#Keybored #mechanicalkeyboard GATERON is KILLING IT! OIL KING is the NEW INK BLACK for EVERYONE
Last year, Gateron has launched so many amazing switches... CJs, Box Inks, Cap V2s and on and on. This year... They start it off with a BANG with the new Oil King Linears. I know... the name is stupid. BUT... the switch... it's KING.

I think it is important to also mention the effect of the long spring. It feels snappier, and returns faster than a normal spring. It evens feel "tactile," somehow, due to the higher initial force. Might help increase typing speed.

That's crazy, I recently put a whole build together with Poseidons, and they're quite nice lubed and in a board, though I may be biased as it's my first properly lubed build. I am very interested in the oil kings, I may have to get a few to try, but I love the Poseidons, so enjoy them as you have them! And, if you're really wanting some oil kings, perhaps just use it as an excuse to build another keeb, right? :D

I feel that what sets apart a clone switch manufacturer is when they evolve from simply taking specs given to them by customers, and start to actually do their own R&D to make their own unique innovations to the switch market. Kailh was probably first to get past this point when they created Choc and BOX switches, but Gateron really seems to have taken well to the specific concerns of the enthusiast community, at least as far as they play to their strengths with linear switches (not to mention that Zeal's new Clickiez uses the Cap switch design as it's base). Outemu seems to also be on the cusp of taking this leap, and we may soon be seeing JWK take their own liberties with switch design beyond just the recolors and materials combinations. I'm really hoping that this will lead to even more exciting times ahead for new switches.

Great to see more concrete numbers being added to switch comparisons! One note, from some recent Gamer's Nexus vids, it seems any time that acoustic measurements are being taken that the device should be placed on a stand or something at a set distance as opposed to being held in hand.
@JPMedia1

I think the way GN did is the correct way to measure an accurate db reading, but when it comes to the tonality and pitch of the switch, the closer the mic is the better. When closer to the switch tonality and pitch (most likely) drops off/changes over distance. My only critisims for his testing on this part would be that he held the reader in his hand rather than place it on a stand (since vibration and movement of the hand is sure to change the pitch of the reading).
@Ragnorok64

@@JPMedia1 I'm trying to understand the intended tone of your post. The first half makes it sound like you're setting up a refutation of bringing up GN and their methodology with respects measuring sounds from switches. This brought something to my mind. The community has been lacking a lube comparison for a long time, I'd love to see you do one as krytox seems a bit overpriced per gram. Needless to say there are countless varieties of lube.

loved these more concrete tests! I think an objective way to measure smooth and scratchiness is by placing a shotgun mic at a fixed distance from a switch with the keycap on while pressing (only in the mid section and don't bottom out) the swtich repeatedly. You can then compare the db readings in post. It's not the most objective way but I believe it is better than just going on ear and feel alone. Love your videos and keep up the good work!

Great work, I'm going to order a set of these. Also kudos on the production quality. This is one of the best review videos ever made, not just switches.

I've tried a few switches and decided to try these based partly on your review here and others. I have to say these switches are really nice. The out of the box smoothness is undeniable. The ones I received (just about a week ago) had zero scratchiness at all, just completely smooth actuation entirely. I was skeptical the out of the factory lube job would be that good but it really is that good. I may actually be close to my endgame board with these switches being part of that equation.

Oil king is a position/supervisory role in the US Navy. Per OPNAV instruction 9220.2 series, The ship’s oil king must be a senior (E-6 to E-9) machinist’s mate designated by a letter signed by the commanding officer (CO). The oil king is the primary operator, tester, and record keeper for all actions relating to fuels and boiler water and feedwater testing and treatment and must be a graduate of the Boiler Water and Feedwater Test and Treatment Chelant Basic Certification Course (A-651-0019); the Boiler Water and Feedwater Test and Treatment Chelant Supervisor Course (A-651-0116); and all required fuel testing courses. Not sure why they decided on Oil King though.

I really can’t thank and applaud you enough for the scientific and objective review. The charts and help with determining what switch to get. I work in an office twice a week and when i go in I used keyboards with silenced switches but i felt that i was missing out with more audible switches. I’m using a kikuichimonji with lubed and filmed red inks on an uhmwpe plate and I was looking for another switch to put in a bear 65. This oil king might be it which a custom PP plate for a more muted sound. Instantly subscribed

Found Oil Kings for $.65 and CJs for $.60 on Divinikey. My brother got the oil kings while I got the CJs. Doesn't matter if one is better than the other, I think we both won with our switch choice at the price we found them.
