Last time I was at a dealer I peaked into to the service area and saw 5 diesels with their cabs lifted up/off. That spoke volumes about the difficulty in servicing and repairs. Keeping my ‘11 F150 V8 for now.

Ask me about my 2020 F250 Lariat 4x4 Tremor 6.7L Diesel. At 6 months old, 7,500 miles, it simply stopped working. Fuel pump ate itself and sent shrapnel through my engine. Took my local Ford dealer 4 weeks to identify the problem (which is amazing to me given that fuel pump issues have been the subject of class action lawsuits for nearly 10 years) and they're still waiting on the "Contamination kit" which is a bundle of parts that will replace the entire fuel delivery system of my truck. (I'm told parts are backordered.). So my BRAND NEW, $70,000+ truck has been at the dealer for 6 weeks (as of tomorrow) with no ETA known on parts. Even after the fuel delivery system is replaced, I'll have a truck that's had metal shavings pumped through the engine due to a part that Ford knew was faulty. Very bummed, and thinking about going back to a gas burner. (For the record, every major US manufacturer uses the same faulty fuel pump (a Bosch CP4) on Diesel engines, and just about each manufacturer has been sued.

For you this is a good choice. For the guy making the video, so long as he sells once his warranty is up, he made the better choice with the diesel. In 125k miles he probably won't use the warranty, but is at least covered if he does need it. Anything over 100k without warranty can be a money pit nightmare in a hurry with diesels nowadays. Own then under warranty. The people that own them out of warranty will be truck broke

A guy named Mali mish who has a travel channel chose gas vs diesel when he bought his F250 with a camper for his family of 5 living full time on the road in mexico. He said diesel needs DEF and it simplybisnt always available in Mexico. Gas was available everywhere in. North America. Of course he is a traveler who goes outside the USA. Just another note to consider.

I used to work for a Ford Dealer. By my estimate, 90% of people who bought F-250's & F-350's were folks who had a 1/2 ton truck then got a bigger boat or trailer. They then had a new truck (and a trailer) payment. When I bought my F-350 (Diesel) it cost about $500 more than an F-250. I later got a bigger trailer without concern or additional cost. I'm a regular guy who can only afford one upgrade at a time...for me an F-350 was the way to go.

We went from a gas 1500 to a diesel 2500 and am very satisfied. One thing that makes a big difference for us is that standard fuel islands are challenging with a setup that is 55+ feet long. With the diesel we can use the truck stops with lots of room to maneuver. Just an added benefit for some.

Went from 2017 3.5 Eco with max tow to a 2016 F350 6.7diesel. Pull our 2018 Imagine 2800BH and absolutely love it. Just got back from the Smokies and the 6.7 didn't miss a beat even getting into some of the stronger winds from the recent hurricane. Best towing decision I've made. Went with F350 in preparation of 5th wheel. Enjoyed the video.

It takes at least 300k miles for a diesel to break even with a gas truck when you break it down financially. Buy a diesel if you tow all the time. Waste your money if you don't.

I purchased a '19 F350 w/6.2 gas engine running through the 4.30 axle that allows me 22k lbs. GCWR (I tow a 41', 16k lb horse trailer w/ living quarters). I previously towed this trailer with my old 7.3 F350 without issue but did not want the additional costs of ownership of the newer diesels with some fairly well documented issues with the 6.7 diesel problems; I chose the gas engine to avoid any diesel-related issues. Comparisons of my very reliable 7.3 (owned 20 years, bought in '99 new): 20mpg unloaded, 11 to 12mpg towing my trailer. The new 6.2: 14mpg unloaded, 8mpg towing. The fuel costs are a wash in my area - there is a $0.60 to $0.70 difference per gallon between gas and diesel thus no real appreciable difference in fuel cost towing. Power when towing up 6 to 7 degree grades between the two engines: less shifting in the diesel (a 6mt) but the auto in the 6.2 does very well albeit at a somewhat higher rpm (diesel torque was 500 lb-ft over a fairly large rpm band, the gas engine torque is 430 lb-ft over a more narrow band around 3800 rpm and has 150 more hp) and seems to pull with somewhat less effort. There was no exhaust brake on my old diesel - lots of wheel braking down hill but the 6.2 auto is surprisingly good at downshifting to engine brake decelerating 11 tons total on the downgrade. Agree that the newer diesels have even more torque and power but I have no problems at all with what the 6.2 can accomplish and do not need to look forward to clogged EGR coolers, radiator leaks, turbo issues, etc. down the road regardless of warranty coverage. As with anything YMMV but the Wandering Weekends guy is happy with his and I am very happy with mine as well. Good video, good discussion.

