You're not supposed to put screws in that's what catches the lent only tape.

Repaired appliances for 30 years. A clogged/blocked dryer vent will usually blow the thermal fuse. I'd also spray some soap on that gas snake; especially if the dryer was moved recently. Last thing that needed to be checked was the gas valve inside the dryer which would necessitate disassembly. I've walked into many basement service calls for "Gas smell" and after checking the dryer thoroughly, I discovered a gas leak coming from the water heater or gas boiler/furnace. thanx for your videos!

NO SCREWS ON DRYER VENT! First thing ya learn when running dryer vent... some good quality Nashua foil tape and your all set. Those screws just will collect lint, not the end of the world mama but who wants to take that chance.

My dryer had a gas smell, too. I purchased a $30 electronic natural gas detector at Amazon; great purchase as I have used it to successfully find three leaks at my house that soap and water did not locate. My dryer gas smell was because the gas valve was not shutting off complete. A new valve was $100 for the part. Since the dryer was built in 1984, it was time for a new dryer.

Had that same gas smell issue with my dryer last summer, one of the ribs on the aluminum supply tubing got a tiny pinhole in it from vibrating against the back of the machine. Incredible how thin the wall of that supply tube is, one little pinhole stunk up the whole basement! No screws in vent duct, foil tape only. She’s a lint trappa mama!

Hi Steve Love your channel..... (I am an a Appliance repair tech for 20 plus years) the only thing I would add to this is ..... I have seen some appliances that were ready for the scrap heap after 20-30 years of use...I have seen others that were ready for the scrap heap the day they were built....lol....( the Hotpoint gas dryer you are working on here is in the latter category) it is literally the cheapest dryer on the market today.. The biggest problem is that the blowers are not strong enough to blow 15’’ in some cases. What we do normally is test the air flow rate at the dryer outlet, and the wall vent outlet with a vane anemometer, to see what the pressure drop is....then we clean out the dryer exhaust duct with a motorized rotary brush and lint collection vac. the general rule of thumb is 1500 feet per min. Or about 18-20 MPh is considered normal at the wall outlet on the home exterior . The dryers with the best blowers blow about 35 MPH out the back of the dryer. Some models around 30 MPH....but anything below that better be on an outside wall....in this instance it is very possible that the duct is partially blocked with lint slowing the air down ....(in some cases it can allow CO to back up into the home) In some cases a gas smell can be occur because the primary and secondary solenoid on the gas valve inside the dryer are not working properly...they both have to open up to allow for proper ignition....they often fail due to overheating , easy fix....( often its common to allow the dryer to run for 15 min to recreate the situation.....it wont to it right away) Also ....the only dryer flex vent worth anything is a product called Dryer Flex, I think its good to 690 degrees , and very flexible, in some cases hard pipe is just not feasible.... www.dryerflex.com.....and yes ....there is a building code that states “ thou shelt not install screws in the dryer vent”....it is because screws can catch lint and more importantly for me, it can damage my duct cleaning equipment when it spins around at a high rate of speed.....I did see an update on the IMC code last year, that does allow for screws, but they specified that they had to be very short....we still don’t use them....but we got to hundreds of homes built in the old days, that are full of screws....not a big deal....we clean them anyway... Oh....and thanks for all the good info on checking for high CO levels on gas stoves...I appreciate it very much, and thanks for the referral to Value Testers, they are very professional to deal with.

Steve I do full-service appliances as one of my trades. 1 get a gas sniffer. Nowadays you can buy very cheap ones from home depot. 2 elbow Ideas in that area worked. But what works really well is the 90 deg dry elbow. It will not let the machine crush the hose due to elbow keeps the gap between the wall and the machine. The aluminum flex pipe is fire-rated. And where was the smell of gas coming from? You did not check to see if the burner gas valve was seeping gas.

If you smelling gas from the dryer, it’s time for a new dryer.

After I bought my condo, I noticed my gas dryer wasn't working efficiently. Being that the dryer was new, I thought it was the long 20+ foot run of the vent tube in the concrete slab and just lived with it. Years later, I decided to snake the vent tube out in the slab foundation. A bunch of lint and a hair roller came out!

I know they make a 90 degree riser duct that connects up higher, , I would think you'd have to have that connect to some type of flexible connection, or some kind of built out cabinet with removable panels to access it maybe from the side. hard pipe the gas line in, and anchor it. I know you can use a flex connector on the gas, but I prefer the hard pipe.

Gas valve could be sticking slight open. Some soap on the burner orifice will show if it’s leaking when not running. Seen a few like this. New gas valve is the only fix there.

Screws in venting? No bueno.

If the valve is super old, it may give the rich stench. But there should be a shutoff behind the front panel. I've found many times, that blows bubbles. I've been repairing gas dryers for 10 years now, it's funny how elusive them bastards can be!

Guys the first thing you learn about installing dryer vents is, don't jack up the customers dryer because you don't know how to properly install one and make it look like crap. Damn they coulda googled that and did what you did... probably would have done it properly. Those tubes are not illegal. The TYPE that they were using is illegal. They make those so you don't have to "Jack the dryer up".... Who does this kinda work? Lemme guess 90% of your clientele are broke as hell, and probably just "want it working". Damn shame.

Wow, another reason not to trust people like this. You never find the gas leak and all you do is make sure that the gas leakage is vented to the outside. Lazy and irresponsible. Some day they may come home to a house filled with gas and when they start the dryer... Boom! No thanks for your advice. I at least find and repair the leaks as should be done!

Who is this joker gas smells almost never come from the dryer exhaust vent and almost never from blower area. I'm working on one right now and all gas input lines connections must be checked with soapy water first and then interior gas pipe and valve assy next to check for leaks. Replacing exhaust vent will do nothing for gas smells and this hack will get callback guaranteed. Also he says flexible duct tube illegal. This guy is a hack idiot and not a real repairman. Flexible exhaust tube is legal everywhere and preferred so that repairman can slide out dryer to work on it. Rigid exhaust vent will always disconnect and a pain to reconnect. Ask a real repairman.
