I grew up backpacking and camping a lot so it's a super nostalgic show. Nothing quite grounds me like building a campfire and being away from civilization for a bit.

I came for the wholesome camp anime, but i stayed for narration. I could listen to Akio Otsuka for hours

I'm really hoping the pine cones saying "Hello!" would stay through the entire series. So far Episode 2 ended up doing it too and it's fantastic.

In the States or Europe you'd use a camp axe or a hatchet, but the Japanese machete-like tool Rin uses here is called a _nata._ I've never used one, but I imagine it's a fairly stout blade, like a thick _nakiri_ knife. Edit: I'm told that the edge of the _nata,_ like just about every other Japanese blade, is very hard and thus brittle. You can wail on the wood like Rin does when she's breaking a branch in half, but that can chip the blade. Instead you want to do what she does in season 2 (and Nadeshiko in season 3 when she borrows it): You want to slowly tap the tool into the wood using another piece of wood. It won't always go through easily, like when there are knots in the wood.

Yeah the closest I've been able to find is Gerber has this Versafix machete that has a very thick end to it like an axe, but the width of a machete. It's surprisingly great at chopping wood and just hacking away at branches in your way. But because it's weight is distributed to the end, it can be tricky to hold onto it if you're using it like a traditional machete.

If you save up your dryer lint from home, you can stuff that in a used toilet paper roll tube, and add just a tiny bit of lighter fluid at one end. Best firestarter I've ever used.

The narrator's voice? Akio Ootsuka. "Kocchira Soriddo Suneeku...joukyou dou da...?" "Kingudamu Haatsu....yami no chikara de wa're wo mitadasu zo...." "Zehehahahahaha....kore wa....ORE NO JIDAI DA!" "Sessha wa Honda Heihachirou Tadakatsu!" His hands took a life...so that's why he's only using kicks. "HATRED IS WHAT DRIVES ME!" "WITNESS THE TANDEN ENGINE!"

A light chopper. It works like a hatchet but it's also versatile enough to do fine work like a knife. It's also thick enough that it's easy to split thin logs by doing what she did there or by batoning