I found your channel as I was looking at options to go from my 2017 Silverado 1500 Z71. It pulled our 28' bumper pull with no problems, but had many "white knuckle" moments. I was on the fence of a F250 or Chevy 2500HD. I like you "wanted" a diesel, but I knew I needed a 3/4 ton. The Boss; AKA the wife, said don't come home in a gas. I couldn't say no to the 2019 discounts, needless to say, I absolutely love the fact I went with a diesel. Never Forget.

Very well said I recently went through the same change in trucks. I had a 14 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi and moved to a 18 2500 6.7 Cummins. We pull a 34’ Jayco Jayflight like you I will say the 6.4 never let me down one time. For me the diesel has always been a want and I went into it with very high expectations, and yes there is little comparison when it comes to pulling hills but it is a lot of cost when the other option does just fine. I am very happy with my choice but would never say it is a MUST.

A very well balanced and accurate information video in gas vs. diesel. You likely saw some of my responses on some of your other videos as I have a 2020 Chevy 6.6L gasser. When I hear you paid as low as a gasoline truck as you did with that 6.7L diesel plus all that warranty, what a great deal 👍🏼. As well, as your real world numbers show, it supports why you log your newer 7.3 Godzilla and why I love my Chevy 6.6L gas unit. Take care from Alberta.

Agree. I only purchased Premium Unleaded with my 2018 F150 with 3.5 EB...and now that I have upgraded to a 2019 F250 6.7 Diesel, my fuel costs have gone down by 40 cents...and my avg mpg stayed nearly the same. I get just got 20.4 mpg highway with the 6.7 Diesel and on the 3.5 EB the most I ever got was 22.3 mpg when using the Eco Mode option. But regular mode driving with the 3.5 EB was around 20.5 mpg. Avg daily driving around town for both the 3.5 EB and the 6.7 Diesel are pretty much the same as well....approx. 17.5 mpg.

Good honest review. To many viewers watching, this is only applicable to 3/4 or 1ton trucks. Half ton diesels don't have the same power advantage as the HD. Half ton diesels are a bit of a slug especially when loaded since theyre designed for mpg.

Thanks for a great video! Great realistic insight for someone on the fence. For my application, there's no significant financial advantage either way due to 20% average differential between gas/diesel in my part of the country. I want diesel simply for that relaxed feeling the low RPM torque diesel provides. My only hangup with diesel is a big one; I hunt and fish a lot and I can spend more than 10 days cruising rough dirt roads along the river/forest areas in the mountains, 1-2 miles at a time. Just the kind of usage you really don't want for diesel with EGR and DPF as regen cycles become a real issue. No highways for miles. For that reason, I'm waiting for the 7.3L unless a great deal on a 6.2 comes along. Again, great video!

The new 7.3L Ford Gas Engine has very diesel like characteristics and you know if you need service it can be taken to any shop without hassle. I’m a diesel fan as I drove trucks for about 12 years after leaving the Military. I’m not a big Cummins fan as I had 2 of them crater at low mileage and at low rpm with no signs that they had any problems. It’s a shame that politics forced Cat to leave the truck engine market as they are the King of diesel power. From what I’ve seen researching all 3 manufacturers, the engines are all designed for 100K service life! WTF? A diesel should be good for 500K at a MINIMUM! That being said, I believe everyone should buy and drive what they like.😎

Fantastic video, thanks. I jumped from a 1/2 ton straight to a 250 diesel (2015), and have always wondered about the difference between my truck and a gas version. Definitely a want on my part, live in a fairly flat part of the country, and don't 'need' but like to have that assurance of the exhaust brake. Plus we must drive similarly, my MPG is similar, so interesting to see the differences in annual costs you've seen...makes me feel a little better about the added annual maintenance costs I've seen. Great stuff, keep it up.

