Gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD or acid reflux, is a chronic condition in which stomach contents rise and enter the esophagus. This occurs due to problems with closure of the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, which is the junction between the stomach and esophagus. The most common symptoms are a burning sensation in the chest called heartburn, regurgitation, and an acidic taste in the back of the mouth. Heartburn typically occurs after eating and may worsen at night. Less commonly, people may experience dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing. Dysphagia can manifest as pain when swallowing, a sore throat, choking, coughing, gurgling or regurgitating food or stomach acids, feeling that food is stuck behind your breastbone, a burning sensation behind your breastbone, and hoarseness. There may also be nausea, frequent burping, chest pain, the sensation of a lump in your throat, wearing away of teeth, and bad breath. GERD can cause a recurrent cough, breathing difficulties, chest congestion, and lung inflammation leading to asthma, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
Complications that can occur from it include esophagitis, or inflammation of esophagus, esophageal stricture, in which scar tissue develops and narrows the esophagus, and Barrett’s esophagus, in which the lining of the esophagus comes to resemble tissue that lines the intestines - which can lead to cancer.
Risk factors for GERD include obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain medications. Hence, treatments include lifestyle changes such as losing weight and quitting smoking. Other lifestyle changes include eating several small meals a day instead of 3 big meals, avoiding food resulting in symptoms, not lying down 2-3 hours after eating, and raising the head of the bed. Foods that can exacerbate GERD symptoms include spicy, fatty, or fried foods, garlic, onions, citrus fruits, tomatoes, caffeine, and fizzy drinks.
There are also medications that can be used to treat GERD symptoms. These include proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs, and histamine-2 (or H2) receptor blockers, both of which reduce stomach acid production. There are also prokinetics, which cause the stomach to empty more quickly, antacids, which neutralize acid in the stomach, and medications that strengthen the LES.
Some people still have symptoms interfering with their quality of life despite lifestyle changes and taking medication. Still others wish to avoid taking medication long-term. In such cases, surgeries can be performed to reinforce and strengthen the LES. The most common of these is Nissan fundoplication. In this surgery, the stomach’s fundus is wrapped around the LES. During a total fundoplication, the fundus is wrapped 360 degrees around. In a partial fundoplication, the fundus is not wrapped completely around the stomach. Some people with GERD may have a hiatal hernia, which is when part of the stomach slips through the diaphragm into the middle compartment of the chest. If a hiatal hernia is present, that is also fixed during the surgery.
Asthma and GERD frequently occur together. The reason is not certain, but it is believed that acid flowing from the stomach injures the throat lining, airways, and lungs. Another potential cause could be that when acid enters the esophagus, a nerve reflex kicks in and constricts airways to keep acid out. This can result in shortness of breath.

It's been a long time since I posted a video... that's because a few weeks ago I developed severe symptoms of GERD. I went to the ER 4 times because of it. I was having a lot of difficulty breathing and chest pain after eating, drinking, and lying down. At first, I thought I had COVID, but got 2 negative test results. Once the doctors figured out what was going on, I got medication and needed to make lifestyle changes. I felt much better right away! I'm still continue to recover, but in the midst of everything, I did an enormous amount of research into GERD, so I thought why not make a video about it? - Viola

Heres my experience that helped me. I had really bad acid reflux and started developing spasms that were pretty bad, that pretty much happened most of the day. One of the following things fixed the problem. First I started eating papaya seeds, spoonful twice a day, with a glass of water with half a lemon squeezed in. Also was taking zinc pills. I did this for about a week, a few days later acid reflux is totally gone and zero spasms. The only other thing was I went to the chiropractor twice and got cracked. I had a problem in one of my ribs years ago which felt like a knot in my back overtime with my work. So there's a chance the spasm was due to my back as well. Hope this helps anyone give it a try.

