I really like to have a GW bass ... but what bothers me a lot is the lines and the dots on the freight fretboard (disturb me) ! I have been too used to it and for a long time to play fretless whithout that (Just A Few Dots On Side of the fretboard). 😌

Sincerely Gary, i'm disappointed: what about a simple correct control of dynamics by **pushing up the master volume** and then manage??

"Having headroom in your right hand." What?
@jcmf10
@jcmf10 7 жыл бұрын
Headroom is the space that goes from a bad signal-to-noise ratio up to a distorted clip from too much signal. What he is saying is that basically we should be able to control the dynamics (signal amplitude) with our right hand, this is, being able to emphasize selected passages for our own musical experience.

@@jcmf10 put a different way, you have the ability to play cleanly and evenly or precisely at all volumes (eg with very soft or powerful strokes or anything in between) without distorting timing or dynamics.

To me, this cat sounds at times almost exactly like Jaco Pastorius whenever I hear him solo, but, Jaco used only 2 fingers and got his sound from an old world Fender Jazz Bass, not to mention a few other things. What is it about Gary Willis people (mostly white dudes) like so much? Is it because he looks like an unassuming low key white guy from some part of the mid western United States? I mean, he can really play.., and he is truly good, but, he's not 'better' than Richard Bona, Jeff Berlin, Matt Garrison, Victor Wooten.., or even Marcus Miller when he was an early 20-ish year old on Urszula Dudziak's "Future Talk" album. Willis isn't playing anything any that different or more groundbreaking than any other high level fusion electric bassist has. So, what gives here? Is it his "good 'ol boy" look? I'm just curious.

For me personally, the answer would be his tone and choice of notes when he is soloing. It’s hard to quantify it why I like it so much. All the bass players you mentioned are fantastic, but my favorite would be Gary Willis of that list you mentioned.

Go listen to "this cat"'s band Tribal Tech and then come and tell what's different about his playing. In the list of bassist you mention, the only guy to come somewhat close to Gary in terms of musicality and facility on the instrument is Jeff Berlin.

Ya mean.. like Charlie Parker and Art Tatum? Because, I don't remember any "white musicians" sounding like those two cats during their individual eras..., I mean, since you're bringing race into it. I was just wondering why everyone is so gaga over Willis. Also, Jeff Berlin was included on my list. He white, ain't he? You f@cking doofus.
