@@kevinkrayna3097 Rap is #3 worldwide, or probably higher here in the US. Pop music is still king, but that's not really a kind of music and Rock keeps falling IMO. Plus what is Rock now? I don't mind the F word when used creatively, but most rap just repeats if to replace talent IMO. I feel the same way about LIV....it's a crap product. Lower standards, less effort, less work, and more concentrated money going into less hands. A young Lee Trevino or Seve can't show up and say, let me qualify. They have to first win worldwide, become popular, and then get that contract. 2c.

I attended a LIV event last summer. Had a great time. I do not remember the names of the teams or who was on what team. I do however remember who won the event and how well he played (shot a record low score) but I do not remember what team he was on. I am sorry I just don't see this going as this supposed expert sees it. Golf is an individual sport like tennis despite what GM says. Like electric cars this will see limited success and if forced down the throat of fans they will see fans walk away from watching. We all know money is the driving factor behind everything in professional sports but the PGA and LIV had better be ware they may kill the golden goose.

Colt, just because you don't "get" the team golf concept, doesn't mean others don't and that it won't work. Being employed by CBS to cover PGA Tour broadcasts you have a vested interest in seeing LIV fail, so I have to take what you say on the subject with a grain of salt. That said, professional golfers grow up playing team golf at the intra-club level, in addition to high school and college. It's only when they go professional that team golf stops. All LIV is doing is taking team golf to the professional level and includig the invidual component, same as high school and college men's and women's teams do now. It's not that difficult to wrap one's head around the concept, as it isn't anytihng new. It's only knew at the professional level. If you played high school and or college golf growing up I'd hope there'd be a part of you that appreciates this.

Exactly - look to the Indian Premier League (IPL) which is cricket. LIV is effectively setting up something similar to this. Indian billionaire team owners poached all the best cricketers across the world to play in a short form cricket competition. Everyone said noone would take it seriously. It is now the most popular format and noone watches the 'traditional' form of cricket.
@MikeBodo

@@whitewhale-gq2kc Excellent points and I heard much the same regarding the recent explosion in popularity of Cricket, which the Saudi PIF is heavily invested in. The same long game is being played in professional mens' golf, but supporters the legacy PGAT, such as Colt and NLU, can't see the forest from the trees and are clinging to preserve the past for dear life, as that's where their bread is buttered. Meanwhile, the golfing world is moving past them as they cling to tradition and their refusal to at least acknowledge and adapt to the paradigm shift will have them on the outside looking in brfore too long should the trendlines continue going in the direction they are.

No one watches LIV because the streaming services have made it very difficult to watch - I have KZfaq tv and there is no way to set LIV to record except going into each individual event and day within that event and set it to add to the library - if you don’t proactively do that, you’ll inevitably miss the entire event. Then once it does record, it doesn’t show up as new in my library. It is literally buried in my library. With the PGA, I can ask KZfaq to automatically record every pga tour round that streams on any channel - then it shows up as new in my library. Hmm…I wonder who has the better contract.

Gary McCord is the first to acknowledge the role of teams to this endeavor. These guys who think private equity investors are just going to give the tour $2 billion without creating value are not looking at it from an investment perspective. Just think of world golf like Formula 1 (and F2, F3, etc.). This is what elite golf, men’s and women’s, will look like.

Ok. How many F1 teams are famous worldwide except for Ferrari ?? How many of the current F1 teams except Ferrari existed 20 years ago AND won 5 races or more since then?? The team aspect is minor. Most fans have favorites in several teams, or from their own country. Nobody is hardcore fans of a team’s pilots whoever they are, just because of the team, except for Ferrari. How long did it take Ferrari to begin building its legend? 30 or 40 years, at least. And they are the only team that lasted and regularly succeeded. People love F1 for the competition, the variety, sometimes a few champions they admire or their countryman.

Understood but it’s a different sport. You think Titelist, Taylor, Ping, Callaway, etc. wouldn’t kill to sponsor a team? And the stars in golf will be the face, not the car nor the manufacturers. The target market doesn’t actually drive race cars but many play golf. In addition, I suspect Adidas now regrets ending their relationship with Dustin Johnson because they wouldn’t sponsor his entire team; the price just went up.