Excellent presentation, logical and well thought-out. I went through the same mental gymnastics several years ago and decided the 2015 6.2 gasser F-250 short bed SRW in Platinum trim was for me. I drive relatively few miles annually (< 3,000 miles), and tow an equipment trailer with a Kubota tractor (8500 lbs. total weight) perhaps 15% of the time. The 6.2 is more than adequate for all the reasons you allude to, and it has proven reliability. The upcharge for the diesel engine and higher maintenance (and potential higher repair costs) just weren't justified in my particular driving circumstance, but each owner must evaluate their needs and priorities for themselves, as you have done. You have a beautiful truck and should be justifiably proud of it. Happy trails!

You will absolutely love the diesel in the high mountains like the Rockies and the Bighorns where the passes are 9000’-13000’ passes. That is why we got the diesel. Our Tundra was more than capable, but when you tow a camper over the Bear Tooth pass, the tundra would have burnt through two tanks of gas and the diesel just ran and ran.

Most of the time I find just letting the weight of my foot down on the pedal to be too much. My favorite place to just flat out floor it is a highway on ramp, get up to the speed of traffic well before you have to try and merge!

It is easy for me to relate, because I did exactly the same thing last year and ironically ended up with exactly the same truck as you! Totally concur with everything you said. I’ve been a auto technician in the car business for almost 40 years and gas is the way to go unless you are towing for a living. Gas trucks last way longer and have more power than in the past. If fuel mileage is a concern just think about how much gasoline you can buy for 10k. Depreciation is the same , if you start off lower then you end lower but percentage wise it’s the same. If you need more power then you have a lot of aftermarket choices to supercharger your gas engine and make way more power.

So TRUE. The longer you have it the more you appreciate the diesel. I recently purchased a used 2016 Ford F250 (Lariat trim) with 55,000 miles for far less than a new 2019. Glad I went from my 2017 F150 (XLT trim) to this truck. What a difference in pulling our TT. We live in Houston, TX area and we do not plan on off-roading so the non-4-wheel drive was best for us and we gain a few hundred pounds towing capacity no being 4-wheel drive. Yes maintenance is higher on the diesel but if you do your own basic work (oil changes, fuel filter changes, etc.) it's not too bad. Can't say enough about this diesel. It's just great. The 3/4 ton SWD coupled with our Hensley hitch, can't beat it. As a result of this new to us truck, we purchased a new TT. Our new TT is 38' with three slides. We took a 6 week trip to Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota and boy was this combination great. Great video too by the way.

I can change oil in my F-450 for $80 my 6.2 gas is $26. It doesn’t get the fuel mileage my diesel gets but gas is cheaper so it balances out I believe. Gas will get you there no problem. Diesel will get you there faster with less grunt. Bottom line. Buy what you can afford and what you will be happy with

It's funny that the best truck is always the one you just bought lol... generally speaking of course. Before I bought my eco boost I drove the other makes and models and I really liked them all. Modern trucks are crazy good especially all the towing features they now have so 6 of 1, half dozen the other. We will be towing a 31 ft travel trailer to move out west but once we get settled we will downsize to 25 ft so the 3.5 is more than enough. We towed the 31 ft 1,200 miles so far (over the Appalachians) no problem at all.

I recently upgraded from a 1/2 ton (2018 Ford F150 Lariat with 3.5 EB) to 3/4 ton (2019 F250 Platinum 6.7 Diesel) about 2 months ago. As you stated, the rebates for the 2019 F250 were super. I haven't had a chance to tow my 2020 GD Reflection 297RSTS yet (TT 29' or 33'11" tongue to tail), but am looking forward to it. Covid-19 and my mom's passing put a damper in our plans. So far a really love the F250 Diesel. So much more torque and power. The 3.5 EB was no slouch though... had no problem towing and it certainly pulled the mountains in AR, NM, and AZ (5K miles total trip) without any issues. Going downhill with 10K lbs pushing you was a little unnerving, but the worst part of towing 10K lbs with the 1/2 ton was the wind and trucks. No sway, but I just felt like the little 1/2 ton F150 was getting pushed around way too much. So I'm really looking forward to towing with the 3/4 ton Diesel. Good friends that went from gas to Diesel have indicated it is a night and day difference. So I'm hoping my experience will be the same. As for the "Cool Factor", I felt the 2018 F150 Lariat was pretty cool, especially with the 3.5 EB. With the Twin Turbo's, it would definitely sit you back in the seat when you stepped on the gas. But the "Cool Factor" of the 2019 Ford F250 Platinum Diesel is SO MUCH better!!! So I feel "Way Cooler"!!!. LOL

Great video! I really enjoyed listening to your perspective on these issues. I am pulling a Rockwood 2706WS that sounds like is the same size as your trailer. I tow it with a 2019 4 wheel drive Silverado 1500 that has a 6” lift with 35” tires. I had the truck before the trailer and wasn’t educated about all the weight factors when I bought my trailer. Although it’s within the truck capacity and capabilities it’s not a pleasant time towing this trailer. I’m looking at f-250’s now and struggling with engine choice but after your video I think I’m going to stay with gasoline unless I come across a smoking deal on a new diesel. Thanks for the informative video.

