Dr Gary Hartstein, M.D. is the former FIA Medical Delegate for the Formula One World Championship. Gary has been key in developing some of the FIA's new approaches and policies in terms of medical safety.
In 1997 Gary joined Professor Sid Watkins in the Formula 1 Medical Car and in 2005 he became the "Formula 1 Doctor" when Sid retired. At the end of 2012 Gary did not have his contract renewed as Formula One Medical Delegate.
I sat down with Gary at his home in Liège to talk about his life in Formula 1 and how it ended.

Thanks for all the kind words. As a very ummm verbose person, I had a blast. Was very anxious about seeing myself on video (like when you hear your own voice, I thought, only worse) but damn Mario has done an amazing job. Bernie has been nothing but supportive of me, from the beginning right to the end. I had the privilege of meeting him initially thru Sid, but even after, he always listened to me when I needed him. I have the deepest respect appreciation and love for him. A wonderful guy.

I have so much disdain for Jean Todt over what he did, it just makes no sense. You were a true champion for your passion to advance safety and medical responder performance on the F1 racing circuit and we can be forever grateful for your contributions. I feel your video was very complimentary, carried the right amount of concern over the changes they (he) made, and never even approached crying over spilt milk or anything near that. You truly carried yourself in a professional manner and we see what you are made of (which includes a lot of heart). Thanks for sharing your story and allowing it to be heard and your kind and heartfelt account of what you witnessed to include all those years with Sid. You are one of a kind Gary, thanks again!

The start is incredible. When the lights go out, between the heat and the dust and their exhausts, it gets a bit hard to see, and we see nothing of the action up front. But when bits (or cars) go flying, we know there might be some work. And then, because of how fast they are, it's the loneliest lap of the weekend, pushing to get around before they catch us on their 2nd lap (usually 25 sec ahead when we get back to standby), listening to race control and watching for flags for what's ahead.

Spa 1998 was quite impressive. As we passed the end of the pit garages we saw all the marshalls in the "triangle" inside La Source grabbing extinguishers and running. As we rounded the corner, it was like a war zone. We switched into "mass casualty mode" and tiptoed the car thru all the wreckage, visually evaluating to estimate how many casualties we had. Turned out, none. Rubens had a glob of what looked like clotted blood on the OUTSIDE of his helmet, turned out it was red paint from the tires

Good one Gary. Motor sport brings the best & worst out of people. The 'important people' you talk about use us as expendable chess pieces. Wish I could find a successor as loyal as yourself. Best to let go of the negatives - betrayal, disappointment, etc. Be proud of the positives - friends, achievements, etc. Take care, Dr Carl

Gary Hartstein wonderful interview Gary. It's shameful how they treated you. May I ask you, when you saw the video of Rubens Barrichello's car being tipped back over violently by the marshals following the collision with the wall, before you got there, do you shudder when you watch his head shaking left to right with thoughts of neck/vertebrae injury? Should the marshals have waited for you to arrive, before flipping the car, in order to stabilize his head first? As far as I'm concerned, I think the marshals acted irresponsibly, but then I'm not a doctor, just interested in your thoughts. Hope you're doing fine, and enjoying your fine cigars still. From a fellow cigar smoker!

Fantastic interview! As an Orthopaedic surgical trainee in Australia and a huge fan of motorsports in general and F1 in particular since my childhood in the UK, it's hugely interesting to hear your story. It's crazy what has happened in the last few years that you describe. It's like the FIA don't know what they are doing.

Many thanks Gary for having integrity for the doing this interview. I lost a good friend in a motor racing accident so I completely understand your reasons and support you 100%. Sadly some people don't understand or 'get' what Bernie has done for 'our' sport - their loss not ours, as far as I'm concerned. Thanks also to Mario also for doing this interview and posting it.

This is absolutely amazing stuff to learn about. Formula 1 is, of course, an unbelievably political sport, but politics and safety are two things which shouldn't mix, and tremendously skilled personnel shouldn't lose their jobs over personal disagreements. This interview has shed much light on the inner workings of the FIA as well as the incredible people who work behind the scenes to ensure safety and wellness for drivers, teams, and spectators. Thank you for your service, Dr. Hartstein.

Gary: thank you for sharing this. Amazing how the F1 world is comfortable with putting an unexperienced guy as director of medical facilities at all the races. Helps you to understand the power structures that drivers (and teams) acquiesced to the situation without demanding someone with experience. Nepotism writ large at the expense of other people's safety. Greta job you did: shame you got shafted in the end.

I understand that comercial interests are prevailing more and more every year in Formula One, and as medical student and F1 fan, that just makes me sad. Now I understand all the un-safety absurds seen last season, which ended in Jules Bianchi's "accident". Which I wouldn't call accident because it was complete and absoluely avoidable, and what's worse, it could have happened months before. Let's remember the German GP. First, the crane pulling Kvyat's car, then, some car (sauber I think) in the middle of the main straight, waiting for marshalls come from across the track!!! I didn't see most of the season, but I've seen nonsense everywhere. And now Alonso's "accident", which is being treated rather irresponsably by the team, the FIA and everything. Now I get to understand everything, finally.

I can answer straight off why things didn't happen, towards the end. Motor sport, aviation, criminal justice - these are all reactive environments based on the theory of risk that says "nothing bad has happened so far, anything we do might make things worse, so we'll only fix things after an outright disaster". This is not how scientists or engineers think. At this point, all the laws of physics that are likely to make a difference are fairly well understood. You have to apply the Scientific Method to test ideas and you have to understand that it is the system that matters, not just one piece, but all that is very elementary stuff. I can't speak for neurosurgeons (Sid Watkins) or anaesthetists (Gary Hartstein) but it sounds similar enough in concept that I'm satisfied they used appropriate methodologies and produced highly desirable plans of action. But political organizations aren't predictive, proactive or experimental, by nature. These aren't people with that sort of background. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" is the maxim, where "broke" is entirely defined by actual past concrete examples of being utterly broken. Partial examples and guaranteed future examples aren't considered broken. The rest should be obvious. Those differences in philosophy can't compete forever and he who pays the piper calls the tune. I'm sure we can all think of examples of what happens next, there's no shortage of examples in every modern industry. Formula 1 and the FIA are, therefore, very normal. Idiotic, but normal. The office politics aren't any different from those in the FAA, NASA or in most IT departments. The specifics, therefore, are of no consequence. The disease within politics transcends any example or set of examples. You can't fix F1 until you can fix stupid.

Last I heard, he had moved to Dubai and had closed some (all?) of his blogs, social media, etc. Not sure why Formula One did not renew his contract....but, Professor Sid was a tough act to follow...and I don't get the impression that Hartstein plays the political games very well, something Sid was good at.

I just hope that F1 does not suffer and major incident under the supervision of the current medical staff, because I'm not so sure they'd be as prepared as you Gary. At the very least they should have retained your services to help proper;y train the new heads of the medical division in F1 over the course of a season or two. GL
