An attempt at a twisted farriers rasp knife that was inspired after I saw one by @reforgedrelics on instagram.
This is a pretty much warts and all account of how I got on. As it's just for my personal use I'm pretty pleased with the results.

I am impressed with the precision hammer work ( not that I'm surprised at all, a farrier will always own the shaping over the anvil ) Nice to see you are improving after the op. I had surgery on my spine a while ago and I'm still finding problems with swinging a hammer. I've asked a 'horsey' relative to source a knackered rasp for me from a farrier they know so I can try to emulate your kitchen knife projects. If I even get close to your attempt from years ago I will be very happy. Thank you sir. Your uploads are inspirational and aspirational.

It’s good to see you back pounding on the steel again. I really like the knife, looks like a good comfortable handle. Also has the cool look. If you have hooks in your kitchen, it might work nicely with the tang…

Now you have the room, how about that power hammer? Could even build your own, I've always liked the big, multi-episode projects.

The only one I think I could build would be the Joshua de lisle one but I would need a bigger compressor to run it so more expense. I’m toying with a press instead, I just need to weigh up the pros and cons of each.
@serendipityforge333
@serendipityforge333 2 жыл бұрын
@@garyhuston check out the Clay Spencer Tire Hammer. No compressor needed. Plans are available and it’s built of mostly reclaimed materials. I have in and it’ll work up to one inch stock pretty well. I’ve used mine for years with no complaints. Though, I will admit, a press will just do some things quicker and more efficiently.

Personally I think when forging the blade out you're putting more of yourself into it. So the blade is actually a part of you. If that makes any sense. Nice work!! I've yet to see someone do this type of twisted handle. I rather like it. Thank You Sir for your time and efforts to show this.

I'm not saying I disagree with you, but (to use the total opposite end of the spectrum as an example) you can put equally as much of your character into a knife with the toolpaths you program. Not that there's any benefit to starting this discussion and any dog I have in the fight is tangential at best, I just think the capability to inject one's own personality in the product starts and finishes with the maker themselves. Their process ultimately has little bearing on their ability to do so, in my experience.

That came out very nice! Have you ever been tempted to have a gas forge in the shop as well Gary? These days I find the only time I fire up my coke forge is when it is to work on something that wont fit in the gas forge.

The gas is so much more expensive than the coke!
@jackdawg4579
@jackdawg4579 2 жыл бұрын
@@garyhuston it is different here in Australia, gas isn't cheap, but coke is quite hard to get, and usually isn't in a size suited to forging, you have to break it up yourself to manageable size.

Don’t feel bad. Farriers need good sharp tools, and rasps get replaced regularly, even though they seem sharp to us, to a good farrier, they are uselessly dull. I knew a farrier who replaces his rasp every 10 horses. He gave me a huge stack of ‘dull’ rasps to use for projects like this. They all seem nearly new to me, but to him, they are dull and make the job harder and take longer.

The only issue I see with this design is food particles getting in between the twists, I would almost fill the handle with epoxy
