Oh, the great Gary Moore. No one played the guitar better. The man was a wizard, that understood what to play, and when not to play it. For me, he is the greatest player I have ever heard.

The guy seen in the video playing the Uilleann Pipes is Paddy Moloney, the founder of the Irish musical group, The Chieftains. Gary Moore RIP.

Gary Moore was one of the best blues guitar players who could hold his own in the rock world. His expression on the guitar was unmatched. Gary Moore will forever be a legend. He was a phenomenal guitarist who had an excellent voice. It was a sad day when he passed away

I wonder if that was a Uilleann pipe? It's a Irish variety of the Scottish, but pumped up by using the elbow. If you've seen Nightwish their 6th member Troy uses one.

his "Victims of the Future" album is one of my all time favorites. "Devil In Her Heart", "Law of the Jungle", and the title track "Victims of the Future" are epic. RIP to one of the best of all time. when Greg Lake of ELP released his solo album "Maneuvers" Gary Moore was the only person he thanked in the notes of the album. for an epic instrumental, check out "Alone".

I saw him live in my city here in Sweden 1990 at the Concert Hall. The last encore he did was The Messiah and man did he played his heart and soul out or what?! He did it with lots of improvisation and with that passion and feeling only Gary could create when he played.

A great tribute to Gary's Irish roots and spirit in this song. he often merged his own music with the stuff you can still hear today in the pubs in Ireland. Anyone who knows the Irish landscape and its people's strong connection with their culture and music knows that without it there would be no Gary...nuff said.

Which were extremely rare in rock music back then (well, to be fair they still are) - this may even be their first use in that genre. Now the best-known performer on them is Troy Donockley of Nightwish! The Celtic rock vibe is a perfect fit for them - I mean, who the heck else has an uilleann piper in the band?

The instrument you are referring to is called uilleann pipes. Irish bagpipe. The air is pumped from the elbow. Basically the song is traditional Irish music rock.

This is the album i liked the most of him, when he shifted from rock to blues i was very sad because I thought 'Still got the blues' was pretty bad (And still do). But much later when i heard a live blues performance of his i understood why he dedicated himself to it because I've never heard a more amazing and expressive blues guitarist in my life. :)

Now you guys gotta check out Blood of Emeralds with Gary and/or Black Rose with Thin Lizzy two epic songs with a very clear Irish/Celtic influence just like this one. It's not bagpipe but close it's called Uileann Pipes and It's the Irish type of bagpipe so to speak.

They used a drum machine for this song. Of course they were able to replicate it with a drummer later, but it goes to show how good Jukka Nevalainen (Nightwish) was, well I still say is as I hope he will be able to return one day (to take a line from this song). I remember hearing this when I was 17 and apart from Out in the Fields it was really the only Gary Moore song I knew... within two months I had all his solo albums and still think he is the best sounding clean guitarist ever.

The late and great Gary Moore no wonder Miyako (Lovebites) is such a fan the man made you feel every note he played on that weapon, to the point you would swear it was crying. Anything he has done is great a true master of that instrument. Here one of the old Moore renditions of a old English song that dates back to the late 1600's. A more tribal sound that most of the covers.

Fantastic to see your reaction, the Wild Frontier album & the 12 inch single version are far superior to this edited version. I vividly remember hearing the UK first radio play of Over the hills & far away on the Friday night rock show in November 1986 presented by Tommy Vance & I just thought it was brilliant. The uillean pipes really add to the song. Sadly I never met Gary, I did see him play live fortunately. I did however spend 6 hours in the company of Tarja Turenen former lead singer of Nightwish at a recording studio near Moate in County Westmeath in the Republic of Ireland in 2007. Gary was part of the holy trinity of musical geniuses from the island of Ireland Van Morrison, Rory Gallegher & Gary. 06.02.2011 we lost one of the greatest guitar players ever. R.I.P. Robert Gary Moore.

Loved your reaction. Agree both the original by Gary Moore and the cover by Nightwish are great. I strongly recommend a third version, Over the Hills and Far Away by Patty Gurdy. She plays an instrument you may never have seen or heard before. Not going to spoil the surprise, if you are curious, but her cover is also excellent, and true to the original.

Gary did not write this song, it is a cover version of an old folk song from the 1800s.

@@DrSkeff, while Gary Moore retained the line "Over the hills and far away," the lyrics are completely different. The English folk song is about service in the King's or Queen's Army, depending on the time period it was sung. The basic melody line may have a few similarities, but Gary Moore composed the bulk of the song, music and lyrics. Calling it a cover is a bit of a stretch, IMO. The 1990s British TV series Sharpe featured a version of the English folk song. If you listen to it, you'd be hard pressed to think of the two versions as the same song.

Probably already mentioned, the quick inclusion of Paddy from the Chieftains in this video. If not familiar with them, you should be. Celtic band but highly influential to many rock bands. If there was a real music hall of fame, they'd be first ballot inductees.

And come to think that Tuomas did much more new aged version of this. This sounds so weird because I've only heard the NW version of this song. Origina,ly i thought Tarja had so much part writing or creating this song that was the reason she got rights to it. But in Denver Debacle NW p.ayed this song featuring Alissa White and Elize Ryd. Those girls(young beautiful women) sure saved Tuomas's ass that day. And that was final nail concerning Anette being former NW front woman. She got too big for her fans, Diva syndrome. Didn't wanna do smaller venues anymore. But being in a band that is/was that popular can do that to anyone i guess. Everybody shouting your name like crazy, asking autographs, interviews and such 24/7 every day of the week, throughout the years. Well it turned alright when Floor said yes.

at 5:19 i think it's called "Irish War Pipes" and the drums were war drums. I read that the story ends with the guy spending 10 years in prison and his lover lady writing him letters. ah i found it!: "Another familiar face in the video is Paddy Moloney of the legedary Irish folk group The Chieftains. He is playing a bagpipe in the video, but has never been credited with actually playing anything on the song or album, so was likely just around/available to pop in. He certainly adds a lot of clout to the Celtic credentials of the song!"
