#TheOffice is one of the greatest shows of the 2000s! I'm giving some background, trivia, the deeper meaning, and more. Today, we're looking at the #Gay #Witch #Hunt episode.
Often ranked amongst one of the greatest episodes of the Office, we take a deep dive into the kick-off of season 3, Gay Witch Hunt. This season 3 premiere of the Office kickstarted several new plotlines and advanced existing ones. Trivia for the day, how many times is the word "gay" used in this episode?
Thanks to our NBC Overlords for their creation and ownership of the Office.

I think Dwight's reaction to the kiss is underrated. And Micheal telling him to back down - just perfect.

It’s one of my fave ever just because of how fun and enjoyable it is to watch. It’s not emotionally straining like casino night or a special episode like dinner party, it’s just quintessentially Office, and so much fun to watch

I'm a fairly young gay, and I showed this to my parents and grandparents intentionally. I was laughing my ass off, but they were deeply horrified. I'm the "hypersensitivity generation", but this is my favorite episode. I think it's an excellent satire of both homophobia and the awkward dance straight people often perform as "tolerance". Oscar is forced to Come Out, and Michael makes it ALL about Michael. He goes through a personal journey at Oscar's expense. It's a truly hilarious social horror movie. The gay guy gets to be the view-point character for once! How can you watch this and NOT relate to Oscar, even if you're straight?

Did anyone else catch Larry Wilmore's voice as Mr. Brown? This time as the speaker of Diversity day for the Stamford branch. So funny that he is talking to them, again for something Michael did (revealing that Oscar is gay) and he again is using the HERO analogy from season 1.

If that kiss was unscripted, how, HOW, did everyone not just break down laughing and screaming? How and why did they stay in character?

I think it’s because they know Carrell’s ability. So they always need to be ready for him to go off script. Shoot, I think Steve’s audition for Michael has unscripted moments

This is the first video I watched on your channel and for this series. I want to thank you for creating this series. At first, I just wanted to know about the teapot but in turns out I wanted to know more theories on the Office. I totally agree with you when you said that Michael is just oblivious to things which I think is really funny. 🙂

In the season 2 Halloween episode Oscar came in dressed as a woman, it was implied that Michael was fully aware that Oscar is homosexual when he said “I bet you wished you could wear this every day huh Oscar”, since the line was delivered with a serious tone of voice. But I choose to look past it, the most convincing thing about the kiss scene has to be Oscars complete sense of disgust in his reaction to it.
@Mulverine

I read there was a deleted scene in an early season episode in which it’s mentioned that Oscar told Michael during his interview that he was gay. When that scene was cut, they played it off in this episode as it was new revelation for Michael.
@chikachika7782
@chikachika7782 5 ай бұрын
@Mulverine you're right it's in the extended cut of the office (I just watched Gay Witch Hunt yesterday and I'm 89% sure it's in that episode) Oscar tells the camera "I told Michael I was gay when he was interviewing me. But Michael laughed and said that I was the funniest guy he ever met, and he hired me right on the spot" or something along those lines. That's the reason that Oscar went to Toby when Michael called him f*ggy. Not that the word is ever ok, but Oscar told Michael he was gay, and a couple years later Michael calls him a f*g, outs him, established a homophobic environment, and proceeds to forcibly kiss Oscar against his will. Corporate definitely gave Oscar the car bc the camera crew got everything on video of one of their managers mishandling this so badly that the struggling company would have likely closed if they didn't pay Oscar off.

There is something to be said for the mere fact that the office was taking on this topic when even today, a whole bunch of shows are too chicken to do that. And there are a lot more now than there were then. Simple inclusion and representation means a lot to gay people. The Office did it well. You don't seem to rate social consciousness or bravery very highly, but I do. And so yes, to many, this was one of the best episodes.

I like the time jump! It’s jarring and subverts the expectation of flowing right into the casino night sequence. My gut doesn’t like the slow fade to indicate a memory. I don’t like that one bit. The way I laid it out might have been one way to do it. Billy, where you getting these extended cuts from?

I'm just thinking...sure it's bad that Michael outed Oscar. But why is nobody talking about Toby, an actual HR guy, outing Oscar to Michael (and sharing something Oscar told him confidentially)? Maybe Toby should have been fired for this.

Tbh I don’t think your proposed change is much different. So Pam looks at Ryan then transition to Casino night scene is too heavy handed. But, if Jim looks at the empty chair next to him, cue transition and that’s NOT heavy handed? Tbh I don’t think it’s a big deal either way but your proposed change is pretty identical

As a young gay who’d just come out when I watched this the first time, the line “yeah, I’m sure everyone would love it if I treated them like they were gay” was the first and so far only line to ever make me so conflicted that I had to take a break. I came back and loved the rest of it, of course, but MAN this show knew exactly what it was doing when it came to comedy.

To the point that this show couldn’t work now… it absolutely couldn’t… every episode would have one “triggering” moment and execs would be called to cancel weekly… the “hypersensitive” groups have destroyed comedy… which is why standup comics that cater to this crowd actually suck and the numbers reflect that… people want to be offended… it’s true… as a “straight white male”, nothings funnier than when someone makes fun of something I actually do, think, say or whatever… it’s hilarious! Getting angry at everything isn’t healthy! I suppose now we will get the chance to see… with the “reboot” of the Office coming out at some point… I seriously don’t think it’ll be this direct… I think they’ll “touch” these topics but not outright smack you with them like the original did and still does… this show is probably the funniest show of all time because of the inappropriate, “offensive”, uncomfortable stuff… if they were to have skirted the topics instead of had Michael go hard on them, this show doesn’t make it 9 seasons.. not a chance…

In terms of how highly I rank this episode, I think it's a fairly average episode by the extremely high standard of the first five seasons of The Office. Not the best, not the worst. But being an average episode in the first five seasons of The Office means this episode is in the top 1% of all sitcom episodes ever made.

This is probably the episode I have the most conflicted feelings about. Cause on one hand, we were finally getting gay rep. and it was unfortunately accurate to how people have treated me, on the other hand, I was just uncomfortable and disturbed. Basically lost sympathy for half the cast right there.

Sorry that you experienced that. I forgot who said it but in another analysis, this episode is praised for mocking not homosexuality but homophobia. Michael's outrageousness along with Dwight's antics are the butt of the joke. Oscar being gay is all matter of fact. I could see how this could be taken wrong but the intention seems to be affirming of LGBTQ+. As for Steve Carell voicing part of the "Ambigiously Gay Duo" on SNL though, not sure what the verdict on that.
