My ex husband right here. Funny, since I got him out of my life, nothing goes missing, everything is right where I last left it - for years. I'm not constantly being told I have a squirrel's brain (buries nuts but later cannot remember where). I don't miss that psychopath at all. This movie should be mandatory viewing in Jr. High so kids learn about manipulators early in life. Until I married him (oh so kind in the beginnimg), I could never imagine someone who got their rocks off by behaving in these sorts of petty intentional crazymaking manners. If there was no violence, I did not realise how nefarious another person could be or how their behaviour slowly chips away at your sense of self. Sadly, it's an incurable personality disorder, and the only way to put an end to it is to remove them completely from your life. Don't hesitate. The longer they fuck with your head, the more damage they will do to your psyche, self-esteem and self-confidence. 😢😢😢

I believe what he is doing, aside from just the abuse, the Germans call "schadenfreude". This is where the victim is set up. Usually a woman by a man, but it can work both ways. He does or says something to make her very excited and happy, then he pulls the rug out from under her so she is plunged into the depths of misery. When she is at her most vulnerable, he then says and does everything and anything to attack her self esteem. The point of this is to totally destroy the other person. Real sick stuff this.

I know what it feels like to end a big night out abruptly and be trotted out by an enraged husband. Early in our marriage we drove to an out of state wedding on his side of the family. We booked a room, attended the wedding, but it quickly ran downhill at the reception. He parked me at a table with his parents then scooted off to mingle with old pals. My in-laws had no wish to hold up their end of conversation. I didn't see hubby again until dinner was served. He joined us but then vanished again during coffee. Not wanting to spend the rest of the party trying to break the silence from Mr. and Mrs. Tombstone, I excused myself and relocated to a distant table. I didn't know another soul at the event but those folk were friendly and we were having pleasant chat when hubby stormed up. Somehow he reckoned that I'd embarrassed him in front of all his people. In his outrage he drove much too fast over fresh fallen snow and barely missed crashing us into a tree. For the remainder of that marriage I made sure to carry enough cash for cab fare. Keeping a commitment does not mean you cannot keep an escape route. You may need to break your word before they break your neck.

I remember parts of this original b&w version from being a teenager watching old movies till 3 or 4 am with my Mom in the 1970's. I had, however, forgotten how the ending was different from the Charkes Boyer/Ingrid Bergman version where they find the rubies sewn into her old dead Aunt's performance gown from when she was a maven in the theatre!!! This actor was much more easy to despise due to his violent portrayal of Bella's husband!!! Boyer was a lot more subtle, yet STILL despicable!!! Excellent movie, both versions!!! This older version’s characters are opposite. In the Ingrid Bergman one, her name is Paula and she is the niece of the murdered woman, and inherited the house. In this one her name is Bella and his name is Paul and he’s the one who is related to the deceased. I’m liking this version just as well. They’re both wonderful! The husband also played the director of the ballet in the Red Shoes! Marvelous actor!

The term 'gaslighting' originated from this movie, it's remake, and the Gaslight play they were based on. In those days it would've been something truly horrifying to be labelled as 'crazy', or even mentally unstable in any way as a wife, because all it took was one word from your husband and you'd be carted off to a loony bin. An overly emotional wife could be labelled as having 'female hysteria' and off you'd go...never to see the light of day in the free world again. It was a cheaper and easier option than a divorce, for a husband who no longer had any love for his wife, didn't want to pay allimony or child support, and just wanted to be rid of her. Thank God for womens' rights.

See ladies what can happen if you don't love, respect, and trust yourself first!!!
@uneqejam4 ай бұрын
So you're giving the fault to the ladies, which is what the man in this movie does also, he complained about her as well, rather that's the point.... Because then, what's the point of pretending to "stand" all this by growing muscles of your own, YOU'RE NOT A WOMAN ANYMORE, what's the point then????!!!! A woman needs to be saved in her fragility and keep her nature intact, times ago it was called "lady in distress", and men had it an honour and a sign of masculinity and True Chivalry to save one as such..... It's an evil day, people can't distinguish between right and wrong, they have lost all Peace and don't know what is Truly good for them...The tragedy is that women have become the greatest accusers of themselves and of their fellow peers, they've lost the Wisdom as to what is Good and what is Truly precious in life - you lose that, you lose yourself, and you might think you're happy, but you're NOT!!!! ✝️

I prefer this version to the later one - the other one is more expressive - this one is more crude in the play, more raw, like real life, the man more psychotic, and the woman a simpler character, which makes it more believable....Then, the whole atmosphere of that gone era - the customs, the good manners (and I stress "good" here, because there are these days those who boast of manners, but they lack the spirit, which means it's all incomplete and hypocritical), all the atmosphere gives you from the beginning a reassurance that there'll be a happy ending, that she'll find succour, like it does NOT happen today, when the victim is criminalised, and the predator excused...... ✝️ ✝️ *OUR LADY OF PONTMAIN, HAVE MERCY ON US!!!* ✝️ ✝️
