Robert Costin plays J. S. Bach's complete Well-Tempered Clavier on the Metzler organ at Trinity College Cambridge.
robert-costin.com/recordings
From the booklet notes:
'My personal journey with the WTC dates back over a quarter of a century and has led me to perform it on harpsichord, clavichord, piano and organ. There is no doubt that one can justify a more historically 'authentic' complete performance on certain of these instruments, but ultimately this is in the ear of the listener: arguably, the music is simply too great to be restricted to one keyboard. The 48 are nowadays rarely performed on the organ but in the late eighteenth century and early nineteenth century there was a tradition of playing them on the instrument. This was particularly the case in England, where pedal technique was rudimentary and knowledge of his organ works was limited. The organ has the advantage of being able to sustain the contrapuntal lines, but in the wrong environment this could lead to all sorts of acoustical disadvantages. I believe the wonderful Trinity College organ possesses all the right qualities to justify this project, something that I hope is evident in these recordings. The motivation for the recording was one of exploration rather than an effort to prove a point and it has been a hugely enriching experience.'

Great to hear this recorded on a pipe organ, Bach would not have worried in the slightest. He intended it to be played by any keyboard instrument.

Andras Schiff once said that the piano was the only keyboard instrument capable of playing all the preludes and fugues properly. With all due respect, I think we all know that he meant to say the organ.

The organ is definitely better at some of the fugues with long pedal points that decay so quickly on other instruments they don't have their full effect. CPE Bach recommended restriking the long tied notes but no one ever seems to do that when they play them on piano, harpischord, etc. Just listen to Fugue 1 -- on every recording on another instrument, the low C decays after one or two measures leaving the tenor and soprano voices to play alone for the last couple of bars. But here the pedal point stays until the final chord. (Fugue 20 can't even be played correctly on an instrument without a pedal board)

Every other composer pales in comparison to J S Bach. A love affair that broadens and deepens with time. Never pretentious or overbearingly indulgent. Who was this man that created such musical wonders?

Beautifully said, every word. Pale in comparison. Sublime master by the hour. (His foundation secret is in the root movement of the chord progression, a simple consistent formula that uses strong, weak, and very strong connection types. The only theory book I have found mention of it it is in Schoenberg's 'Theory Of Harmony'.) And a beautiful recording by one who hears the harmony and sustains the relevant tones across, mixing adjacent chords or parts that point the harmony.

I used to think that this masterpiece is not suitable for organ because I onced listened to a bad recording. Happy to know that my point is disproved after listening to this wonderful performance! Also organ can actually play those long notes that last for several bars as Bach intended on the sheet music which piano and harpsichord simply can't. I just wonder why people don't play this more often on the organ? WTC on organ is absolutely sublime!

Thank you for such a wonderful interpretation! Knowing well that Bach was an organist at the core, it never really struck me how the music he produced was so interleaved with his experience at the instrument. And, now it makes perfect sense! Having studied his music for many years, and played it myself, mostly on the piano, I do feel a little bit stupid to have come to this revelation only now. But, that is a credit to you and how you make his music come alive.

This version proved my opinion to me even more then I expected. I hope that your great work will gain more popularity. this recording blew me away many times, and I think your choices of registration and articulation were really well suited for the organ and the original music. this is before considering how impressive it is to record both books. the only thing I can think to change would be to occasionally add pedal, I think a nice 16' or 32' would really help on just the pedal point at the end of the louder fugues (edit: i just got up to the end of book 1 and heard you do this at the end of the b minor, very cathartic ending for the end of the book). really well done, and thank you, I really enjoyed this performance

Many thanks, I appreciate your comment. I think I'd use more pedal in places if I recorded it again. There are some obvious places to use it like the ends of the A minor Fugue Book 1 and the G minor Fugue Book 2. I also remember adding it in the E minor Fugue Book 2. Endless possibilities!

Thanks for your comment, I'm grateful. I recorded both books a year apart and my thoughts about using pedals changed. I've arranged many of them with pedals, however when I recorded on the Trinity Cambridge organ I decided to use them relatively sparingly because the instrument is so beautifully balanced. I save pedals for the end of big fugues, A minor fugue Bk 1, G minor Bk 2, E minor Bk 2 etc, a bit like the C major organ fugue BWV 547. I think I might use them more now. Some of the fugue subjects are not suited to pedals, eg the G major ones.

Finally the ending of prelude 22 makes sense. Because the piano can't sustain the top Bb long enough, the piece misses the sound like a perfect cadence. (I replay the held Bb on beat 3 of the last measure, but hearing it sustained on an organ is just right--no pun intended). Thank you for sharing this. Do you know if the organ is itself well-tempered or is modernly "corrected" to equal tuning? To me the fifths sound increasingly hard as the music goes through more exotic chords, which would make sense for a well-tempered organ.

Many thanks for your comment, I'm very grateful. I believe it's well-tempered, probably Werkmeister to my ears.

Очень понравилось. Было бы хорошо, если бы количество интерпретаций этого великого произведения на аутентичных клавирах приблизилось к их количеству на рояле.

In my opinion, the organ is the best instrument to play the Well Tempered "Keyboard" preludes and fugues! The organ can prolong the sounds as long as you want. It's like a "chorale". Organ is the king of all keyboard instruments, it's a kind of "baroque synthesizer". 🎸🇧🇷🇮🇱

Thank you. Great album by the way! Hearing Bach's clavier music on organ is a necessary experience, as organ was actually a very important part in Bach's mind along with choir.

I swear that 3rd fugue is played wrong. Or it was defo meant for organ. The sustains are so much more obvious with organ. Sounds like a different song at times. But when I play it on my electric keyboard with organ sound it still doesn’t sound like this

Many thanks for the comment, Luke - are you talking about the C sharp major fugue? The acoustic of the Trinity Chapel could have something to do with the sustains

Nevrotico19 The D major prelude and fugue sounds better on harpsichord as well imo, but nothing really suggests that it is specifically written for it. I think with preludes like E-Minor, E-Flat minor and B-flat minor or fugues like the Cis-Sharp minor, A minor (the unplayable orgelpunkt) and C-Minor it would be reasonable to assume that they are more suited for an organ. Book 2 doesn't sound good at all on organ, so i agree that the 2nd WTC was most likely intended for harpsichord.
@user-fu7zf4ck9z
@user-fu7zf4ck9z 3 жыл бұрын
Nevrotico19 I'd say the modern piano is the best solution for your problem, as you wont have to switch recordings between prelude and fugue and instead get the best of both worlds really. The challenge here is to find the right pianist, but that comes down to your taste of course. To me, most of book 1 is pretty lackluster on harpsichord, but pretty exciting on organ, however, i will always prefer piano recordings of the WTC (Nikolayeva, Tureck, Gould only for fugues, Richter if it wasnt for his fast tempi)
