We are constantly fed false information about Islam-claims that it is a religion of violence and that its sacred book is meant to inspire terrorists. There is no way to assess these claims unless we have at least some knowledge of the Qur'an.
How do the contents of the Qur'an compare to other sacred books? How has the text inspired difficulties of interpretation by the West and beyond?
Garry Wills is a professor of history emeritus at Northwestern University. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author.

As a student of theology I just started reading the Quran recently. I'd say it's one of the most amazing books I've ever come across in my life. I truely regret why not reading it before. The most fascinating thing about the book is that it's the same book at least for the last 1430 years. Not a single word has changed while that's not the case with the other religious books like Torah, New Testament, Vedas and Buddhist scriptures etc. It never lets your attention go away from the subject. Keeps repeating the topics again and again to stress and emphasize. No lenghty historical stories. Short and simple. I wish I knew Arabic so I could understand it better.

i am 31 agnostic (raised catholic) and i started learning arabic so i can read Qur'an in original text for this reason. i believe the sounds and linguistics are significant as the Qur'an was originally spoken aloud as poetry. i also want to discover mathematical mysteries within the linguistic rhetoric similar to ancient jewish texts.

@@olgaismag4422 peace be upon you brother. Here to answer your questions : 1- Allah says, “I have not created men except that they should serve Me” (Quran, 51:56). “And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and Allah is over all things competent. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire..”(Quran 3: 189-191) 2- "Oh humankind! We created you from a single pair of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know each other (not that ye may despise each other). Verily the most honored among you in the sight of Allah is the who is the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)" (49:13). 3- For such is the state of the disbelievers], until, when death comes to one of them, he says, “My Lord, send me back that I might do righteousness in that which I left behind (i.e. in that which I neglected).” No! It is only a word he is saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day they are resurrected. So when the Horn is blown, no relationship will there be among them that Day, nor will they ask about one another. And those whose scales are heavy [with good deeds] - it is they who are the successful. But those whose scales are light - those are the ones who have lost their souls, [being] in Hell, abiding eternally. The Fire will sear their faces, and they therein will have taut smiles (i.e. their lips having been contracted by scorching until the teeth are exposed). (Quran, 23:99-104) Keep on reading the Quran and in shaa Allah we will find all the answers. 😘

Matter of fact he knows about more than an average Muslim. That is one. Second. I understood a lot between when i first read the Quran with English translation (arabic isnt my language) and the last time i did. The more you read the more you understand the wiser you become in everyday affair. A person claiming to have read the Quran and then goes on to litter a street or treat someone inappropriately or be harsh to animals etc has probably partaken of just a ritual not guidance. Quran is education about life and how to live it. Great effort by the learned Gentleman.

Why I say that all does books was struggling to complete and Quran came to fulfil.Nicolas tesla was inventor of electricity but he did not finish but we fulfill it.so that is how nature works.so if one way or another someone claim his prophet that speak to allah or god that we dont see that not make sense.

It is him who confers blessing upon you, and so do His angels that he may bring you out from the darkness into the light. And ever is he, to the believers, Merciful. Their greeting on the Day they meet him will be, "Peace." And he has prepared for them a noble reward. O Prophet, indeed We have sent you as a witness and a bringer of good tidings and a warner and to invite to God, by his permission, and as an enlightening luminary. Give good tidings to the believers that they will have from God great bounty. And do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites and leave their harm, and rely upon God. And sufficient is God as Disposer of affairs." Surat Al-Ahzab (33) verses :41-48

Got it wrong men, you fall into a trap : no matter how, or wich book you follow, the important thing is To love and respect God. By talking like this, it almost sound like a militant, bent on conquest. It is not the way To follow, and those who tell you this are leading you astray.

Most of America & west is green but Americans are still crazy about botanical gardens, lush green & backyards full of flowers & trees, & beautiful golf courses. Allah knows all humans or his servants love gardens not just Arabs& that is the reason Allah mentions gardens. Thus the reason cannot be the Arabia has deserts so Allah rewards the believers with gardens. Allah knows best

Thanks Prof. Wills I may add that although there were no known atheists in the 7th century, yet the Quraan does discuss all sort of different believes including atheism. One example is: (Or were they created from nothing or are they creators * Or created the heavens and the earth, but not sure) Surah 52 (35-36)

When the Qur'an talks about the issue of having up to four wives it's not only about having or not having enough to support them financially but it specifically says, and this is a short translation of the verse in Arabic: "ye may also marry two, three, or four but if you fear that you cannot do JUSTICE (between them) then marry only one". Sur Al Nisa (Chapter of Women) The most accurate interpretation of that is: if you can't get all their consent and be just or fair to each of them in love, support, time, and money then do not marry more than one.

Thank you for a true uplifting unbiased true video and representation of Islam and the Holy Koran. I was studying the Kabba-Allah (mystic ancient jewish tradition ) and the great Kabbalists who referred to the Koran as the holy Koran respected and realised the power of the Koran. This got me interested in Islam. Allah invites all muslims to study other religions. In aramaic the language of Jesus. The name for God is Allah.

