I'm 70, and I live in Ohio and I have always used an electric blanket. They are "the bees knees"! We never had any problem with them. I have one now, and I love it. They still sell them, just about everywhere. I got my latest one at Walmart, a year ago. Holiday house fires often were the result of grease fires in a kitchen, or from candles burning too close to drapery.

I'm not even Jewish, and I can attest that when you're poor, you keep track of prices. Whenever my friends would go to Jack in the Box, I would scrounge up some change to see what I could afford on the dollar menu. 😅

I had a kind of more complicated childhood: we weren't actually poor, but my dad WAS a very poor child so, anyway, I always new how expensive things were because he was super conscious and open regarding the cost of things. On the upper hand, that tough me to not be an ungrateful rascal and being responsible about my finances which as a Millennial it's quite a thing.

My family also had a second-hand 2XL because we didn't have $54.87 for a new one. Almost all of our stuff was second- or third-hand, from flea markets and thrift shops and garage sales and such, so we didn't know any different. And that was one seriously epic toy, too. I'm glad Gary got his shot at playing with it. 🙂

Not only did the first version of 2-XL cost between $50 to $60, Each tape was sold separately at a retail price of $7.95 to $9.95 and there was something close to 50 tapes. If your parent's bought everything it would have cost about $450.

My family had one from a garage sale, and thank goodness it came with two tapes. My father paid like $20 for the whole thing. Even that was a LOT for us, but it was for three kids, so like $7 each. Still, it was one of the fanciest things we ever had. We never got any more tapes but we played those two for years and years, so it definitely paid off.
