The little girl's acting was heart touching.... Those shy expression when she called out her father first time was so adorable...

What a beautiful story... In Buddhism, "non-duality" means "not two" or "one undivided without a second":it refers to the high/mature (?) state of consciousness that 'death' & 'birth' , the feeling of 'happiness' and 'sadness', 'meeting' and 'separation' and the 'beginning' and 'end' are not two but one... When one gets to realizes this, that is when he or she transcends the dichotomy of I & others and that is also when one finally gets to see & realize everything we see and experience is mere a representation of our mind and thought... just like there's no such a thing as absolute & relative(?) truth. In Buddhism, there's this notion of 'love without attachment'; that is love means ' to give' without expecting any return. We always experience the feeling of sadness & happiness when we love others, that is because of this human made feeling of attachment and possessiveness ( the film also talks about possessiveness) for someone (person) or something (a thing), which always leads to this uncontrolled fear or happiness, or both. Attachment is when there is expectation of love from others... When we are free of attachment & possessiveness , we will get to see the person or object as is without representation/reflection of our mind and thought.. and that is also when one can truly 'give' without expecting any return. (Monks in Korea often say "Mountain is mountain, water is water" that is, there's only a subject of one thing but we see or experience it differently because of our mind & thoughts .. when one comes to realize/ gain enlightenment that all things are manifestations of that same truth. one can finally appreciate things for what they are and give more knowing their form is both impermanent and eternal.) The monk in the film, the girl's father was afraid of this feeling of attachment for his daughter....but the harder he tries, the worse he gets, feeling more attached to the girl and as a result, he pushed her away in harsher ways hurting himself and the girl.. that is what the master monk was worried about.... any feelings of extreme is like dualism & centerless .... In an attempt to console the little girl who felt let down from her father, the master monk told her that coping the lines from the book will grant her all of her wishes... and she did in her little notebook.. later that notebook has returned to her through one of the monks and she learned that her farther picked up where she left off and continued copying the lines and finished the notebook likely as a monk but more as a father wishing whatever she was wishing could be granted. (that was 6 months before he died) Also by doing so, he was wishing to see her again..hence he went to the gate every evening just like his little girl used to do hoping to see him) Towards the end of the film, the daughter who now understands why his farther acted the way he did, burns the notebook rather than keeping it and responds to the younger monk's question of why: " he would have wanted me to burn the notebook, transcending the mind of possessiveness.. that's what I can do for him." She now knows her father was always in a great pains not being able to walk the life of monks as he hoped due to his attachment to her...(she always thought it was only her and her mother living the painful life). and she realizes that he wouldn't have wanted her to live her life in the same pains....so to be free from the pains coming from attachment, she burns the book.... Thank you for such a beautiful story again, KBS! =)

Touching...little Haejong felt let down the hard way. Liked the way it portrays how one's irrational decision can end up hurting others psychologically.

Great film. {spoiler} The father was sadly selfish and valued his peace and enlightenment more than his family who loved him so much. What kind of enlightenment would mean hurting and abandoning others? Is it peace even if the man himself has inner turmoil because of his decisions? I like the older daughter's point, what is the point of helping others later when in the present he abandons the people around him.

Warped ideals. How can one get peace when instead of loving the people closest to him, he sent them through hell? A helpless woman worked in what looked like a brothel and a daughter living in resentment, first against the mother, then the father. The hurt she had to bear. It's a miracle she eventually has her family and children despite the damage done to her

Non-duality or Nondualism mean "Not Two" or "One Undivided without a second" the storyline is amazing and the acting of a child is cute and her crying actingvery touching.Beautiful special drama. I love sad movies and drama.❤

What a great teaching on nonduality via this movie. The mountain temple reminded me of my grandparents, their village with wooden and stone houses high on the hill and the tranquil temple up on the mountain. A feeling of immense Calmness plus sadness seems to engulf me watching this movie.

Good story. But hide how monk met a woman and got daughter. This monk is suffering and struggling within his mindset. In fact, no need to be extreme. In Theravada Buddhism, it should be middle path. No need to be extreme. Extreme is dangerous. Now this monk is too extreme and hurt his daughter for his desire to cut off all attachment. Anyway, he still attached to his daughter.
