I cant say how much this tip has helped my playing, esp being self taught. I originally read this in his book, 101 Bass Tips The Pros Use. Ive never really heard of Gary Willis, but that book is the bomb.

Gary plays with a very light touch. He even said it was difficult to do in the beginning because we all want to dig in in the heat of the moment. I read an interview and he said that he hadn't played his instrument for weeks but it was easy to come back to it because he doesn't use that much force in his playing. Not necessary to build back muscle strength. Gary's techniques (& ramp) are unique and the proof is in the playing. Listen to his sound and how fast he can play when he needs to.

I read about this in Mick Goodrick's the Advancing Guitarist. It's great advice for anyone who plans on playing a stringed instrument for hours at a time.

I'm definitely giving this a try. My left hand just won't relax and that harms my playing.

Every word true. Only time I vary from it is when I REALLY want a certain aggressive sound that only comes from a hard pluck, but mostly we all really need to lighten up and let the amp do the work.

This is very true, but also very depending on the bass you're playing, so if you have multiple basses, you might have "softer" ones and "stiffer" ones, no matter the set up

I should take this advice and transfer it to double bass. I'm always having trouble with my left hand cramping up.

Of course the set up of the bass action and neck relief is crucial, otherwise it is impossible to not use a TO hard left hand touch!

Yes, it's his signature instrument that he designed and developed with the company. It's the GW105. It costs around 3k and has a Bartolini pickup. There is a less expensive version, the GW35. It costs around $600.

Simple: practice. If you play fretless that accuracy is something that you must take care at first. If you play fretted, it's so much easier to get, since the fret itself helps to get the right position.

The doesn't apply to the left hand which is what he's teaching here. In regards to the right hand you're correct though

for a common bassist? sure, specially the right hand advices he gives. Virtuosos have their own ways, a good amount of them, even if they are really good players, are kinda careless on that matter or they just learnt the old way of playing and with that they feel good. Look at his right wrist, it's straight with the arm. That's really useful for endurance, strength and health, but the old bassist uses that 'broken wrist' technique (that I find really painful) and still they can play well.

@jsxtal Jaco did not play like a brute but with very specific control. He didn't play as hard as you may think.

Regarding Gary's "play lightly" approach, it's an Interesting concept, but what happens when you want to play other styles of music that demand some aggressiveness like slapping. You can't play soft or lightly when you slap and pop can you? Maybe I'm wrong. If you want to be a versatile bassist that plays all styles, is it possible to play very lightly and use a ramp?

he is talking about your fretting hand pressure not your plucking hand but in another video he says turn amp up for plucking hand to have more dynamics but if you did want to play lets say metal id suggest just turning amp lower and playing harder but that probably isnt the textbook answer

Ok, it's been six years since your comment, but nevertheless. You don't need to play hard when you are slapping. Furthermore, hard slapping just sounds bad. You can find Louis Johnson solo when he slapped his bass like it was his enemy, it looked very cool but the sound was meh. It was just a stage gimmick, normally Johnson slapped much lighter than that. More importanly is that you just won't be able to play fast complex lines with hard slapping and high action, your arms will be fatigued very fast. You don't need physical strength and stamina to play bass, it's a stupid myth. Pro players have mental stamina, ability to relax their muscles for a long time. Healthy developed body muscles though help with good posture, overall feeling and your endurance for holding the bass for a long time.
