You're just not embracing your passive-aggressiveness. If someone totally leaves their cart, you *take it and walk it somewhere and leave it.* Upon return, act totally confused. Direct confrontation won't ever work.

Another delightful option is to go shopping yourself, in their cart. Just remove a few of the choicest items. Then you can replace them with gum and magazines, which are always conveniently perched in the checkout lanes for this exact purpose.

The scenario is alien to many at the Montreal Festival-- it's very specific to the US., especially those from NYC and LA. His special, "It's About Time," was recorded at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. The audience for that performance synced up with every moment of that rambling joke. As a New Yorker, I know I did. Canadians and Europeans probably found the scenario really rude and off-putting. Gary's an excellent comedian who adjusted his joke for his audience.

I have to say my mom has a habit of that. She had a habit of leaving to get something right before her turn and not give me the card and id just sit there waiting a minute or two for her to come pay. Later on in life I just paid for it and had her reimburse me to save my embarrassment.

That is such a universal that people who get away with shot that they should not get away with long enough think that “you can just do that”. One of my past landlords was a highway patrol officer and he told me that almost every time if he pulled over someone doing 110 kph in a 100 zone, they would tell him, a police officer, that you were allowed to go ten kilometres over the speed limit and that you couldn’t be charged for that.

This was a performance in 2013 and he was in Canada. Trader Joe's wouldn't have been important to Canadians and Europeans, at that time or probably even now. He included the name Trader Joe's in his 2016 special because he filmed it in NYC and by then Trader Joe's had become well-known across the U.S.A as a high-end grocery store.
