has become and Garp responds "Not big enough." Which has always felt to me like he's had some big underlying plan for Luffy from the beginning. It's well documented now that he actively dislikes the world nobles, and my running theory is that he wanted Ace and Luffy to become Marines and change the world government from the inside. Which leads into the thought that he will probably side with Luffy if it means bringing about a change to the system.

Garp is, without a doubt, one of my favorite characters because of how accidentally influential he has been. I'm sure everything he has done, he has done with the absolute best of intentions, but I cannot wait to see the end of his story arc. I firmly believe he'll choose to help Luffy in the end. garp is probably the most interesting marine to me(along with fujitora,smoker/tashigi and koby.) with how he's a d that works with the marines hunting almost all the other d's,arguably one of the strongest people on the planet(pretty much the one piece version of popeye with how he has no devil fruit.:3) and understands the world govt's corruption along with sengoku to not lose his freedom being promoted unlike sakazuki. but loves his grandsons enough let them become pirates after trying to make them marines without force(outside beating luffy up only to fall asleep.)to cheer their actions causing mayhem to the marines to his friends annoyance,nearly lets the strawhats go before being ordered to stop them,depressingly let himself get hit to let luffy save his enemy's son(that he adopted from his rival.) along with nearly on the same murderous rage as whitebeard when seeing ace killed by akainu(and honestly think he would've with how much of his feats prove his strength.) and the closer the strawhats get to the end he will have to deal with his ideals causing most of the biggest events of the series and if he'll go and form his justice on his son &grandson's side but the huge mental/physical choice he'll do when confronted with it will be big.

I wonder what Rocks has done so not only Roger did acted in favor of the world nobles, but that Garp, a man who turned down the title of Admiral, fought for them. What happend. I think that Garp knows about the real meaning of the D, and knows that the World Government might start to hunt them down. So he entered the Marines, giving them the "power of the D" in exchange of them stop any idea of hunting them down, hiding instead their existence (like they did with Roger, changing from Gol D to Gold). Then pestered Luffy (and probably even Dragon before) to join the Marines to protect them. The theory could go on with the idea of Dragon having actually joined the Marines in his youth, but then after seeing the World Noble's behaviour up close, the cruelty of the World Government, and the execution of Roger for both being a pirate but for actually know the truth of the world, made him leave them to create the Revolutionary Army. (PS: For all we know, Roger might have actually talked with Dragon after having found the truth of 800 years ago, after all, he is the son of the man he trusted the most)