At 35 years of age I seemed to have suddenly developed this issue. It has been about a year since the initial onset of symptoms and 4 months since I was first diagnosed. My physician has exclusively prescribed me with Omeprazole and has insisted on just leaving it at that. My symptoms have not improved one iota. I am now considering making these radical diet changes but, I was raised eating mostly cajun/creole food, I spent a few years living in a Mexican community and came to love the cuisine alongside learning a fair bit of home cookery and I currently live in South Korea. Essentially, every part of my own personal culinary history is chock full of spiciness, acid, fats, onions and garlic. Also, I've been drinking coffee since I was a kid, it always kinda helped me with my ADHD. Finally, I was poor growing up and actually got quite used to going to the cheapest buffet in town (long since closed down) for dinner and just gorging myself on that one meal a day like the rest of my family. The one big meal habit always stuck with me, essentially fasting between dinners. It's worked for me health wise well enough, I'm not overweight and I'm fairly active.

From this video I hav learned about association of asthma with GERD . Thanks . I wish this video was also talking about foods that help the digestion to naturally product HCL . Our stomach needs to be acidic in order for the food to be broken down . If the food isn't broken down the nutrients are not absorbed and the bacteria in the stomach travels to the small intestine causing SIBO . This can cause B12 deficiency and anemia. ACV, lemon juices, cabbage juice , sulphuric vegetables are helping with GERD. PPI are addictive, once you start on them for extended period of time it's hard to come off them . This causes many serious side effects. Vegetable and seed oils are pro inflammatory, wheat and corn are literally a poison to the gut . Sugar of all sources is worse than cocaine.

@@jojoubadi696 look, research shows gerd is actually the product of prolonged strong acid or WEAK acid in the stomach. Weak acid allows food to ferment in the stomach and doesn't stimulate bile to be released from the gall bladder and saponify fats. As a result your small gut rejects the incoming and reverses it back up. The LES is also weak. Why? Could this have to do with brain health and inflammation? What causes weak acid?

Sooo from everything else I’ve read and learned about gerd is that is actually a result of LOW stomach acid. Bcuz it is low the sphincter doesn’t close instinctively allowing some acid to come back up. It apparently instinctively closes when the body/stomach is producing enough acid
@NigelTolley

@@NigelTolley makes perfect sense because that would explain why foods aren’t digested properly when they come out the other end. if there was enough acid then you would have proper enzymes released by gallbladder and pancreas and food would be digested and absorbed correctly . thats y the acv solution works. it helps the stomach produce more acid which allows the food to be broken down better and doesn’t just sit in the stomach.

@@NigelTolley exactly proton pump inhibitors keeps the cycle going. GI doctors alway misdiagnose gerd/acid reflux issues. it’s not bcuz of too much acid it’s bcuz of not enough acid! I proved it myself 10 years ago when i was having acid reflux. i was given nexium or prilosec and it made me feel worse after a few days. I learned about acv and lemon juice/water and after a few days ...symptoms were gone and also when i started taking digestive enzymes it helped improve digestion. I should have made that my daily regimen. after a few years I slacked off and now here I am again becuz of stress and nerve issues, worse than before and suffering malabsorption

I have had reflux all my life, ever since being a baby in fact... So definitely not lifestyle related in my case. I have a congenital defect rather than anything self inflicted. The cause is a fault somewhere in the nerve that controls my lower esophageal sphinctor, it's relaxed and fully open all the time and never closes

@@lullabygoodbye25 Hi, I take lansoprazole 15 mg capsules twice a day. I also use Gaviscon (antacid suspension) syrup when my reflex is particularly bad. Drinking milk also appears to relieve sudden bouts of reflux. In terms of what helps me the most, I'd say the lansoprazole: It's consistent, effective and convenient and actually controls my reflux well (although I'm certain that I still get silent reflux despite taking lansoprazole).

I have yet to see a specialist but i suffer from all the symptoms that someone with GERD would suffer from. My GP had prescribed me esomeprazole 40mg which i also took gaviscon on top. That did nothing for me after being on it for 1 week. GP then prescribed pantoprazole 40mg which has worked better but i still get the heartburn, chest tightness and throat burn at night. I'm hoping to take pantoprazole for short duration to give throat some time to heal (2 week have been on it now) and see a specialist soon. I don't belch a lot, just a few times a day; but the coughing attacks worry me as it brings up stomach acid in to throat and i do worry about possible damage to lungs? Exercise is not possible atm but all the stress and only eating a couple of times a day has led to weight loss of 13kg in one month! I would like to find a natural way to manage/cure this rather than medicate for years on end and suffer the side effects.

