There are a lot of misinformed comments here. I'm a diesel mechanic...BUT...I bought the Gasoline engine. Before making judgments try taking one for a test drive. Drive it up hills and on the freeway and around town. Take it on backroads and curvy roads. TEST DRIVE IT! The Gas's 9spd trans is a masterpiece. It shifts like BUTT'A. Look at the Sprinter specs...both Gas and Diesel each have 188HP. Yes the Diesel has more torque...but I'm not going to be towing often and my trailer only weighs 1800lbs fully loaded so do I need the Diesel? NO! My fully loaded trailer is just over half the towing capacity of 5000lbs. They both have the same towing capacity unless you go for the big 3500 with HD Suspension and that will allow for a bit more...you can't get the Gasoline engine for that. Yes the Diesel gets more MPG...but you can buy a whole lot of Gasoline for $4000. The Gas Transmission has 9 speeds compared to 7spds for the Diesel...that 9spd gearbox keeps the engine in its 2500-3500 torque range more often. The gas is way better around town and is way more responsive to throttle input because the turbo is small and doesn't lag. How long will the Diesel take to start paying you back; and will you even own the vehicle that long? The Diesel is quite a bit noisier. I like Quiet. And the SMELL of Diesel I am sick of. (Did I mention I am a diesel mechanic?) If a Diesel happens to break down...(lets say your fuel pump goes out)...that fuel pump is about $600 plus $250 labor. But no no...no no no...thats not all. Any Diesel mechanic will tell you that if your pump goes out you should replace the injectors too because 9x out of ten its metal to metal inside the pump and that will contaminate the whole fuel system so injectors, pump, and a complete flush of the whole system is REQUIRED. You won't get out of the shop for less than $1500...no way!!! Now factor the cost of a new engine...what if for some reason your Diesel engine needs replacing...??? Its $15000.00 FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS. How many Gasoline engines can you buy for $15,000??? This is all hypothetical but the kicker for me is this: Open the hood on the Diesel and look at how totally crammed packed the engine compartment is...not one square inch of unused space. All you see are tubes and hoses and sensors and wire bundles and coolers and...there are TWO turbo chargers on the Diesel. Yes they have computers to diagnose but that is only as good as the tech that operates the equipment. NOW LOOK AT THE GASOLINE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. Look how easy it is to get to every thing. A diesel will cost more to have any labor done to it...plus parts are more expensive. Just saying so many comments except one on this thread are misinformed and very ignorant. With proper maintenance a gas engine will last a long long time and so that should not be an issue at all. A Diesel will too if properly maintained. But maintaining a Diesel ALSO is way way more expensive. For me anyway GASOLINE is the choice...I'm not knocking the Diesel but there ain't nothing wrong with the gas and certainly it deserves a second look esspecially if around town and stop/go is your gig. The guy who says he owns a Metris on this thread is the only legit comment. The rest are ignorant just like this video. I forgot what a fricken cruel joke Def Con is.

I pretty much agree with you on your paragraph. I have had 3 Diesel MB's and if you work on them yourself and know how to drive them; then, the Diesel is better in any kind of driving. But long term at 180K miles the Diesel gets expensive and doing your own analysis (Autel Ap200) will help to head off dealer repairs no matter where you live. Getting to know a larger Mercedes Sprinter dealer anywhere in the US is key. They either have the parts on the shelf or can get them from a local MB part warehouse. In the mountains, Smokey and out West, the Diesel is superior with a 5, 7 or 9 speed transmission. Just keep the motor in the rev range and plan your driving. Keep your eyes on the Diesel motor for signs of electronic and mechanical failures and you will enjoy what the Diesel has to offer in mpg and long life. For the average Joe the Diesel is not the one.

I'm generally a fan of diesel motors, but the emissions stuff has ruined the modern diesel in my opinion. I also went with the gas motor in my 2021 170 sprinter. As mentioned above, the 9spd tranny paired with the gas motor is excellent and it has exceeded my performance expectations. It's not gonna win any drag races, but the power is more than adequate. With the gearing and turbo, it almost feels like a diesel with the way it pulls from a stop. It's all just happening at a bit higher RPM and it's very smooth. It's amazing what all the car companies are doing with these 2.0 direct inject gas turbo motors. Gas mileage is the trade off, but it's not terrible (15-18 is what I usually see in mixed driving and I'm not putzing around).

