When Gary was at Sheffield United I went into the petrol station at the side of the ground, The Blades players was in the shop buying sweets and chocolates for the coach trip to an away game in the FA Cup against Arsenal......I joined the queue next to him, he started talking to me, we had a chat and a laugh about buying the sweets and stashing them on the coach, he was winding some other players up but included me in the banter....he was like an old mate that I'd not seen for a while, he was so easy going and likeable, was such a great friendly guy, was like I'd known him for ages......will never forget that one moment I met him....RIP Speedo, gone but never forgotten.

My brother took his life a few years ago, just wished he realised that people, family his kids cared about him more than words. For me suicidal thoughts are temporary anything can change how your feeling in yourself on any given day, just hearing a word of encouragement from a friends or loved one, doing a hobby you enjoy or even hearing a song that makes you think of a happy time. Mental health and dark thoughts can be temporary but taking your life is Permanent. For anyone feeling low or suicidal please reach out to anyone who can comfort you just by listening or being there, because trust me those same people once you’ve gone ahead with taking your life will feel devastated and would have done anything for you to call them in your hour of need. There are always solutions that can prevent suicide I know it’s insidious and can make you feel despair and desperately alone, but the truth is your not you have so many people that would drop everything to save your life or to help you get better in yourself. Please choose to reach out to a loved one or anyone you feel comfortable talking to your soul is worthy of living

Ive suffered from serious depression and I knew people cared/care about me, that alone caused me the most pain. I didn't feel at all worthy. I felt empty, and I felt the love I got from others was built on false premises - that's premises not promises. I felt every moment someone spent trying to love me or support me was a moment of their time wasted, it ate me up. The only way I managed to pull myself through the depression was isolating myself, getting away from well wishers, smashing my phone so nobody could message me, I went off all social media. Since then I've never once attempted suicide. I've kept myself managed and slowly introduced people back into my life at a rate I found manageable. I went from being a severely depressed socialite to now a part reclusive but content person. A lot of people who suffer depression feel overwhelmed, what we live in modern society is not what we're built for, we have to adjust our whole lives and not all of us can do that. For me the best thing I had was therapy because it taught me ways to learn my own body, sometimes we simply don't know why we feel the way do and because of that there seems to be no solution. Knowing you're loved doesn't automatically give you value, you're brother will have known you loved him, he will have loved you. In severe states of depression love becomes pain, and it's a cutting uncontrollable pain, similar to heartbrake. If some even so much as offered me a hug I'd start crying immediately. I had to reel back and recharge, and whenever I feel down I d the same thing again. I don't believe I'll ever go so low again because I have my own method of pulling myself through. My point is, there's nothing to lament and nothing to beat yourself up about, getting through depression is a personal journey and you have to learn yourself somehow during it otherwise it will kill you, as it should've done to me.

Amazing interview with Dan Walker. Vivid memories of that day. Heard about his death in the pub, before going to the Liberty Stadium to watch Swansea vs Aston Villa. The mood was so low and the game was so unimportant. I left my seat early, walked out of the stadium and was interviewed by a BBC reporter and cameraman. To this day, I have no idea what I said when asked about my feelings about Gary Speeds suicide, because I had watched him the previous night, and his eyes gave it all away. It didn't shock me. I'd seen those eyes so many times in the mirror. Luckily for me, I was able to tell my best friend the way I was feeling, and am still here today to write this. It only takes a couple of important words, and you'd be surprised what true friends are able to do for you, mark my words. To this day, I have my down days, but I always think of Gary Speed, and wonder if he'd still be with us if somebody had seen it in his eyes. RIP Gary Speed.

Wales at this WC have been a disgrace, possibly on par with Qatar. Similar sentiments for any man taking a cowardly exit from his problems. Rumours of his fondness for rear exits was about to be reported in the press no doubt hastened his decision. Life has a way culling the weak from the pack, how would poor, pampered, millionaire Gary have coped with life had he lived on a council estate earning minimum wage? He was among the top 2% in life & chose to abandon his family leaving them infected with grief for the remainder of their days. Words sad, selfish & craven come to mind. Having worked in the funeral industry in for almost forty years and have been involved in hundreds of suicide funerals (in some capacity) whether it be arrangements, directing a funeral, chapel viewing and pall bearing, the overwhelming consensus is that ‘no one ever saw it coming’ which is so sad as my philosophy on life is, is that neither the best day or worst day of your life never lasts more than twenty four hours and that their is and contrary to popular belief always has been a community of help for anyone who is struggling and my advice to anyone who is struggling just reach out to someone and ask for help, problems can almost instantly be halved once you pluck up the courage to speak out. As someone who contemplated suicide a decade ago, I see sadness and pain in Gary's eyes in the Football Focus footage. I wish he'd opened up to someone that night, but as Dan said, people can appear relaxed when they've made the decision to end their life. I hope Gary's found peace wherever he is now. Rest in eternal paradise, Gary

Sadly, too many people are still unable or unwilling to talk. I've only ever been down bad once thankfully, I bottled it all up, lost all motivation...and it came to a head one day....but thankfully I had the ability to swallow my pride or whatever and talk to my wife. She put me right over the next few days. In my opinion, there's always a way to fix whatever you feel is broken, you just need help to fix it sometimes and people will want to help if you swallow that pride and tell them how low you've gotten. If you have no family or friends, please go to your doctor, call the Samaritans etc. It's never, ever too late. Your life is worth trying to fix. Every life of every good person is worth fixing.

As someone who has tried to do something very desperate many years ago, I think ‘there but for the grace of God’. Such a tragic loss for all who knew and loved him. Suicide leaves an awful legacy ❤

Guilt is the classic long term side effect of those who have lost people close to them through suicide. It's a pain that probably never goes away even though in truth they are not responsible. Dan Walker will carry those feelings for the rest of his life and that's just a sign that he cared deeply for Gary Speed.

I still believe that football still has a long way to go to helping retired players for life after football and even those like Gary who went on to becoming successful and innovative managers or seek other roles in the media, especially managers regardless of how successful they become will (if not publicly, but most definitely privately will concede it’s not the same as playing) which probably concurs with the fact that the most successful managers have had (and let’s be kind) not the stellar careers as more successful players and the most successful players very rarely enjoy the success in their managerial roles. Football is fickle fans are fickle success is everything lose two games as a manager and your instantly under pressure. I believe Gary was a victim of his own success both as a player and a manager and that inevitable pressure to keep succeeding will inevitably lead to insurmountable pressure. 11 years on Gary Speed the legend rest in peace

Sometimes, people who have decided to end their life, they can appear the opposite of what you might think they would be like. Instead of sad and depressed, they can look at ease, relaxed. I'm not saying that's what happened with Gary, but it is a possibility why other people might not have picked up on it.
