I use paper towels but anything like that works. I don't want my cabinets all the way to the ceiling because my kitchen is on the small side, and I would feel like I was standing in a canyon. Plus I don't need the storage and even if I did, I'm past the ladder stage in my life.

I love that you consider the pragmatic aspects of decor like day to day maintenance. Too many designers seem to think, "Oooh, let's make this a trend because it looks cool," with no regard for whether it's practical. You acknowledge that not all of us want to be cleaning all day every day, or have medical issues that necessitate decorating with low upkeep in mind. By chance, did you grow up in the Midwest? We're very sensible people here. 😁

Sorry but open shelving in a kitchen looks awful. In my opinion, regardless of how “well styled” the open shelves are, it looks cluttered. It looks like you just couldn’t afford upper cabinets so you just tossed up some shelves. There is too much going on in a kitchen with appliances, sinks, faucet, tile, etc. that the last thing you need are those “styled” open shelves. Just scrape together the extra money and splurge on upper cabinets.

❤Spot on. Get a fly in the kitchen, anything on the shelves have to be washed before using. Convinced my self when buying my apartment with hanging open shelves in the kitchen and an open concept. They are AWFUL designs. Plus all of the cooking oil aerosols go all over the apartment.😢

Hi, Garret the Adorable. I recently moved to a place not too far from Vegas, (Saint George), and although I love my space, it's a builder grade tract house. I love it when you give advice for those of us in these ordinary spaces!! Thank you so much!! Also, I have a fan over my dining room table, and in this climate, the ceiling fans save a lot of energy. I'm sure you know about that. So if you ever have advice about fans, I'm all ears. It's not beautiful, but it's a good idea in my locale. Love you Garrett!! And Cornelius, too :)

New sub here !! We are in the middle of a kitchen redo, starting with the granite installation Monday morning 7/15/24. We designed the kitchen when we built in the 1990's. We have 28 cabinets 14 drawers and 24 foot ceiling in the kitchen. the top of the cabinets was a challenge indeed. Ive always had them covered in shelving paper, cheaply replaced a few times a year. But with all the newer products out there I'm in design heaven. Im doing a foil liner on the cabinet top with puck lights. you cannot see them and was a great solution lighting up that huge space. The cost was minimal, since no wiring was needed puck lights are .rechargeable and remote controlled. The shelf liner which you cannot see, bounces light up..Amazon bill was 68.44 ....you inspired my to try something new ❤🧡💛💚💙

I will be moving soon into a trailer that my kids bought and renovated for me and my husband - God bless them! - which sadly turned into a huge money pit! I wanted a pantry but am getting more of an open pantry shelving area about 3'W x 7'H x10"D. We live on an extremely tight and limited budget so adding a door isn't an option. My plan to deal with dust, given that I live in the desert, is to reserve the top shelves for a few display items and the rest will be made up largely of bins and large decanted items that can be easily moved and dusted. Or, in a worst case scenario, I'll probably put up a light-weight curtain on a tension rod. Not ideal, I know, but there are always things you can do to make problem areas at least a little more manageable. --Thanks for the great video, as always! 💛

Excellent video, as usual you are right about everything. Thank you in particular for mentioning crappy builders' paint that is flat and impossible to clean. Now if there was only a way to force landlords to watch your videos. My rental's kitchen, not just walls but the cabinets, window sills, and baseboard heater are painted with this horrible dirt magnet. It is especially bad on the drawers because they do not have pulls, so there's no way to open them without touching the painted surface making them constantly grimy. A friend of mine recently repainted her kitchen, covering over the easy-to-clean satin paint with horrible flat paint. When she tried to wash it, the new flat white paint started coming off, revealing the bright red satin paint. Ugh!

I definitely agree about glass lighting but also linen shades- they collect everything and never look good. Cabinets to the ceiling. Solid backsplash so no grout lines. Especially colored grout. I hate tile countertops and those awful textured or glass tiles on a backsplash- so dated. Simple, clean lines and classic design is always best. Builders don't think about how a space will be used - so always upgrade!! Thank you Garrett for another great video. ☀️🌴🦩😍😊❤️☺️🥰❤️❤️❤️❤️

I have brick floors in my kitchen (they were already in the home when we bought it), and although they are beautiful and everyone gushes over them, I have to set aside 8 hours every 4 months to deep clean them with my steamer and a bristle brush. Even with daily maintenance, the grout gets so gross, and the brick tiles themselves hide dirt. Follow Garrett's advice and do them just somewhere else-literally anywhere else.

All in the kitchen get a film of grease not really visible unless splatter on white. Even if you run a decent wipe daily like when your doing meal clean up, will still get a build up . I do the finger test. Run your fingers on cabs closest to stove, when they are dry and if they feey sticky or tacky, grease build up, isn't easily removed with soapy water. PLAN ON USING ELBOW GREASE. CLEANING DECORATIVE cabinets with build up is the shits!

Right now, there is bare, unfinished drywall where the soffits over my cabinets used to be. I had them taken down, and the contractor just put basic drywall up. Looks hideous, but the new cabinets will extend out past where the current ones end and almost to the ceiling (crown molding will be lining the top) so when the kitchen is done, you won’t see it. I can’t imagine just lining an island with it and not doing anything over top.

About tile backsplashes, I lived with a white tile backsplash in a rental from the 1970s, it was original to the space. I lived there for 3 years and it was very easy to keep clean, literally just spray bleached it very couple of weeks and wiped it down and it looked immaculate. The two problem spaces on a backsplash are behind the stove and behind the sink. If you let water sit behind your sink on tiles it is going to stain the grout the same way it does in a bathroom, but by and large behind the stove was very easy to keep clean. I am a fairly clean cook, I don't fry a lot of bacon or other really greasy foods, so perhaps that is why I found it so easy to take care of, but I have never had a tremendous problem with any backsplash, even drywall.

A mistake we made in our kitchen in our last home was getting alder wood cabinets. The kitchen designer at the time told us that alder is a softer wood but I was loving the cabinets and we got them any way. Soft wood cabinets chip so easily -we had to touch up paint them in multiple places. A piece of wood the size of a toothpick chipped off where we grab the handle on our silverware drawer. The hinges also come loose because it’s a soft wood so they need to constantly be tightened. Our beautiful cabinets didn’t look so beautiful after 8 years. We moved and remodeled our kitchen with maple-a harder wood. Alder cabinets do not hold up for the money you spend on them and look warn and beat up after only a few years

Putting cabinets to the ceiling only works if your ceilings are consistently even, which we discovered ours aren't. A level cabinet could be flush to the ceiling on one end, with a small gap at the ceiling on the other end. So we dropped them down...

The suggestion to cover the tops of the cabinets with paper may sound good but it's best just to clean that area if you're able to. I had a tenant that fried food often, covered the tops of the kitchen cabinets with kraft paper and vacated the apartment leaving me to deal with an infestation of roaches. Those critters were having a party under that paper! 🤢

I think my subscribers who use this hack are very clean people who change paper often and are making the recommendation in good faith that others are also keeping things clean and will change paper often. If people are letting their cabinets get so dirty that there are rodents, they may not be keeping things tidy in general. I always suggest though it may be very elementary that keeping a home very clean is a first step toward beautiful and functional design.