Phil explained it well. The Team idea will be huge because of the young players. Each team will create facilities for young players to come to and learn to be great golfers. Each team will have the first right of refusal for each young player when they turn pro. 15 teams each with top notch facilities through out the world and virtually all new young talents will come through LIV.

I can see Gary McCord vision, the challenge is how they get there. Somehow golf has to transcend from being a niche sport to mainstream and how long that will take, how much money needs to be spent and then IF it will ever happen. The real danger for golf (not the elite players) is boatloads of money comes into the game, the investors cannot achieve the level of appeal to justify the investment and then walk away. Back in 1970's tennis took off and more people started playing the game and tennis equipment sales went through the roof. One company looked at was happening in tennis and said golf will the next big thing. They bought club makers, clothing brands, shoe brands etc. The golf boom never happened, and that company sold everything they had bought at a loss, in some cases back to the people they bought it from. They had made a fundamental misjudgement about the game of golf. To play tennis you to buy a racket a couple of balls, you have shorts and top and go to a court and spend a hour or so. How many tennis courts can you build on a couple of acres of land? a lot. With golf you need clubs, shoes, balls, a course to play (green fee or membership) and a LOT TIME to play, its a very different proposition. Then take the amount of land and money to build courses etc. Nike built their golf brand on the back of Tiger and he transcended the sport, and even they could not make money from the clubs and balls and walked away. Even if potential investors see the growth not so much in the number of people playing golf but viewers, sponsorship, merchandise, gambling etc. its what's the catalyst for people to start supporting and watching? There are many sports NFL, Soccer, NBA, MLS, NHL etc. and they have proven business models. Are they not lower risk investments? Maybe the team element can work, maybe there is money to be made by investing in golf, but that's playing a long game, and question is can golf truly transcend the niche it is today? The truth is nobody knows the answer to that question, but it looks like people are prepared to spend boatloads of money to find out. My concern is the game of golf so many of us love gets damaged in process of finding out.

Thanks for your views you made a lot of great points. I think GM is hoping for this world wide success because that will grow the game as they always say which will most likely put some bucks in his pocket. I am sorry but in the US the team thing in golf isn't going to fly very high. That doesn't mean it won't elsewhere but not here. There is No demand for it. The golf fans out there are not searching for another team to pull for and spend money on. We have more than enough of them. I hope LIV and The PGA work something out that can work here in the US but if you think they can't kill the interest by monkeying with it too much just give NASCAR a look. They have tried to become the next NFL and they have lost at least half of their fans in the process.

Can you imagine the amount of revenue held back by PGA towards their players, and the amount of revenue not tapped by golfing industry by not having a team and merchandise which sponsore can buy in on... LIV supporters are country based. And yes, i can back Cam Smith and his team, and the spaniards now will have 2- 3 teams to back themselves. In fact, the amount of supporters backing a single team based on nationality will far outweigh what a single team in the states can achieve within supporters from their own state. So yes.. Wrong! Golf is only an indvidual sport at the junior amateur, elite amateur and professional levels. There's always a team component at the intra-club, high school and college levels. Most kids that progress through the ranks grow up playing team golf at some stage or level - in particular, college. Jordan Spieth played for the University of Texas. Tiger, Stanford. Justin Thomas, Alabama. John Rahm, Arizona State. Once these guys move on to the professional ranks they miss the team camraderie facet of the game, as they only time they get to experience that is if they're fortunate enough to be selected to the Ryder and or Presidents Cup teams. LIV is breaking the professional golf mold by introducing a team component, which a lot of players that have come to the league truly appreciate and enjoy. The team concept has proven successful at every level of amateur golf, so there's no reason why it shouldn't work at the professional. It's just going to take time for those who have been programmed to think golf is purely an individual sport to get over their bias.

