Well, I have to correct some statements Gary made regarding Canon DSLRs flash photography initial settings. Number one is E-TTL is far from perfect and usually inconsistent depending from the flash metering area the camera is pointed on. That's why if I shoot inside my home studio and the lightening is not changing, I use my flash on Manual only and control the flash power output manually plus my camera is on the Manual mode too. If I use E-TTL and I am in changing light events, I use FEC very frequently as it's very easy with my Canon 6D using Q (quick control ) button. I have noticed that E-TTL tends to underexpose if FEC is set to 0, so I usually add from +1/3 to + 11/3 stops. Second, even the latest DSLRs (4 to 5 years model years ago) have good high ISO performance, I still would use the lowest possible ISO I can in given ambient environment. Plus I usually keep my background at least 1 stop underexposed so let flash to expose the subject normally. I never go above ISO 400 or even less keeping my images tack sharp without any noise. Most of the time I set the ISO to 200 if ambient is not really dim. Without flash, I use Auto ISO and let my camera to set proper ISO while I concentrate on creative Aperture and Shutter Speed.

I have to inform you that in Picture Style the first column is not Saturation as you say but Sharpness. Saturation is the third column with the three circles. If you went into "INFO:Detail set." at the bottom of the screen where you can then change the settings it clearly shows you that Sharpness comes first! Even in the screen for Picture Style it clearly shows Monochrome as having no digits in the last two columns but 3 in the Sharpness. If it were 3 in the Saturation (your first) column it would be a funny black and white photo! Therefore your information is entirely incorrect regarding Picture Style! 875,615 viewers mislead.

It actually is. You can use a reduced-contrast user preset to show you on the LCD what data you are capturing in the shadows & highlights. This info would otherwise only be visible in the RAW editor.

in setting up the speedlite flash do you set up the focal distance on the flash or does it sync with the setting on the camera. also the flash compensation is this also set up on the flash unit or is it done on the flash comp. on the camera?If a picture comes out too dark or light using the flash.. Great video but you should specify that these settings are for people that don't shoot RAW and for the in camera image preview in the screen. When you shoot RAW none of these settings matter bacause e.g. Adobe Lightroom will default to Adobe Standard or Adobe Standard v2 Color Space and not sRGB nor Adobe RGB aka Adobe RGB 1998. When you export the RAW files to jpeg is when you can choose the Color Space that you desire, sRGB, Display P3, Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB and even choose your printers own profile by selecting OTHER. As for picture Styles the same goes, Lightroom will default to the Picture Profile taken at the time, but you can change to any Profile available for your camera and obviously adjust/change Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation, and Color Tone Levels before exporting to a compressed file like JPEG or TIFF in which the Color Profile will be embedded to the file :-) RAW is uncompressed and none of these setting will affect your editing options

Hi Gary, you started talking about the Menù settings, promised us to talk about White balance later, started talking about Color space, but changed the explaination midway thru, talked about Picture style in a good way, but then started talking about the Flash... quite a desordered Menù settings explaination!

You're keep saying set the flash to TTL mode but it shows ETTL on your flash.

You showed the (partial) metering mode and called it (center-weighted). other than that, good video.

by the way, that 3 on the "saturation" it is not saturation, it is sharpness.

Absolutely wrong with spot metering. Always use spot metering when shooting manual. Use center weighted when shooting any of the assisted modes. Sorry Chuck.

I heard that picture styles only effects the jpeg not the raw images is this true

Can you help. I did a clear setting ( and not a clear custom setting) on my 2,canon10D and on 2, Canon D5 mk 1,now all the blue and green are over exposed and washed out on the camera screen not as bad on the laptop. I have never had this problem before. Please can you help....Karl...………..

well..forgot to mention that sRGB/AdobeRGB are connected directly to the RAW File. Large/Medium/Small&Picture Stye is only related to the JPEG or what camera will show you in the Preview..its just camera processing the original RAW.!.Spot metering ...well it depends how you use it ..multiple Focus points with spot metering does not make any sense...cener point Focus & Spot metering can work pretty good for portrait photo..(and you never focus on the shirt..always the eyes/face)

As far as the Info you gave in Picture Style...It is incorrect.. Color, Contrast ect ... can be corrected in Adobe Photoshop in the editing process...The only problem I have as a Pro is Over exposed photos..It is Hard to Impossible to regain an image in the editing process... Over expose is when you allow too much light into the camera...

in white balance he must be talking about JPGS .......my understanding is that with RAW, you can reassign what ever white balance you want in post production . Then again this is a 2010 video.

All Canon Picture Style is trash include the Faithful. I use my own Picture Style... Sharpness AllWayDown, Contrast AllWayDown, Saturation AllWayDown +1, ColorTone AllWayDown +2. It shows the most accurate color with the real life. Try it for urself.
