35 cfh through a 6 cup? Maybe 15-20? Having the same gas flow through two wildly different cup sizes is no equal comparison!
@VictorMPR

I thought the same. Maybe if he used a #6 cup on a gas lens to match the #6 with diffuser would have been a better comparison.

I came here to ask this. No way he’s flowing 35 cfh through a 6? I can’t imagine the weld would look as nice flowing so much turbulent gas through a six?

Great video. My pick that I use is a standard collet on non-reactive materials like ally, and a gas lens for mild steel, Chromoly steel and stainless steel, the big advantage with the gas lens is stickout for reaching harder to get at spots

Virtually never welded in my life, just bought a Unimig viper 195 here in Aus & first sampled with some stainless welds & with clear cup & gas lens i got some beautiful colours & great results considering a first timer, technology is always changing, sure there are those who will stick to what they know after many moons of welding their style but gas lenses i see are a vast improvement. Just saying! Great vids as always thanks bro 😎

I have been tig welding for about 7 years now mostly stainless steel when i first started my company provides standard diffusers and number 5 cups on our miller stl 160's about 4 years ago i decided to buy a gas lens setup to try and the change in qaulity of welds i laid amazed me so i now provide them for my crew and i use them at home as well on my projects with stainless steel mild steel and aluminum

The setup I use is a stubby gas lens with a Jazzy 12 cup with 12 litres per min gas flow and I get great results on stainless, my machine is an Everlast 210EXT.

You could go with less argon.. ive experimented and ive been able to weld my 12 with as little as 3l per minute.. obviusly not outside corners.. but i never run more than 12l per min and i ussally use a size 25 glass cup...

All my work is now through a gas lens. I have been TIG welding for 30 years and only in the last two changed to a Furick gas lens setup. I weld all materials including Aluminium. Love your videos dude

Do you notice a benefit to a gas lens setup with alu? I've heard so many people say stay away from a lens on alu. The only answer I've heard as to why was because "it's not necessary". But I've never heard anything more in depth as to why. I've spent years watching Jody on KZfaq like everyone else. And he's always said there's no need. I'm more interested in if there's a BENEFIT that's noticeable

I use a diffuser, but that's mainly because I do general welding on ali, steel, stainless and cast iron. When I do Stainless its usually for an exhaust where access is important and the smaller diameter diffuser helps that over a honking great gas lens.

Welding is a process that if you get enough weld material on you can grind it off to make the joint presentable......that's my way and it works..........I use a plasma welder mostly and tig for odd jobs..

Love watching your videos! BUT, I think we have some parts definition problems here. I believe you are calling a "collet body" a "diffuser". A "diffuser" is the screen piece in the large glass cups. The piece with the "gas holes" is a "collet body". The "gas lens" is the piece that replaces the "collet body" that has the diffuser screens built in.

I use a 10 or 12 on stainless, a 10 or 8 on steel and I switch between a short standard 5 and a gas lens 5 or 6 for Aluminium. Most are from a big Furick kit I bought with my welder but the small gas lenses are just cheap glass 5 and 6 from somewhere but I really like them.

I take the gas defuser and drilled .040 diameter holes in between the existing holes and found the gas flow to be similar to using a gas lens without the cost of the gas lens defuser and the gas lens cup. It's about slowing down the gas existing the defuser to steady the flow of gas surrounding the weld puddle. There is still enough crossection of the defuser to conduct the current in the defuser to the tungsten. I use a #6 nozzle and 3/32 2% thoriated tungsten. Preflow and postflow are the same. I use gas lens when I’ve got lots of room, but will use diffusers when in tight spaces or in the field. Diffusers are pretty durable and less expensive.

One of the best uses of a gas lens is they afford a much longer stick out of tungsten for those hard to reach areas. Almost an inch in some setups.

Where i work they just got me a new inverter welder with gas lens gun. The old transformer welder had a diffuser gun setup. For the junk i weld they both work fine except some of the junk i have to ' repair ' requires going over welds made by plasma welding machines and going over those welds they ' pop ' and ' spit ' and gunk up my electrodes real fast and on the new gas lens gun it gunks up the little screen. Not all tig welders get to make nice pretty dime stacks all day. Some of us have to use a nice pretty machine and all the talent we can muster to weld crappy material that makes us look like we cant weld in the first place. Life in the real world.

I do most my tig work in my shop, so i naturally use a lens.. i learned on diffusors and bought a pack of stubby gas lens ceramic cups on ebay for like 20€.. tried them and im never going back. I have a huge 25 glass cup for most my tig stuff, and will only use smaller stuff when i need to, i can weld 1mm stainless without any discoloration on an outside corner... that is impossible with a Diffusor.

I do environmental work for a living... I'm licensed and under a full medical surveillance program... That half face respirator is a standard HEPA that is rated for dust and debris... You want a Organic Vapor Cartridge... you always give great information... Please pass this information on so people don't see that your wearing a standard P100 half face and think that it's safe, because it's not...
@dack42
@dack42 7 ай бұрын
What organic vapors would be present here? My understanding is that P100 filters are standard practice for welders, and particulates are the primary hazard. I would expect metal particulates, but I don't see any source for organic vapors when it's all clean metal. Ozone should also be minimal, since the arc is shielded with argon.

Gas lens means far higher gas consumption, and less penetration on most welds. Good for pretty looking social media welds, but not a great idea for any sort of serious AL welding.