We have a 2017 3500 Sprinter on our RV. It runs strong and can handle almost driving condition, including snow. Diesel is not difficult to find and has not been an issue. We've enjoyed the Sprinter so much that we recently purchased a 2020 2500 high top for use around the house. It can carry large loads and has no issue with high speed driving and is quiet and stable. My experience with engines goes back many years (I worked as a mechanic) and found that turbo charged gas engines require a higher octane fuel to avoid pinging and the added compression accelerates piston ring and cylinder wall wear. If the gas engine is "de-tuned" to burn regular fuel then there is a penalty factor inherent with the configuration, i.e. fuel economy drops. Diesel, by design, have a beefier engine block to handle the higher compression provides for a longer engine life. Another factor in choosing gas verses diesel is the resale value. Nobody will know how your vehicle was driven but they will know the reputation for longevity of a diesel.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!! That’s great to know your RV platform is doing so well because that’s a a lot of weight to pull. I’ve actually changed my opinion the savings as far as paying for fuel is considered will make the diesel a better option after driving for 2-3 years. Plus the longevity of it. Thanks again for your feedback!

Build is pretty typical, 1/2 ply flooring with LVP, shiplap walls, bench/table setup that converts to bed, etc. We aren't carrying a ton of water, which will keep our weight down. No plans to tow right now - but it seems like the gas is fully capable, the transmission is really great on these gas versions.

Having owned both Transits (350hd) and the 2500 long wheelbase Mercedes. The build quality is comparable in both Vans and the Transit's ride quality and driving dynamics are MUCH better, especially with the Ford's gas ecoboost engine which has substantially more horsepower and torque than any of the motors offered by Mercedes. Finally, the Transit can be fixed at ANY Ford dealer while not all Mercedes dealers service Sprinters. While I prefer the looks of the Mercedes, the Ford is still a great looking van and a much better all around value. Just my two cents!

If you look at information about the Sprinter Diesel used in business fleet service the average before major repairs for the Sprinter is 135K miles. So the Diesel in short terms is much more expensive than a gas Sprinter or a different brand of gas engine in the real world. Those who drive the Sprinter Diesel some 220K to 250K miles are drivers that know how to maintain and drive the Sprinter Diesel in all conditions. It would be luck for the average driver to break through 175K miles with the older or newer V6 Diesel Sprinter. Personal experience having had 3 Diesel and one gas vehicles from MBenz.

I’ve definitely never heard anyone consider a gas engine less complicated than diesel. I’ve also never heard of someone consider gas better for stop and go. Diesel and diesel mechanics are everywhere and needed less due to the less complicated Diesel engine. You really should do more research and not get stuck with a gasoline powered Sprinter.
@grwoolf
@grwoolf 2 жыл бұрын
While old diesels were simple, modern diesels are usually more complicated than gas. Mostly related to the emissions system that requires a regen process and DEF. Fuel systems historically have been more complex on a diesel, but direct inject gas (which the sprinter has) is getting just as complicated. None of it is rocket science, but the modern diesel DEF/Regen is a fundamentally flawed and finicky system that has resulted in big problems across multiple brands and the repairs are not cheap. They like to regen at constant highway speeds and are pretty reliable in these situations. When the van is mostly used for short trips or stop and go, it's much more likely to run into issues with the emissions systems over time. I really prefer diesels in large vehicles and I've had diesels in the past, but I went with a gas motor in my sprinter 170. I use the van too much for around-town driving. If it was all long-haul highway, I probably would have gone diesel. The performance of the gas is great even with an 8000+ lb build. I spent some time in CO this summer driving up and down passes at 10k+ feet elevation and it was great. All turbos are a huge benefit at elevation whether gas or diesel. The gas mileage is the biggest downside to gas compared to diesel from my perspective.

I can tell you don't know much about cars. The towing between the gas and diesel Mercedes is the same, the idea of the wind assist is not to lower the van but to brake against the wind. You can get the same options in a Ford as you can the Mercedes. Almost every fuel station has diesel these days. I recommend diesel if you do highway driving. Gas engines these days last almost as long as diesel engines, the advantage of diesel is fuel economy and towing. Anyone can work on a Mercedes van, diesel or gas. All mechanics have diagnostic computers to diagnose. It is a fairly standard diagnostic system. If you own a diesel take it to a diesel mechanic, any diesel mechanic worth his salt can work on a Sprinter. BTW, I own a Metris with the same 2 litre gas engine. Very good engine and transmission, very strong. I believe these gas engine should be able to go at least 300,000 KMS without major service. You won't be dissapointed, unless you decide to tow. It has plenty of power to tow but the fuel economy really drops which is what every gas engine does when towing.
