Ya don't shoot someone just because they are coughing a lot. I've seen people cough worse than that from a good hit of weed in college, and as slow and painful of a death that some mustard or chlorine gas victims may have had, I think statistically speaking, most who became casualties due to it did end up surviving in the long run and are probably grateful they were not mercy killed.

@@14arma Correct. Only 3% of gas attack victims died. Gas attacks in general where very ineffective in WW1. Mustard gas was a turning point, cause it targeted the whole body. Cause of mustard gas not being a gas, but a hydrophobic liquid it could be used to contaminate areas for weeks. There even touching the wrong surface could be enough to become a gas victim. If you look at the casualty numbers you see a sharp rise in gas victims after mustard gas started being used on the battlefields.

In the book, the boy was shot at his ass, seriouslly wounded, so they almost shot him for mercy. The movie used gas only for drama Also, in the book, the main character was send to home to recover after gulp some gas.

Ben Swaine not really. It was chlorine gas and he came out of it fairly quickly. I would say 2 weeks at the hospital and he would be able to go back to the front of his lung tissue weren’t too damaged.
