You can help support this channel by purchasing parts for your Honda CH80 from scooter911.com/product-catego...
The Honda Elite 80 is one of the best selling and most produced scooter in the United States. So it was only a matter of time before one showed up in our shop with a blown engine. This particular scooter had served its owners for well over 11,000 miles but a catastrophic engine failure landed it in our shop.
The first step was to check the baseline of the engine. A compression test confirmed something was seriously wrong. The Elite's engine was only producing about 15 psi of compression. Thats WAY under the 150-180 psi a healthy engine produces.
After removing the engine the valve train was inspected for a bent or burned valve. The cylinder head was then removed and we discovered the piston had a dramatic amount of movement inside the cylinder bore. After removing the cylinder we found that the piston had completely shattered!
A thorough inspection of the bottom end found that the crankshaft, crank bearings and connecting rod were still in good shape. So we fished out the piston pieces with a pair of chop sticks and proceeded to rebuild the top end.
The final speed bump was discovered when decarbonizing the head. The intake valve had been damaged on the sealing surface so a new valve had to be ordered and installed.
The first start of the rebuilt engine took place on a very cold (by texas standards) 32 degree day. After a few attempts with a pretty weak battery the engine roared back to life.
If you're in Austin Texas and you're looking for scooter, motorcycle, moped or ATV repair check us out at scooter911.com!

Love the videos, glad to see you have a new shop! I learned a lot from watching them and been able to fix most issues with my scooter... I did run into trouble with a 150cc GY6 scooter that keeps getting hot after about 15mins running, I tried everything and the only thing that keeps it from running hot is to "run it" without the belt for testing. Could it be a bent rod? replaced lots of parts..lots.

Yeah but don't make the same rookie mistake they made. They used Chinese chopsticks, and every good mechanic knows those are not compatible with Japanese engines. You should only use Japanese chopsticks on these Hondas or you risk blowing the whole damn thing up.

I have a 2017 zuma fx, I bought new. The valves aren't adjusted using feeler guage on my scooter. It's done ( I'm sure you know how its done) using little small caps. There Hydrologic, and you change out the little caps. Using a caliper and measuring to find out the right size to use. If you ever run across a scooter that needs it done, I would love to watch. GLS.

Awesome video. I have a 150cc Vespa and in the Vespa / Piaggio world one would simply use a 180cc Malossi kit to upgrade the cylinder head/piston instead of replacing with an OEM 150cc cylinder. Are similar cylinder upgrades not normally done on Honda scooter engines? I believe Malossi actually manufactures the OEM 150cc cylinder and piston for Piaggio.

I use one I bought off the MAC tool truck. I've had it for years and it's served me well. I know Mac doesn't make it though, I think it's actually manufactured by OTC. I did, however, replace the lower hoses that thread in through the spark plug holes. They eventually gave out, but that's par for the course when you use a tool almost every day. The lower hoses are snap-on and they're much heavier duty than any other sets I've seen. If I had to recommend a kit though it would be the thread-in OTC kit. You can even use the adapters for a leak down tester.
@meatcreap

Wow! Thanks for showing me what my top-end looks like without all that ductwork all over it. I always wondered how my Elite 80 was getting air cooled. There’s no vents or holes in any of the plastic body panels. My Metropolitan 50 is water cooled. So I guess that little fan on the flywheel is sufficient enough to cool my little 80? Thanks for the video!
@davk90
@davk90 2 жыл бұрын
neat but since elite 80 are so common and ratty running ones could be found for 200 to 500 bucks I would have not bother . Buy a parts scooter , drop the engine and reinstall . About the same amount of cash or less . No chance of any metal not being found or screwing up the engine latter. Great video just not what I would do cash wise but also the elite 80 might be harder to find where the person lives So I understand why they might.

Hey brother I got the same bike as that but red it's a beautiful garage kept has not been started in about 8-10 years he thought it only needed a carb clean that's why he parked it for all those years plus family to take care of. So I did all that and It still not starting I can feel the compression it's got spark and its getting gas . It's only has 2,282 miles on it I was checking out online they say you have to adjust the valve's every 2,000 miles is that true?
@Scooter_911
@Scooter_911 2 ай бұрын
Yes absolutely. The valve adjustment is pretty straightforward on those bikes and once you own feeler gauges it's technically free for life. I would also encourage you to measure the compression. 100psi is a lot different than 160psi but you can feel them both

@Scooter_911
@Scooter_911 2 жыл бұрын
Since we're only breaking in the piston and cylinder the break-in oil isn't as particular as if it was a fresh cam or fresh crank bearings. We're breaking this one in with Genuine 10w40 full synthetic. Its what we use on almost every scoot in the shop. Fabulous stuff. But to your point if this engine had a new cam and shim under bucket valve train or hydraulic lifters I would be using a mineral oil with an engine break-in additive.

this one had nearly 12,000 miles. That seems to be about the limit on the CH80 top end. The elite 150 and 250 went waaaaaay farther before needed much engine work. But you also have to consider the hours that would be to go 12,000 miles if your top speed is around 40. Also consider if 40mph is top speed you're spending a lot of time at wide open throttle. just some food for thought.
