I Made a Gary Oak ROM Hack of Pokémon Fire Red. And it was a Hardcore Nuzlocke!
Gary Oak was the OG rival in Pokémon. And lets be honest here: he was better than Ash for quite a while. But for some reason, people like Ash more. So lets play a hardcore Nuzlocke of Pokemon Fire Red as Gary. I bet he could have been the Kanto Champion!

I love this but I have a request. Could you do one where the gym leaders make more sense than in the series? A professional gym leader who’s been doing this for years is beat by children who just started their journey..it doesn’t make sense. I think Ash wouldn’t have been able to beat Brock for example unless he trained up a Mankey or something..and I think Brock’s Pokémon would be pretty strong. Or what’s the point? He’s weaker in series than random people who aren’t gym leaders. So I think Brock, right from the start should be at least 1/4 as strong as the elite four. Also do all Pokémon trainers from any city have to start at Brock? Like do they have to travel all the way from Cinnabar to Pewter to begin their gym badge journey?

For a lot of the badges, yeah he did. He worked so hard he got 2 extra badges, and still decided to fight Giovanni.

Tbf in anime there are many off screen fights ash does, like we saw he has ten victory streak we at most only saw half of them so it's possible ash also battle just as much trainer also tbf ash did had more info on pokedex going on, like oak acknowledge his research outside of battles

There were multiple gyms that didn't show up in the anime, trainers need to beat "at least 8 gym and earn at least 8 badges is qualified" , didn't say any limit amount of gym badges

Yeah, though it wasn’t really shown in the anime, there are more than 8 gyms to chose from. You might remember the episode with the scyther and electabuzz guy fighting each other. They were the leaders of two gyms attempting to get officially recognized by the indigo league. So we don’t actually know how many badges are possible

Before May showed up, it was impled in the pamplets for the Gen 1 games that Ash and Gary were 12 year olds when they started their journey. Misty 13, since she is about 6 months older.

*Ash wasn’t the worst of the 4 Pallet town trainers. Only Ash and Gary made it to the top 32 and top 16, we never hear of the other trainers. If the other two trainers did rank well in the league we would’ve heard about it for the sole purpose of pushing Ash on a narrative level*

What if… Now this is just me thinking this; Melanie (who had Bulbasaur) and Damien (who had Charmander) were the other two from Pallet Town but never knew who Gary or Ash were. As far as I know/remember, Ash never mentioned Pallet Town to them and we never see anyone in the league with a Venusaur or a Charizard (aside from Ash)

I haven’t watched all of the anime, but I’m a HUGE Gary fan! My favorite part of this is that you obviously don’t do Gary’s voice, but your character of him is spot on. You killed it with his narcissistic and cocky attitude, and the jokes and memes weren’t in your face and instead were just funny. If you wanna make more Gary vids, you sure got my vote! 😁

@@NuzlockeJoe And, in retrospect it's foreshadowing for him eventually giving up being a trainer to become a Pokemon Researcher like his Grandfather! It's a nice touch both ways! Shows that as a trainer, his arrogance is at least well-founded, but also the start of him getting more interested in studying Pokemon than battling with them. Good stuff!

I honestly love how you have a version of the game that actually let's you play as the rival... (When I was a kid I used to assume that if you played the other version of the game you'd be the rival...) It's not too much of a story change but just enough of one... (Also 3:29 I think they probably didn't Battle gary...Period...The sisters kind of just...gave people the badge in the anime) Also That dialogue you made is hilarious

I'll always have respect for Gary. As a kid 'beating' the elite 4 not healing; blissfully unaware that: GARY MF OAK already beat me to it! And the real championship battle just began, taught me so much. I always liked Gary, he had a Jolteon for me (I always beat him during the story) but he got his revenge (at first). I grinded, bought revives, and re-tried until I finally beat him.

I don't like how the Episodes are out of order. Ash being at Lavender Town should have had 5 Pokemon as that was before he caught Primeape. Umbreon against Sabrina is a cheat because Eevee was still Eevee when Ash returned from the Orange Islands it would have made more sense for him to use Scyther. The 2 Giovanni Battles could have been stand ins for the Gym Leaders we don't know of. Champion battle Ash could have used Kingler & Muk as he used those during the tournament. If you go with Orange League Team you could have used Tauros as well as Ash uses it at Pumelo Island.

Eevee shouldn't have been evolved at all in this run if it was going to be Kanto-specific. He still has the Eevee when he leaves for Johto in the show.

I did actually think about including them, but I decided that unless we say Gary use them in battle, I wasn't going to use them. He already has a stacked team I didn't need any more. But in the johto region, I may include them, we'll see.

Ash had a typical loser vibes but somehow fortune was always with him. Gary had the typical poser vibes. He tried his hardest but was ultimately bad at doing it because he would always drift off into the extremes. Ash was alone, he bought a cheerleader group. Ash had unevolved Pokemon and he forced the evolutions on his monsters. Ash interupted his journey to help others while he ridiculed the weak. But later on he was absolutely the better trainer and human. While he was able to accept losses, Ash would cry. Gary created a bond with his Pokemon, even though he was horrible at the start. I think the battle against Giovanni was not just epic for us viewers.

Based on the video games and the anime on 100% certain that professor oak gave Gary a lot of free Pokemon to help him with his Pokedex and give him an edge as a trainer 😂 in the video games when you run into him he states to have more Pokemon than possible in three meetings the only thing that would make it possible is through copious trades or if professor okay I've been gifting him Pokemon along his journey has he reached certain milestones

Gary would know about the Diglett because he is smart like his grand father, the only reason Gary isn't stronger than Ash is because in Anime its not about how smart you are, it more about how much "friendship" you build with your partners, that is why Ash's un=evolve pokemon are so strong.

Great channel and video. I have a serious question. How did you learn how to hack Pokemon games? I just got back into Pokemon after 20 years, and I want to learn how to do the same types of things (change Pokemon you encounter, change text, change characters, change colors, change stats, etc.). I'm primarily interested in the original games that were available on Gameboy. Any tips on how to learn and what to purchase? I have a Gameboy Color, Pokemon Blue, and a MacBook Pro currently.

These kinds of hacks are done on Roms not cartridges. I dont know exactly how for pokemon but I know for fire emblem they have an app called fe builder.

Thanks! So I have no experience with gen 1, but I still believe I can help you out. Here is the website that has the decomp files for each of the pokemon games. Basically, you can get to a point where all the code can be opend with a code editor, like visual studios, and you can change it there. I feel like instead of giving the final Ash fight Venusaur and Blastoise, which just feels totally wrong, you should've just given his Squirtle and Bulbasaur Eviolites, and have them be lv80+ Highly doubt a lv 80 eviolite squirtle is much weaker than a 60 blastoise

I just changed the code to make him evolve at level 37? Instead. I didn’t do that for anyone else, but if you wanted to the universal Pokémon randomizer can modify a Rom to allow those evolutions
