Gates of Hell: Jim Raynor and Dominion Forces Begin the Invasion on Char (Starcraft 2)

The beginning of invasion on zerg planet Char. The initial landing was a near disaster. Most battlegroups were destroyed before reaching the surface, and those that survived were badly scattered. The chaos was aggravated by communication difficulties between ground units and higher command.
In preparation for the assault on Char, Prince Valerian Mengsk not only acquired the components to a xel'naga artifact, but also took nearly half of the Dominion fleet as well. The prince was acting parallel to Emperor Arcturus Mengsk, and neglected to share all the details with his father. Only upon reaching Char did Valerian reveal his intentions to Arcturus: to defeat the Queen of Blades and prove himself a worthy successor. The emperor was pleasantly surprised by his son's initiative and daring, but doubted whether Valerian had the experience to succeed. On the other hand, Arcturus was unpleasantly surprised to find Valerian had entered into an alliance with Jim Raynor, and Raynor's Raiders. Nonetheless, it was too late for the emperor to recall the expedition.

Jim Raynor took command of his sector and rallied terran forces in reach in order to have a chance to assault the zerg, as terran casualties escalated both in the ground and in orbit. Several Dominion units, continuing to land by drop pod, were rescued by Raynor's Raiders from the zerg and attached themselves to the rebels in the absence of orders.
As Jim Raynor pulled in troops to secure a perimeter, General Horace Warfield crash landed nearby aboard the battlecruiser Helios. The crew dug in as the zerg pressed in. The Raiders sortied to relieve the beleaguered battlecruiser. They made it just as the zerg were overrunning the survivors. Jim Raynor and Tychus Findlay personally rescued a wounded General Warfield.
The terrans had their foothold, but at heavy cost. A push on the main hive was urgently needed before their strength was depleted against the numerically superior zerg...

There was something about their lore, that they actually expell gases when in space to move forward, but those would be too weak in an atmosphere, and the mutas themselves must mostly use the same muscles for either method of locomotion, so the overmind never bothered to give them an instinct to stop flapping their wings while in space.

Just realised somethign Funny: So Jimmy Rescued Warfields life after his ship crashed in Zerg Territory. But warfield was killed by Kerrigan in the Zerg Campaign. Kind of like Edmund Duke.

Dunno, how it would be in future war though... If forces aren't massive, that means, judging by logic, these forces must be some spec ops or smth.

what really didnt like about sc2 is that when you rescue rescuables they change to your color. i really liked sc1 when you rescue units they stay their original color. would have been nice to know which units where dominion and which where mine. get a nice red and blue combo going =/

Virgin Edmund and Chad Warfield. Unlike Edmund who needs Siege tank or battlecruiser to fight, Warfield just needs his CMC and gauss rifle to fight in front with his marines.

Wings of Liberty was the best installment of the SC2 franchise, story-wise anyway. Sure, everything was still in the early stages gameplay-wise, and improvements have been made. However, I still feel that the writing and characters in WoL were signs of Blizzard at its height. Tragic how the last nine years have eroded the company.

Tell me about it, this was still fun to play and while the story it hardly Shakespeare, it is internally consistent and has decent characters. Heart of the swarm? Tried hard to make us root for someone who is acting like a spoiled child and is doing offscreen genocide for her petty vandetta, with characters that would have made poor antagonists, let alone main heroes to root for. At that point, i would have preferred if it would have been just Karrigan being her Brood Wars self Bitch queen playing everyone else for fools with an act, even if it had undermined the ending of Wings of Liberty, but nope. Tried to sell her as the hero, despite being everything but.

@@_Muzolf kerrigan and amon are the two main failures of SC2's story, kerrigan in sc1: a total murderous bitch that Fs everyone, and now in SC2 she's suddenly the saviour of the entire world lol, also the Amon thing is lazy story writing at it's peak: tell a complex story about REAL WAR between races? nope, introduce a big ultimate bad guy that has no motives outside of destroying everything.

@@excitedme530 They explained why Kerrigan was like this. She was under the indirect influence of Amon. The Overmind couldn't control her because she had a human brain and she was already angry at the universe for being abandoned, she only had some humanity to Raynor. When the Xel'naga artifact fixed her infestation, she was human again and thus returned to her normal self which was how she was in the first starcraft game in chapter 1.

First playthrough of this I chose to eliminate the zerg air support. Then in the final battle I just put down bunker clusters with the works at the entrances and filled my base with a grid of those flame turrets. Second playthrough, I eliminated the ground reinforcements. Then in the final battle I built a fleet of battlecruisers and science vessels to defend my lines and yamato the shit outta the Queen of Blades.

From what I recall destroying the Nydus worm tunnel network makes the game infinitely easier in the final mission as it just means here and there a flight of mutalisk or broods would approach you from the front over the lava lake before eventually the giant flying behemoth approaches as a sort of minibox. The nydus tunnels however if you choose to destroy the orbital platform with all the surge flyer hatcheries results in a metric fuckton of Nydus tunnels popping up everywhere spewing out 10 times more zerg.

