I've refereed for approaching 30 years and I'm also a Referee Tutor. i remember this game and the furore over it and in order to comment, particularly on the 2nd dismissal, you have to have the full angle. First one was DOGSO and was clearly correct as the player had got clear of the defender and was in on goal. If you say it wasn't a dismissal then you have to say that you don't believe it to be a foul. The second one was for violent conduct - striking an opponent - as I well recall that the angle from behind the goal showed that the Barnsley defender swung his arm and "backhanded" Owen in the face. As for the third, how much more verbal do players think they have a god given right to throw at officials. Willard was not my favourite Ref of the time, but I met him once sometime after this and he told me that the reason he went off the field was that the head of Stadium Security had requested he did until order had been restored. As a West Ham fan, I've no love of Liverpool, but on the day I feel he got more right than wrong.