I have a half ton gasser, pulling a 30 ft TT. I like the idea of the exhaust braking but another plus for diesel for me would be being able to go through the trucklane at truck stops. Right now we use Google maps to see if there is enough room to maneuver but we often get there to find vehicles blocking us out (or worse -blocking us in after we pull into the one set of pumps we can manage!).

My 6.2 gets about 14.3 mpg mixed city and highway daily. My diesel got about 16, and the mpgs really plummeted in the city, more so than the V8 gas. If I weren’t towing or highway traveling much, I wouldn’t get a diesel, mainly because the egr and emissions crap, too expensive if you’re just an occasional hauler.

He is spot on with the needs vs wants statement. With a difference of roughly $9,000 dollars in purchase cost you can set that aside and have a rebuilt, or new engine, dropped in later if you need it. Granted the diesel should go much farther before a rebuild is needed but I have seen gasers go 300,000 miles before they died. I remember my 1979 Pontiac "Smoke and the Bandit" Edition Trans Am making 220 HP from a 6.6 liter TA Pontiac engine and when I bought it in '83 that was amazing.

I managed to find a 2019 F350 Lariat SRW diesel in the 6ft vs 8 ft bed and upgraded. My F350 payload is 3525 lbs. We pull a 7400 lb grand design travel trailer but may eventually get a mid size 5th wheel in a few years. The price was not much different between the 250 and 350.

In my business I purchased two F-250 6 L diesels and had no problems running up and down the interstate working in the oil fields. Did not pull a lot of weight and they had a ton of power. What I did not like about the new model was the fact that I could not buy the oil and fuel filters from any local auto parts store and that made the oil changes expensive ($100 in 2004). When I bought the second one you could buy the filters and change your own oil of which I like to do.

Very fair comparison and it matches my experience. HAD a 2016 F-250 with 6.2. It actually towed great in Oregon where basic speed is 55 mph. We could average 8.0 mpg towing our 5th wheel (except in the mountains). Terrible in Idaho with 65 basic speed (even higher mph on freeways). Averaged 6.0 mpg towing. I traded for a 2019 F-350 with the 6.7 Powerstroke and as you say "I got what I expected". Very happy with the upgrade so far, especially with the lack of the stress I feel compared with the 6.2 with the constant shifting of gears while trying to maintain speed on rolling terrain. If I had cruise set, the transmission would shift from 6th gear all the way to 2nd trying to maintain 55 mph. New subscriber!

@Pilot545
@Pilot545 4 жыл бұрын
I think I prob would have made the same decision. My biggest issue with the diesel is that upfront cost. You can get a LOT of options by sticking with a gasser for that nearly $10K. Once that cost is taken out of the equation, I think diesel would be the easy choice. Great vid and good choice! (FYI: I have a ‘18 F150 and tow a 32’ Jayco. I understand its limitations and am envious of you but I enjoy the daily drivability of the half ton...plus, we tow mostly in FL BUT I can def see an F250 in our future...only because I WANT one). DEF very interesting about Ford’s new payload definition. And great explanation on wants vs needs. MANY MANY people confuse the two! And damn, what a down to earth and genuine guy you seem! Hope our paths cross one day out camping if you’re ever down near Melbourne, FL.

pujdo moj For most people, the upfront cost is what matters most. Besides, you aren’t going to recoup the full $10k-ish on resale anyway. At BEST you will break even. So, no, I don’t think most people are thinking resale when trying to deal on a $60-80k truck. They want the best deal possible to get it in their driveway.