The verse of striking a woman was explained by the prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم He did explain it like He did explain every single verse of the Quran, from cover to cover , I would love to hear him explain the verse because when the prophet companions ask him how we should strike a woman, He answered very Hard as a rule that they should do 1 first should never ever hit or strike her in the face 2 second shouldn't causes any pain and harm 3 third Shouldn't leave a mark on her body. They were surprised... saying it's like we should not strike them (women) The prophet comment was "exactly, you should not" that was his beautiful smart a genuine explanation

Quite an interesting lecture. The professor makes a bold and straight step into reading the Quran without any other sources. I would like to add some colors in regards to the answers he gave. - in regards to unbelievers, the word Kafir is what is often used throughout the Quran. It is a composed word with "Kaf" which the palm and "r" to see. It essentially means it is an individual who puts regularly his hand in front of his face and still pretends to see clearly. And it is not really related to what is or believe to be behind the hand. It is the behavior and not the object of belief. - Water is fundamental for life, your body is around 60%, the earth surface is about 71% . Water has a mirror effect. It is true that desert people may be more sensitive to its importance. History of earth should help have a better appreciation of its age. The word "jannah" is composed of Ja which is to come, and nah which means something that falls in a receptacle. Any place is empty until some life form falls upon it. - When a society builds self pride and forgets its roots it necessarily starts fighting the wrong wars. That is in a nutshell what happened to Islamic societies, that is why Quran is important to read . - The Quran deals with Marriage contracts because it is the most important fabric, the fabric of human beings. The same way it deals with inheritance, or usury. It relates to our very existence and perpetuity.

Indeed, in the alternation of the night and the day and in what God has created in the heavens and the earth are signs for a people who fear God" surat 10, verse 5-6

First we as Muslims thank you for your good intention and your efforts to help people know the reality about Islam .. but there are some mistakes you maybe don't read about it in Qura'n and like Atheism Actually Allah address them and said "How do you deny Allah and you were dead and He gave you life? Again He will cause you to die and again bring you to life; then you shall be brought back to Him." he address the Atheists who deny Allah except Atheist of course not "MUSRIK" who the other worships or take partners with ALLAH . other Verse "Were they created of nothing, or were they themselves the creators?". other Verse (7:180) And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing. and about Wives of Prophet like the Muslim guy said they are the Mothers of Muslims and every one of them their marriage for a reason .

+solomon duncan Muslims don't believe jesuss raised the dead. They believe he prayed to Allah (God)who granted him these miracles without Allah's (God's)will he jesuss could do nothing. By the way Ezra also raised someone from the dead so he is also god? And Adam was born with no father and mother so he is a bigger god? Good day!

Hello Brother Solomon Duncan; - I agree Jesus it is great prophets like all prophets. - I agree Jesus god gave him Miracles like raised person from the death. BUT : - I disagree about your claim " Allah did not Mohamed did not " :) ... WHY !! ANSWER : Chapter 3 verse 49 : " A messenger to the Children of Israel: "I have come to you with a sign from your Lord. I make for you out of clay the figure of a bird; then I breathe into it, and it becomes a bird by God’s leave. And I heal the blind and the leprous, and I revive the dead, by God’s leave. And I inform you concerning what you eat, and what you store in your homes. In that is a sign for you, if you are believers."" FOCUS : "" and I revive the dead, by God’s leave. "" ... "" BY GOD'S LEAVE "" it's mean with permission of god and this not " surprising " because it is GOD who gave him this Miracle. So, Jesus without God he can't do any Miracles :). ---- Now about prophet Muhammad ( god bless him & grant ) : - You should understand each prophet god gave him his own Miracles and in Islam there is no distinction between all prophets. Chapter 2 verse 136 : " Say, “We believe in God; and in what was revealed to us; and in what was revealed to Abraham, and Ishmael, and Isaac, and Jacob, and the Patriarchs; and in what was given to Moses and Jesus; and in what was given to the prophets-from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we surrender.” All Respect Thank You

This has come up several times. We did not make any cuts due to the content in this talk. This event was years ago, so I'm not sure why there was a cut at around 4:00. Someone might have coughed or maybe there was some other technical mishap. In any case, according to the transcript, in the part in question, Professor Wills said: "So, I started exploring that and giving some lectures and continuing to ask people. Even those who had claimed they had read it, it was very hard for them to answer any questions. "It is easy to misunderstand a different kind of scripture, and there was a whole lot of that out there, so I more and more started worrying about a world in which we engage with Muslims around the world without knowing really what they think." The full transcript is here: www.carnegiecouncil.org/studio/multimedia/20171003-what-the-quran-meant-and-why-it-matters-garry-wills We absolutely want our listeners/viewers to hear everything that Professor Wills had to say in this talk! This was a terrific event and we're happy that it's gotten so much attention. Any abrupt cuts are due to technical issues or mistakes on our part. Thank you for your interest in Carnegie Council.

Alhamdulillah! It's so facinating that non-Muslims like Professor Willis have exerted so much effort to understand the Holy Qur'an and share its real essence to others to clear things up. I love the reactions and the appreciation of the audience, except for one lady who claimed to be a practicing Muslim but is not wearing a hijab. That is so unfortunate because while professor Willis understood the Qur'an, the lady did not. Astagfirullah.