I have been a golf fan (a player) for 60 years. I watch golf every weekend come rain or shine, but I agree with Colt, I don’t give a rats reared about some contrived “team” of golfers. I just don’t. As the PGA goes down the tubes, I find myself watching more and more women’s golf and senior golf and even NCAA golf. Gary keeps talking about revenue streams coming to enhance this golf super league. That’s all speculative B.S. Look at Wells Fargo, they are already pulling out of their tournament because they are balking at the $20mil purse the PGA wants them to pay. Right now LIV is paying mega-millions that is all coming from Saudi oil money. How long will they keep up this negative cash flow? It’s not exactly a thriving business model. If they pull out, or reduce their financial commitment, where is the money coming from to support team golf? Wells Fargo? Cadillac? If you look at the revenue streams currently, it is tv advertising and individual sponsor tournaments. And, of course, the Saudi Government. How much money is the Korn-Ferry Tour bringing in? Or the DP World tour, or the Asian tour, etc, etc? I can foresee that the LIV tour will drive the PGA tour out of existence as they try to do double back flips trying to match funds with LIV in an effort to keep their top players and they keep tinkering with the format which nobody likes or understands and eventually professional golf implodes on itself because mega-greedy players will have killed the golden goose in favor of a golden cash cow that has left the barnyard and Greg Norman will have left the gates open as he extracts his perverse revenge.

Here’s an analogy: world team tennis: top men and women formed into teams to play each other. It was around for almost fifty years, 1973-2021. Can you can name one team without looking it up? Probably not. People like Greg Norman have conflated the Ryder Cup and Formula One, and have come up with franchise teams playing a world circuit. I believe team golf won’t be able to emulate Formula One which, for most sports fans, is the antithesis of golf: fast, glamorous, romantic, dangerous-and it took many years to become that way. Put another way, Scotty Scheffler ain’t no Max Verstappen.

Tiger Woods hasn't accomplished shit since 2019 and that was one showing. The networks showed him and the top name players every damn hole. There are 70 other players on the course as well. Golf was an easy pick up an undervalued asset, LIV will have free reign to experiment with format to find what sells, PGAT and some of its pundits including this channel say if is not 72 holes, with a cut and played in 2's or 3's over 12 hours of coverage it is not sport. The New World Tour will hold about 10 to 14 events, and team golf will be part of it. The teams will have sponsors/owners. It will be about 75 top players in the fields - most likely with big purses and no cuts. Gambling will be a huge part of it. Worldwide gambling is a big market for a New World Tour. This is the solution. It's Problem, Reaction, Solution. PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour will merge into one tour for lesser ranked golfer outside the top 75. Dubai Ports World Tour will become a secondary tour outside of America for higher ranked players who don't play on PGA Tour. The problem was created by design. The solution was known from the beginning. No one is watching LIV Golf by design. It's all set up for the worldwide solution. PIF isn't stupid and the PGA Tour leaders are not this stupid.

Except for Monaghan and his gang at the PGA tour of course. Terrible management and decision making by the PGA have helped other tours start to get a foothold on professional golf. Golfers from all over the world will now have a chance to at least participate. Look at the LPGA. Half of the players are from Asia and their winning most of their tour events. Lets face the current golf environment. The PGA Tour, USGA, and R&A have incompetent leadership stuck in the 1960s. If the PGA Tour had competent leadership, when LIV emerged, they should have said players go play whatever events and you want. The fact they tried to pull a power trip, and said you go you are suspended was asinine, because then players started looking at things closer, and exposing the PGA tour hiding money, and keeping money for themselves that should have been going to the Players all along. Now LIV is gaining more press and getting alot of really good, to Elite Golfers jumping ship over to LIV. Then you have these maroons at the USGA and R&A wanting to take the ball and equipment back to the 1960s. That kind of mindset, appeals only to people that will soon be 6 feet under. Horrible leadership has caused this fracture.

Your explanation is perfect. Thank you! You explained what is driving this team concept perfectly. The concept may be very successful in Europe and elsewhere but in the US it will not be. That doesn't make it a bad idea just an idea that will both succeed and fail depending on the market. In the US we have plenty of team sports, football, baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, hockey, etc.... Golf is not one of them. Most people in the US have No idea what the Ryder Cup is or The Presidents Cup. We see golf and tennis as individual sports keeping in mind college golf which does have teams has very low fan interest. I attended a LIV event last summer and enjoyed it but the team concept didn't even come into mind. No one cared who's team someone was on except the golfers and the dudes on the TV coverage. You mentioned F1 which I watch on occasion but that is also alien to most US viewers and enjoys very limited interest here not helped by the fact one dude won almost every event. Not much drama in that. It comes down to perspective. Possibly you and your buddies will enjoy the teams but here in the US it isn't going to fly my friend. There is just 0 demand for it. It is hard to create a demand for a product when one doesn't exist.
