Multiple times adapted for the screen (including by Steven Spielberg), and in 1938 reworked by Orson Welles into a radio drama, the broadcast of which went down in history. Read years later, it turns out to be a prophetic work, a kind of foreshadowing of the 20th-century world wars.
How do people - both individuals and entire communities - behave in the face of an invasion that threatens mass destruction? Who are we to the invaders, and who are they to us? What role do new technologies play in this? And what can save us? Herbert George Wells attempts to answer these questions in a way that remains attractive to contemporary readers, and perhaps the widespread sense of unease, uncertainty, and threat makes "The War of the Worlds" a compelling and relevant novel even in the 21st century.
'The War of the Worlds,' H.G. Wells's most brilliant work, is also one of the few novels that, going beyond the fantastical nature of its assumptions, has entered the treasury of world literature.

This book is a masterpiece and is still the best of all tales of alien invasion - the stark descriptions of how ordinary people react to the extraordinary are brilliantly and terrifyingly imagined. I first read it way back in the late 70s (when I was living in the part of Surrey where the first part of the book is set) and I'd forgotten so many of the details until listening to this all in one sitting. Spielberg's ghastly version is a pale and dreadful travesty in comparison to the book, as are all the other attempts to rehash what HG Wells did so superbly. Sadly, we're unlikely to ever see an absolutely faithful-tothe-last-detail cinematic or serialised version that respects the setting and the period 100 percent... but wouldn't that be amazing!! (maybe a project for Peter Jackson?)

The Martians must be very tough to survive such a hard landing.

Yes, no parachute or reverse thrusters for a soft landing. I lived on Strand Rd. which runs along side Horsell Common.

@@manamsetty2664 My grandfather remembered the events exactly as related by the author. However, on that fateful morning he walked to the train station in Woking as normal and boarded his usual early morning commuter train into London Waterloo for his job in Half Moon Street in Mayfair. The rest is history.
