I have one that's made from cast iron, I use mine to melt lead for fishing sinkers. I burn old gas in mine, usually gas I pumped out of boats I junked or cars I scrapped that had bad fuel. On mine, the plunger has packing in it and can be tightened up as it wears. When I found it I think it had kerosene or white gas in it, there wasn't much smell. These are referred to as a 'plumber's pot' and are a product of the days when lead was melted to seal cast iron pipe joints.

We always used White Gas for lanterns in it.

White gas is unleaded gas. Which is all you can buy in the US today. I prefer to use the non-ethanol gas but I don't think it really matters.

@@jerrybaldwin2975 No, white gas is NOT unleaded gas. White gas is naptha, zippo lighter fluid, Coleman Fuel, camp fuel. Unleaded gasoline is a blend of a LOT of things like detergents, anti-knock compounds like MTBE, and other distillates that are blended differently in summer than winter. Now, will it work? Yup. Do you want to breath the combustion products from it? I don't. But if you use it outside to melt down your bullets or babbit, it'll be just fine. Some say it will gum and clog and soot and varnish and carbon and other BS. You would have to run this thing daily for a LONG time before you'd even notice a difference.

DO NOT LIGHT THIS if the pump check valve leaks. I recommend pumping it up without fuel in it and using soapy water to find any leaks. This is not like a Coleman lantern pump where the end of the pump has a tube that snakes up above the liquid to the air space on top. Nor does it have a positive shutoff pump stem like a Coleman. If it leaks, RAW FUEL WILL FILL THE PUMP AND START LEAKING OUT. This is not a good thing. Light it outside with a fire extinguisher handy. If it does leak and catch fire, don't panic, shut the valve off and use the extinguisher. The valve is sealed with a graphite packing and does NOT need to be opened all the way. A quarter turn or less it sufficient. The stem with the jet in it can be turned 180 deg to fill the priming bowl with gas then turned back to the running (up) position and then light the priming gas and close the door. Let it preheat for a minute or so and it will start spitting flames. Crack the valve open and enjoy the roar. Good luck, these things are really cool and can be very useful. Yes you can cook on them but only stuff that needs a lot of heat. These are designed at one speed, hot.

There is no built in cleaning needle. The jet is in that thing you thought was a cleaning lever. It has a steep tapered thread designed to stop in the vertical position. You can move it a bit to get the flame just right, but don't crank on it with a wrench. Just snug is fine.

Side flat ended rod may have a tiny orifice to fill bowl when down and fires up thru the coil when running.

You can make one out of old boot leather pretty easily. Look for videos on leather pump cups. Soak the leather in hot water, stretch and form it around a dowel the right diameter and tie it off. Stretch it TIGHT and avoid wrinkles. Let it dry over night. Take it off the dowel and trim it to fit. Punch your center hole, install it on the pump stem, soak it in light oil and Robert is your father's brother.