Man, sc2 was released more than 10 years ago. I still remembered how excited I was on how advanced this was over sc1. The no-LAN was a big of an issue back then with the internet not as fast and wit Corona, that doesn't seem as important today.

I imagine the captain of the top ship calling for evasive action out of panic and not realizing there's another ship already in the path of where they're evading to. panic in a battle can cause all sorts of extremely stupid and costly mistakes.

I always thought that those ships were close enough to the planet's atmosphere for the gravity to take effect, and the Zerg simply attacked the first ship and when it falled, it destroyed the secon one.

@Afqwa zerg have consumed alot of worlds, but that doesnt mean kerrigan is on all of them. Would make sense for all zerg to try and save kerrigan or just ignore it and try to make their own swarm, like Na'fash(or whatever she was called). In hots it was mentioned, that one of broodmothers with leviathans rejoined the swarm, which meant she left it. Explains why there was only a single leviathan in WoL, and also why kerrigan couldnt escape this easy. Or she just wanted to get the artifact and not leave. Fire? Creep doesnt like fire, but this isnt redstone III, not this unstable. I never saw sc2 as e-sports game and totally not trash they call overwatch. If you dont want any xelnaga stuff, just play custom campagains.

@Afqwa Well. There are several arguments against those points. First, Char was the Zerg Primal Hive since Starcraft 1, so is logical to put the final battle there. About finding Kerrigan, both Terran and Protoss have ways to locate massive Psionic energy readings, and if you look for the Queen of Blades, you only look for the most Zerg filled planet in the sector and assure that the scanners show that the psionic readings are high. Third, the protoss and the Dominion did tried to attack Kerrigan. Three fleets in fact, two Terran and one protoss by the end of the Brood Wars. The three of them got destroyed completly by Kerrigan and her Swarm. Considering that Mengsk it's concerned only to keep his power in the sector and Artanis was interested first of all in rebuild a massive fleet and recover Aiur, those mayor factions didn't want to pick a fight with Kerrigan directly. It was not their first priority. Lastly, the Zerg have intelligence in the sector, but Kerrigan by that time wasn't interested in conquering the planets of the Koprulu Sector, she was primarily interested in finding the Xel'Naga Keystone and to prepare herself for the arrive of Amon, wich constantly talked to her by the connection that the Overmind had with her. And the invasion wasn't succesful in the long run, yes they won at the end, but the primal assault was a disaster and only the Keystone allowed them to defeat Kerrigan and her Swarm. Otherwise, they would have been crushed. Besides, Kerrigan was in the planet were she was reborn, in her primarly Hive Cluster with billions of Zerg to defend her, and the planet's atmosfere and terrain on her favor. I seriusly doubt that she expected a full on invasion in the surface.

The fact that Zergs feel pain and gets distracted by it disturbs me. That is a retcon to its original lore. In SC1, a marine was emptying his magazine on a Hydralisk that was clawing him to death... That hydralisk didn't even flinch as it is being damaged by rifle rounds.

I’d imagine they developed better weaponry against certain enemy types of Zerg. Plus that hydralisk was hit nowhere near its weak spot which is why the shell bounced off its armored skin.

the scene would feel more epic if youve played it on insane difficulty. youll have to choose if the building and units are worth rescuing without losing a lot while keeping a healthy defense on the resource, the sounds of siege tank defense fit so damn well on the planet.

I just completed the campaign and brutal myself for the first time. What surprised me was how doable it was. I’m really excited for the giant grant games nightmare edition though, I think that’ll be more towards what you’re describing

Zerg in the past: Cerebrate in BW with a fraction of the brood annihilating combination fleet of the UED, Dominion, and Protoss Zerg now: 25 battlecruisers, help.

It wasn't explained in game but each of the Cerebrates specialized in different tactics (Daggoth controled the main force and Space Combat, Zasz was specialized in Sabotage and Guerilla, Nargil is Espionage and Tracking, etc). When Kerrigan took control and denied the creation of the New Overmind, she actually weakened the integrity of the Swarm. Because the Cerebrate each had full control of a portion the entire Swarm and each portion had a specific purpose. Even if she didn't hunt them down, the Cerebrates still would have died eventually since they couldn't sustain themselves without an Overmind. She effectively removed her ability to Micro-manage the Swarm, she realized this and created the Broodmother Queens. What Kerrigan has and calls her "Swarm", is probably at the very most, only a little bit over half of the entire True Swarm that was once under the Overmind. So yeah, 25 Battlecruisers would probably give her a bit of a problem.

Jim Raynor is the only character to ever defeat Queen of Blades. In SC Brood War, last level, Arcturus, UED and Protos united and even together they couldn't defeat Queen of Blades. But Raynor did. The only reason Jim didn't just take out Arcturus was because he lacked ambition and purpose to do so.

