I've been reading and playing (as a mere amateur) straight from a facsimile of the 1674 book for many years and it's great to hear a gifted player who respects the original music so much. He really sticks to what Gaspar Sanz wrote, with a modicum of logical liberty, interpretation and adornment as it would be played at the time.

People may not realize that this rendition is "realized" from "a sparse, confusing framework" of notes and instructions that Sanz wrote. But he never wrote out note for note. This is a delightful and creative fleshing out of Sanz's intentions. Bravo Maestro Smith for doing the impossible-making sense out of Sanz's book.

You'd be surprised at how much baroque music is just realizing a framework and improvising the rest. Pretty much anything basso continuo related is 99pct improvisation. Most lute music isn't intended to be performed exactly as written in general. Baroque guitar specifically has a lot of its own stuff going on too.

@@liljejohansson9461 I'm listening now to Jose Miguel Moreno's traversal of Sanz, and will compare. I expect to find plenty of differences. As well, I've been meaning to sit down with Jerry Willard's recordings and his arrangements for both baroque and modern guitar (I've had these for years, but life interferes). Not easy stuff to play that sounds in any way idiomatic in my hands--will take plenty of work!

So, when interpreting works like these, does it help or hinder to review other material from the period which may more clearly define how the style is to be played?

SANZ étudie la musique, la teologie et la philosophie à Salamamca. Il apprend à jouer de la GUITAR à Naples, où il est organiste à la cour royale. Il écrit trois livres, de pédagogie et œuvre, pour GUITAR baroque, qui forme une partie importante, de l'actuel répertoire de GUITAR baroque. Merci pour la video sublime et ce moment avec SANZ.

But it IS there: track 2, starting at 2:36. Its original title is marizápalos, a type of españoleta.
