Heard this story on JJJ the other day and thought ‘What utter rubbish, we don’t have a gas shortage we have a political will shortage’.

I saw this reported on the ABC and couldn't believe the obvious lies were not challenged. We should have a competitive advantage with cheap gas but instead we let multinationals walk all over us. Well done Westy for reporting on this

Worked in the drilling industry years back out in remote OZ. Trust me there is no gas shortage, only the shortage of braincells in Canberra.

If only we had politicians with a backbone to start governing for the citizens instead of their benefactors.

How come my Japanese mother-in-law pays about approx. 1/3rd retail price for ‘Aussie’ gas in Tokyo than we get charged here in Melbourne ?

There was supposed to be a gas shortage in the 80s. 40 years on, still pumping strong. Heard this all before and multiple times.

No. The idea of a 10% reserve is a waste of time. The fossil fuel cartel doesn't pay tax. Doesn't 'care' about the people that actually owns the in ground assets, the Australian people. So the easiest and quickest way to sort the issue? Nationalise ALL in ground assets, be it gas, oil mineral ore, uranium or gold. Then the government sets a true price and a lower GROSS earnings tax. Norway owns their assets and when the companies complained, the Norwegian government said, we'll you can go somewhere else if you like! Interestingly enough the companies DIDN'T. go somewhere else, they paid their dues. In gas alone, they have paid around $78 million u.s. a year. Australia should be doing the same. And when the IPA complains then they too need to be exposed as nothing more than the owners and controllers of the Liberal party and Rinehart is a major 'contributor'.

In WA Alan Carpenter was the premier who stared down the gas giants and told them that they could not drill unless they set aside 10% for the local market. They walked away, saying that it was unprofitable. The next day they came back and said that they'd had a look and it turned out they could sell 10% locally and still make a dollar. Alan Carpenter lost the next election, but thankfully his policy stayed.

Politicians aren't ignorant, they're complicit.

A nationwide gas reservation policy will prevent any shortages. Not a single cubic centimetre of gas should leave these shores until domestic demand is met. But of course our political masters are too gutless to do this. That's why we're playing these silly games.