I drive my 2016 F250 15k miles a year with 2000 miles towing travel trailer. my numbers differ, 16mpg commuting, 11-11.5 mountain towing. fuel filter, $56.50 on amazon change it myself, change every 15K. Oil changes at dealer every 7.5k, $89 each change. hard to beat that price so don't do it myself. DEF, DIY. wish i had your fuel cost. in Phx AZ, it has been hovering around $3/gal. The diesel makes sense for me where I tow. Arizona and the west is mountainous. I tow 8000lb payload at elevations from 1230ft (home) to 9200ft (camping in the White Mtns). Its up one mountain 3500ft and down then the next range 4500, then the Mogollon Rim6000ft, then the White mountains 7-10k ft. What happens at altitude, is that an engine cannot make as much torque and horsepower. that additional torque/horsepower makes the difference, doesnt suffer even at 9000 ft. with my payload, I can easily forget i am even towing my 30ft, 7500lb trailer with cargo in the bed. BTW, I have the 50gal Titan Fuel Tank. Weight of the truck makes towing a breeze. If I was a flatlander, gas engine would be sufficient.

Very good comparison. I love that you found and shared the Easter egg information. I am a Cummins guy and currently have my third Cummins pickup (2018). Every model was better than the last. We looked hard at the Ford in 2018 when we bought and loved some of the features, but decided the Ram fit our desires and needs better. It is a personal choice. You hit it right on with your comparisons. One thing which I will add is life expectancy and resale of diesel over gas. I wouldn’t make a choice solely on this but it is one more factor. Keep making honest videos. PS I also have bought and run class 8 trucks and have always been a diesel fan even before the diesel pickups came along.

I have been pulling heavy stock and horse trailers since the '70s! I learned three things favoring diesels! One, they get better fuel mileage! Two, a lot of towing usually requires valve jobs on gas engines because of the increased combustion chamber temperatures! Under load, the combustion chamber temps on a diesel are much lower! Three, properly maintained diesels are good for multiple hundreds of thousand miles without overhaul. These are the reasons over road big rigs are ALL diesel! If one seldom tows gas is probably the best way to go. But if towing any weight at all is the norm, diesels are best! My current diesel has over 285,000 reliable miles on it, well over half of that has been pulling from 3 to 6 tons all over the nation! My last gas powered truck needed a valve job at 38,000 miles!.

2022 would like to have a word... ;) For towing our trailer, we needed to upgrade our 2016 F150 to a F350 in Spring 2022. Every Ford dealer wanted $15,000 over MSRP and you had to take whatever the dealer got in, no negotiations, no choosing your options or add-ons. Some dealers had nothing at all to sell for F250-F450, except for customer orders arriving 8-12mos after ordering, and if the customer didn't want it then that's what they could sell. Ford stopped taking orders months ago, and dealers told me they are hoping ordering opens back up in August 2022. Dealer and others online said the same long game happened in 2021. "Rebates" are non-existent ever since chip shortages got worse in the past 3-4 years, and then covid + lockdowns hit supply chains for the past 2yrs. You are lucky to have bought before these crazy truck buying times hit.

The previous owner got like 11.5 and idled it all day long (like 1500 idle hours on a truck with 90k miles!). I agree with you on the towing mpg though lol. It's like 8-9 mpg all the time. My dad has the 2015 f250 with the diesel. Same truck configuration. He get's like 17-18 mpg. But the 6.7 has so much more power but it looks like a pain to work on anything under the hood when you have the 2 trucks side by side. You can see the ground looking at the engine in the 6.2! A really informative video, thanks. We are about a year away from trailer and truck purchase. Our plan is to have the truck less than 10 years. Those will be spent with several months of towing each year throughout North America. I know one can’t predict the future but at this time is the increased upfront purchase cost of the diesel offset typically by a higher resale value than the gas truck. All things like condition and mileage, options being equal. Thanks.

At least you were able to maintain your speed and that is the biggest thing. I've driven up more than on mountain pass a 35 to 40 mph with 80,000 gross load of lumber..

Gas has to down shift multiple times up and down constantly diesel most of time can power thru it way easier semi just puts it in his hill powering gear and let the torque power him up engine/exhaust brake down which I love about a diesel not having to pump brakes/hold brakes on a hill life saver man.....

Wait a minute that's defining 'Cargo weight rating' not actual Payload. I'm not sure about that I'll have to look into it

Sounds like a good deal for a new one because they won't be discounting the new 7.3s for a while. Odds are this time next year the 7.3 will have normal discounts like the rest on the models.
