We took this medieval Christmas tune and turned it into a post-industrial groove anthem. This is the live performance at the 2013 Vespers at Millikin concert. Enjoy! See this score and all of my music at www.mikeemusic.com

Anyone who calls this "sacrilegious", or an "atrocity" is stupid and probably doesnt understand why music exists in the first place. It exists to be changed, if we stick to tradition the whole time, we would end up ruining the purpose of music. Now ill admit, some pieces are better in their original form, but that doesnt mean that newer, or revised arrangements are all terrible, and even if some dont sound good to one person, they might sound amazing to someone else. I admire the fact that some composers such as Mr. Engelhardt see the music of old as a canvas for the new. I admire the fact that he took the risk of mixing two eras to form this piece, even if it offended some, because thats what makes a composer a composer is risk. Theres music to be made in this world, and more to be made from that.

Survival Of The Fittest for a channel about being tough and surviving in the wilderness, it really looks like you can't survive that long with music. it's just a song and the people singing this are just people that like it. calling them "brainwashed asshats" is like calling your viewerbase asshole sheep that follow a ridiculous idiot. neither are probably true, but please don't make anyone look at your channel like that.

+Jay DeVita haha! Thanks. If you're not offending someone, then you're probably not risking anything, and you're probably not innovating, so you're probably not an artist.
@JP-gu6oe7 жыл бұрын
Not true . Innovation approach is inferior to traditional approach I feel the need to say that real art is not about innovation, so the part about being an artist should innovate is not true at all, and modern art is much less art in fact. Its destroying art and brainwashing young artists into splashing some paint on the wall and call it "trash art" or maybe the motive was to innovate, so modern art has ambigous concepts, and traditional art has profound technique. (it can be a sacrilege to innovate instead of getting into the technique)

@michaelrex69482 жыл бұрын
@@Monorat It's not bad taste. Form fits function. This is a hymn, therefore sacred music, and the musical style of this arrangement, for whatever merits you might think it has in itself, is not suited to sacred music. I say this having years of experience in quite a number of musical styles, sacred and not, and although I do like many styles of secular music, I accept that not all of them can be adapted to sacred, and I don't try to shorthorn then in... because I respect both sacred and secular styles of music.
@Monorat2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelrex6948 I mean what is the evolution of music without such pushing of the boundaries, idk if you've ever performed this piece yourself, but feeling the rhythm of this beast is really all there is to it, there is more to song than it's textual meaning and if anything this arrangement suits the text more. It's about rejoice and celebration, Christ is born and the gates are open, it's talk of bright songs, if it's textual relationship to sound your after this arrangement seemingly fits it more, there's more involvement, more ability to feel the rhythm. The original while bright, lacks that rejoice this one does, it's bland and sad.

@@michaelrex6948 and form fits function in machinery, parts, not art, art is the one subjective side to humanity and deserves it's lack of order when necessary.

@@Monorat I've not sung this piece in a liturgical context (I have sung it a lot with friends, though, and we are considering doing it this year in choir), but I've listened to just about every arrangement of it that exists. I do not agree that there is nothing to it beyond the rhythm, nor that this setting better fits the text. I find this rendition stale, uninspired, and completely out of line with the text -- it is a tune of rejoicing, and ought to be sung with power and enthusiasm, not repetitively rushed on the same boring three notes for half the time, only to cut and splice the text (that I question whether any of the singers understand) with more repetition of "gaudete" and rush through literally everything other word as though none of it had meaning or importance (worsened by them singing "gaudete" over some of the verses)... and that says nothing of how unnecessarily harsh and abrupt the change is between the (unbearably slow) tempo at which they begin and end and the (unnecessarily breakneck) speed in the middle. Nothing about this arrangement has the sobriety fitting its theme (and no, sobriety is not a contrary of jubilation; if you don't believe me, look up Viadona's Exsultate justi in Domino), and the attempt to shoehorn in a modern music style to an essentially medieval carol is painful in every way. ...and form fits function in art as well as machinery, because forasmuch as there is some degree of subjectivity in how humans express themselves, there is undeniably an objectivity in what is being expressed which plays a large part in how it is expressed (as, for just one instance, slow music is all but universally more appropriate for mournful occasions than fast music).
