I installed my cluster thinking the gas gauge would automatically move to the right position. I will now go fill up the tank, remove the cluster again and stick the needle on full. What fun it is to be stupid!

Straight-forward procedure and easy to follow. However, know that you are 'setting' your gauge needle, not '(re)calibrating' the gauge. To calibrate the gauge would require that each mark be set to correspond with the exact fractional fuel level relative to the capacity of the tank. As most electric OEM automotive gauges are not exact measuring devices, they provide an approximate reading/indication. At that, most OEM automotive gauges simply measure electrical resistance (to ground) and provide no straight-forward calibration feature. If it did, to accurately calibrate the gauge would require removing the sending unit and position the float arm to each degree in the range of the arm's sweep/arc to match the same degree of sweep/arc of the gauge needle. If the gauge itself does not have an internal calibration, it would be necessary to add small resistors at each mark on the gauge face or at coil resistor of the sending unit to exactly to correspond to the % of fuel remaining. Quite an involved process.

RoverIAC i was thinking the same thing. He says key on see where it goes, then key off and move it to that spot then key on and it should move back...dont that mean u did nothing? Lol

Good video man, thanks for the info probably helped a few people fix their fuel gauge. The only negative thing is when the music volume cranks up at the 2:00 minute mark it was very annoying. Reminded me of my old mustang with a bad crank sensor just keep cranking wouldn’t start.

This worked on my 98 Integra. It was showing only 1/8th of a tank. When I knew it was half full. Reset the needle to the "E" line exactly. Cycled the key on. Waited a minute. Then it started working again. Thank you.

I have this issue that when I fill up the tank the gauge is above the full level mark. And it doesen't move the first 100 km or so, then it moves to quickly. Any suggestions what this might be?

Thanks for posting this video. I'm hoping you can help me with a related question. I just installed a set of glow gauge faces on my 94 Accord. On the set I purchased, the tabs bringing current to the fuel and temperature gauges obstructed both the tach and the speedometer so the overlays wouldn't lay flat. I had already read the warnings about removing the gauge needles but while I was focusing on re-routing the electrical connections (with new gauge faces not firmly attached), I inadvertently pulled the speedo needle off. Everyone writes about how difficult they are to remove, but mine came off just from the light upward pressure of the new gauge face as i was performing a test fit with the rerouted wiring. So now I have perfectly functioning glow gauges but my speedo is reading about 15 mph fast. I've looked everywhere and all I've seen is that on Hondas, once you remove the needles, the gauge can't be made to read correctly. I caught that even though you demonstrated the procedure with your fuel gauge, it applies to all of them. Do you happen to know if it will fix my problem? I'm tempted to go disassemble it but it's 104 degrees right now. Any help would be appreciated!

@Dustin Collins Sadly, this did not work to recalibrate my speedometer. I never did find a fix for it. One crazy idea I had was to reinstall the gauges without the bezel, have a friend drive a steady speed using GPS as a reference, I could then lean over from the passenger seat and put the needle on with a pair of small needle nose pliers at the correct speed. It seemed like only a moderate risk of catastrophe at the time! Instead I relied on a 7" touch screen with gps for speed until selling the car in 2020. I hope you get it figured out!

I've literally swapped hundreds of clusters and never once had to adjust the needles unless I removed them. The gauges will adjust once the you koeo.

I have the same problem in my 96 Ram 1500 but with a full tank of fuel. I tried it then remembered that a few months ago, I physically removed my needle to "adjust" it so this fix won't work for me but thanks anyway. I wished I found this video then.:(

I’m having an issue with my 2005 Honda Accord gauge cluster… it turns on (the lights) but other tha. That the needles don’t properly read my fuel, rpm’s. Or speed.. or even engine coolant. There was a ground wire that was ran from behind the gauges to the negative wire on the lighter socket. I had unplugged it and it worked. But after putting in my new head unit all gauges stopped working… please help

Hey i got a 94 k1500. I took the needles off thinking i had to to get the black face plate off. Turns out i didnt have to. Now all my gauges are out of whack. Would your method work for the temp, oil, rpm, speed, and fuel? Idk how much gas is in the tank

That needles in my speedometer moves like there’s a magnet in them, I’ll move them to zero and they’re go right back up and the same for the other side, it’s a 2003 f150 and it also has stopping needles

+Sean Daigle In my case, I didn't have any fuel in the tank. The needle should have been in the zero position. So when I zeroed it out with the key off, and turned it back on, and it did nothing, it was finally showing the real reading. It was suppose to go down to the "E" with the key on, but didn't.

I repair auto instrument clusters and components for a living and he says “This pretty much applies to any vehicle”. I have to completely disagree with that statement. There’s a lot of different clusters out there and most have their own way of being calibrated. Just do research for your specific cluster if you happen to be in a position where your needles need to be adjusted. On the other hand you do have some good vids with good info.

mouser485 any easy way to set fuel gauge needle for 2004 Toyota. I had to remove all the needles, but now it shows a little less than is should. Pull out again and back- trial and error? Or can I just push it with my finger? Same for the temp gauge. Happily, the speedo and rev counter are spot on.

how do u do the speedo? my car says its going 5mph faster then i am. if im going 65 my speedo says its going 70? how do u recalibrate that? cause the speedo is at 0 when your not moving?

I had the same issue with mine until I bought a new cluster, also check to see if the vehicle speed sensor is going bad. I had that issue once as well.

First make sure your tire sizes aren't too small. Smaller tires will show a greater mph and the vehicle will be moving slower. If you have the correct tire sizes, then it's possibly the speedometer cluster.

So I took the RPM clock out of the cluster itself so I could shave the clear plastics a little to fit bigger LED bulbs but the RPM needle moved past 9k RPM and is now stuck at the bottom. I reconnected it to turn the key just to see if it would reset and it's moving clockwise to 0 RPM as it should but when I turn the ignition off it goes back to the bottom, any ideas? I know it has like a little spring behind the assembly part of the chip board Any info would be great, cheers

To calibrate the needle, you have to remove it and put it back, than rotate it clockwise and counterclockwise until you see that it stops on E. Just play with the needle. How about the temperature cage, why you didn’t calibrate? Your instruction is not how supposed to be. Sorry.