I used to have heartburn every day, lots of burping, and difficulty breathing without vurping in my mouth. Some things that helped me: - WEARING LOOSER PANTS (big one, tight waistbands pushed that shit right up into my mouth) - Cutting dairy for the most part (I also cut meats, both can cause inflammation) -Regular sleep schedule!! (It reliably flares up when I pull all nighters) - Eating smaller meals and avoiding spicy foods It was the worst when I was eating a lot of ice cream, staying up all night every other night, and then running with tight pants on.

After the heartburn drink a small glass of water with one little spoon of Sodium bicarbonate. (idk how that called in your country) A lot of kitchens have that. People used it to make cakes or making meat more soft. Relief is immediate. Or buy a bottle of Magnesium acetate in your drug store. That reduces the gasses and the acidness after the meals.

Sorry you have this :-( Based on my experience and my own research (I’m not a doctor), PPIs can be problematic. They are necessary to use at first to let the esophagus heal, but they are often prescribed for too long at too high a dose. PPIs should be taken for the shortest time possible and it’s important to ease off of them to minimize rebound reflux. Also look into something called rumination since you are vomiting. It’s often confused for GERD. And yeah, PPIs didn’t help me either except I needed them at first for my esophagus to recover.

@NeuralAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry you're going through this :-( Stay hopeful - I was there a few months ago and now I'm almost 100% back to normal. I'm not a doctor, so don't take this as medical advice, but here is what worked for me. What really helped me with the regurgitation (and other symptoms too!) was diaphragmatic breathing (4 seconds in, 4 seconds out - work up to 4 sec in, 4 sec hold, 8 sec out) any time symptoms got worse and before and after eating. I also slept on a high incline on my back. Acid reflux meds are important for letting your esophagus heal, but from everything I've read, you should stay on them for the shortest time/lowest dose possible to manage symptoms, and wean yourself off slowly because there's a rebound acid effect. Also, not to scare you, because this is rare, but my GI thinks the PPIs I was on lead me to develop microscopic colitis, which really sucks. It's in remission right now, but it's not a fun thing to have and it's not curable. The PPIs also gave me a lot of side effects that waned the longer I used them. Also, the breathlessness is definitely the scariest part :-( Hang in there - it can get better. Also, another thing that helped me (I had a hiatal hernia) was a chiropractic maneuver (I got my husband to do it on me) where you pull your stomach down (you can look this up on KZfaq). Other tips: small, frequent meals. Wait 30 mins after eating to drink, drink up to 5 mins before eating. Don't drink through straws or gulp drinks. Avoid fizzy drinks. And, if you have constipation - that makes GERD/regurgitation worse because it presses up on the stomach. Diaphragmatic breathing, poop massages, and stool softeners like milk of magnesia or miralax help. Lastly, ask a doctor if you have rumination syndrome. Hope that helps! Viola

I have gerd too! and to me is the worse shit I've ever had in my life is not easy to deal with it everyday I'm sick, is really difficult to eat a meal when you feel nausea the same time when you're trying to eat, I get indigestion, dry heaving, in the morning when I get up, I drink baking soda mixed with water everyday, I drink a glass of vegetable juice everyday which helps me open up my appetite, I even take 2 vitamin c 1 zinc and 1 b100 helps a lot, I haven't been to a doctor yet but I got all the symptoms of gerd! I don't like going to doctors, and I despise when a doctor tries to stick something down my throat just to check to see whats wrong with my throat....I am trying to cure myself at home, my dad helps me a lot and I even take iodine drops which helps when my body's acidic...