@@Ambu570 top tip, 3 siege tanks and 4 bunkers with 4 marines and marauders(each side reapectedly) are enough to stave off any attack leave some vikings to kill off the broodlords that come in the latter half of the mission upgraded or not this strategy will be enough to hold the line

Okay I absolutely love this game and franchise. But after many years of playing the game and watching the cinematics I see a few issues. 1) those magazine in the Gauss Rifles don't have enough space to carry the amount of ammo the marines and general are firing at full auto, especially with the size of the caliber of the rounds. 2) The marines don't reload 3) The marine suite does not appear to carry any spare ammo anywhere on the person, so they are basically sent into battle with only one mag and that it. (I can see why, marines tend to die before they ever really get to a reloading situation). 4) I guess peripheral vision is not required. 5) The general said that Raynor and Tycus saved him and his men, did anyone else see any men still alive besides the general at the end? 6) Char is a volcanic planet, lava everywhere, toxic fumes, just a bunch of bad things in the ground and air, where is the oxygen being produced for these marines to breath? 7) In the opening Cinematic we see Tycus getting suited up, during we see that there are obvious holes in the armor it's not a 100 percent sealed suit, so with this being the case I would think that the armor for regular marines would be the same so on the space platforms wouldn't marines die from being exposed to space? 8) What's the point of the armor if the attacks are going to get through anyway, might as well just have regular combat clothing with light armor and have a mobile force instead, twice as fast and sneaky. 9) The Gauss rifles don't have sights. 10) That single punch was enough to kill a hydralisk when it takes multiple rounds of a regular rifle to do so. Damn general, forget our rifle and use your guns instead, might get more kills that way. 11) Instead of trenching down like and idiot, leap frogging would have worked so much better. General, you are not a great combat leader "belay that order, stand your ground" or "shut up and stay exactly where you are and keep doing what your doing that is not working". 12) Why is Raynor's round casing heavy enough to sink into the ground? All round casings have to do is hold the powder and the actual bullet. No need for the casing to be that heavy. 13) Why does Raynor have two laser sights, seems pointless, one should be good enough. 14) How is Raynor able to see out of his visor? sure two eye holes to see through but otherwise everything else is blocked by the paint limiting his vison and peripherals even more. 15) So I see plenty of high ground that the general could have bunkered down on top of but decided not to go for the high ground. 16) The generals battle cruiser has lots of really big guns that the crew would have been able to salvage and mount against the zerg. 17) The rifles don't have a but stock. 18) I thought the Mutalisks spat out glaive like projectiles that bounce off things, Why are these mutalisks all of a sudden spitting acid balls instead? 19) Where is the battlecruiser wreck in the closing cinematic? I would think something the size of multiple city blocks would be scattered all over the place. 20) Pause the Banshee attack cinematic and then try to find how they are able to fit that many rockets, missals whatever in the bottom of the banshee where there is almost no room for them.

Yeah the C-14 never made much sense in terms of magazine capacity. Even the SC1 version didnt (though it looked slick af ngl). It held like easily 30+ rounds of 9mm supersonic rounds in a mag that would hold 20 at best... but hey "it´s locked to burst fire to limit it´s ammo consumption due to it´s high rate of fire"...

2) Gameplay and cinematic purposes 3)They could just mount it on the super suit that they are carrying, but you are fighting against enemies that outnumber you 100x to one or melt you with super high tech, no point for more ammo it seems. 5) Landing capsules plus they didnt make more marines in the cinematic cause its cheaper. 6)You could ask the same for the zerg. Open visors cause its cool thats it. 8) Explosives and acid, also the armor increases strenght. You would be more vulnerable and weaker by not having it. Also the zerg beat you in mobility anyways so kinda pointless. 9) incorporated aiming aid in the visor no need for sights. 10) Hit it in the head where the brain is supposed to be, causes it to atleast lose counciousness, compared to blasting it in the torso and rest of the body that is much more armored and not nearly as vital. Also arm scythes melee bad idea. 12) its made so the cinematic looks cool. 13) it looks cool. 14) Maybe see through paint from the inside? Looks cool so they added it, probably doesnt make a lot of sense. 15)Probably didnt have a choice, being surrounded by zerg and having crash landed. 16) That assumes they arent completely destroyed and that they are given time to repair and place them. Let alone power them. The core is dead how are they gonna fuel the laser cannons? Keep in mind those are gigantic ships the size of a city. 17) No need? the power armor eats the recoil. 18) They shoot acidic parasites, that bounce from target to target until they die. 19) cheaper to animate, maybe forced to abandon it. 20) seems they spawn from beneath the banshee. I mean helicopters dont look like they have a ton of ammo either yet are able to fire a ton of rockets. The rockets can be quite compact.

4) While most of weaponry tend to tear through suit, it's possibly still better to have some extra armour. At least morally all newbies (especially those who is from prison, etc.) can be convinced easier to go into charge. 5) Banshees, that bombed lings, are Dominion's. If there was no Raynor, those could not fly to save general just because they would die. 7) Cinematic wasn't that detailed about suiting up. We can't be sure it's not sealed. And by any logic it should be. 8) Regular clothing won't let you carry bigger gun, compensate recoil of that big gun, punch as Warfield, etc. 14) It could be coloured just as the whole visor is orange. Like here it us orange and white. So I suppose, Jimmy sees everything just fine. 20) Bombs are quite compact. Look at any military aviation, modern or old.