My symptoms Belching (8months) Globus(8-10 months on and off) Post nasal drip(3 months after being sick from acute sinus infection) Bloated stomach but this symptom went away. My doctor told that I most likely don’t have GERD because GERD is mostly a symptom of heartburn which I don’t have. He said my belching & bloating is from over eating and swallowing air & the post nasal drip is from allergies after getting sick. I never told him about the globus sensation though but my symptoms 100% sounds like LPR(Silent Reflux) or maybe IBS??? Idk. I also suffer from anxiety. As a kid I had asthma which I still have but its it had anymore. I tested negative twice for H. Pylori

I have several panic attacks because of GERD. Difficulty of breathing something heavy on my upper abdomen I sometimes burp but most of the time I was farting. This sympy triggers everytime I consume dairy, coffee, chocolates and spicy foods, and frequent eating. I also have chronic sinusitis all of the sudden I got a feeling it is because of my GERD.
@Rang76er

39 years old and never had GERD issues until earlier this year. I am pretty athletic and don’t have weight issues. I have that upper- abdomen “weight” feeling you describe that sometimes gets relieved with a burp or two, but then it’s game on. I thought I may have a hiatal hernia. After the burp, I feel inflammation and burning in my throat, sinuses get involved with burning sensation and blockage and there is a waterfall of post-nasal mucus that just lingers and sometimes affects breathing. This can be quite scary. I have had trouble identifying a trigger. The second I feel things coming on, I pop some Pepcid and maybe a couple of Tums. If I catch it in time it isn’t debilitating. Will follow up with an ENT very soon. Good luck, Michelle.

I'm not sure if this is GERD but has anyone else had this little grain-of-rice sized thing stuck in your throat? 8/10 times when I swallow, I feel like something's there. The funny thing is that this same exact thing has happened to me a long ago where it lasted for weeks on end until finally, it came out of my throat in the morning when I woke up and I spit it out but this time around - it's been going on for 2 months. I'm not sure what to do. For example, if I drink water - I feel something is stuck in my throat. It's also making my breath smell so I'm constantly carrying around Halls on me in case I'm in a social setting. It's so frustrating, I don't know what to do. I have some peace of mind because this same exact thing happened to me a long time ago (as I mentioned above) but it's so uncomfortable. Any advice would be appreciated.

Does anyone have throat issues with GERD? I would get tight throat sensations and choking sensations like someone is putting two hands around my neck and trying to choke me. I would sometimes gag from this. Food feeling stuck on the side of my throat, after eating meal shortly which causes me to panic and this has been done before, would get checked out, nothing stuck or they won't check me since I'm eating, talking and drinking. Shortness of breath, heartburn and burning throat. It gets worse since I have severe anxiety disorder. This is so annoying to deal with, I feel like my symptoms will kill me one day, the ER doesn't do much, just recommends me to see my GI and just take over the counter medicine for now. If someone is dealing with the same symptoms too, I'm sorry you're dealing with this.. it just ruins my lifestyle so much when I feel like this, even though they said lifestyle changes can help drastically.

That is EXACTLY what happened to me. The following is from my personal experience (I'm not a doctor). Eventually I was told I had esophageal hypersensitivity - basically the nerves in my esophagus got "traumatized" by something and were now over-reacting to normal stimuli - e.g. certain foods, textures, food that was too hot/too cold, thin liquids like water. It got to the point where I could only eat 4-5 foods once they had been super blended and could barely drink water. The doctors said that it would have only continued to get worse until I'd only be able to eat/drink via a feeding tube. The only way to improve, and I know how hard this is because of the choking feeling, is to slowly expose yourself to things that are uncomfortable. It can take weeks to months to start improving. But there is hope - it's been 1.5 years now since I was in your shoes and pretty much back to normal. Try doing diaphragmatic breathing before and after eating (make sure you're doing it correctly). I also had silent reflux (a form of GERD), rumination syndrome, and a hiatal hernia. Maybe ask them for tests specifically for those things and others like eosinophilic esophagitis. You need to see a gastroenterologist though. Hope that helps! - Viola

Sadly, if one has systemic scleroderma disease, that disease can cause the same GI damage like GERD does. It can also lead to dysphagia, strictures in the esophagus, and in some cases--even cancer of the esophagus as well as Barrett's esophagus too! This is caused by a type of collagen that, if produced too much in the body, can cause cellular damage, but scleroderma causes overproduction of that collagen.
