I have been teaching myself to program my own games for the Nintendo Gameboy Advance. I was challenged to program a simple 3D Minecraft style block building game on this old and slow console and it has been a fun and rewarding experience.
I hope you like my progress so far and let me know if you want me to make more updates on this and please list a few other games you might like to see simplified down to the GBA!
Thank you for watching!

@@3DSage Yo man, I really want to congratulate you on doing this insane project. It's crazy. But I think you are missing something, and that something is making this project open-source, or at least publicly available. I've been trying to learn 3d programming (using DevKitARM) on the GBA, and this would be a really helpful resource if made public. I (and anyone else) could learn so much from it. Making a simple showcase is really cool, but it does not help people who are inspired by your content to go out and make their own stuff. Even putting some resources in the description would help.

@halotroop2288
@halotroop2288 4 жыл бұрын
I think the main issue would be the controls, ignoring the graphical limitations (which this guy clearly doesn't give a fuck about lol). I have no idea how he made THIS work, but since Terraria uses a mouse normally, and dual sticks on console, how would you map movement of the player and the cursor, AND have buttons left over for placing and breaking, and selecting a tool/tile?
@Lucas_van_Hout
@Lucas_van_Hout 4 жыл бұрын
Caroline Bell obviously like this Minecraft build. An very vey stripped down version. I think if you simply it enough an terraria like game with an very limited amount of items and still being able to destroy everything and just an couple of boss fights and enemies could be an actual enjoyable game. And if you make it different enough in look and branding it probably wouldn’t get copyrighted.
@nitinanku
@nitinanku 4 жыл бұрын
Caroline Bell Do it like the 3ds and mobile version’s simplified controls. Dpad moves the player and the cursor in that direction. Up let’s you jump, the L and R buttons move across the inventory. A can be attack or break if you have a weapon or tool. B can be to place something if there’s a block in your inventory. And start can access your inventory which lets you access settings while select can give you that precise pointer thing letting you move the cursor manually while not being able to move on your own
@MMMercia
@MMMercia 4 жыл бұрын
@@Lucas_van_Hout Try re-reading their comment. The issue is not any content of the game like boss fights, items or even graphics, but simply translating the controlls of the original to the GBA controller, which should come first before anything you mentioned.

There are some homebrew versions of minecraft for O3DS. It's just that actual Minecraft is far more complicated than that homebrew and especially this GBA port and so consequently needs the N3DS's significant power increase.

There are quite a lot of full and pseudo 3d games on the gba. Some current game studios developed their first 3d engines on it, if not for the ps1. Since the gba was one off the first gaming systems that used an arm processor, some of the engines developed for the gba were also used for nokia symbian devices, windows mobile and early android mobile games. Nokia symbian phones used basically the same cpu as the gba but with better displays and they had 3d games developed for them as well. The nintendo ds, dsi and 3ds also used just standalone arm processors(10-20 times as fast with way more memory compared to the gba), but still - no dedicated 3d acceleration as opposed to the sony psp which had a tiny but fast separate gpu.

@@afruit6720 well, dipshit, that is literally what optimization is though: knowing what's unoptimized and fiddling around till it's better. so since they have done the first part (which is usually the harder part of the two btw) they now only need to try various things to see what improves it. if it was something one could just learn in a class or look up in a book telling us exactly what to do we wouldn't need programmers anymore now, would we, dipshit?

@@dragonslayerornstein387 yeah but that means he *is* learning. pretty much nobody knows 110% sure how to write "perfect" code, but he's already on the way to write better ones. e.g. "i shouldn't use as many nested loops probably" is a great start. though depending on the algorithm it might be inevitable, but then something like "make the outermost loop spawn threads containing the inner loops" might be useful. my point being: if you already know what you're doing wrong you're at least halfway there. then it's just about experimenting/asking about alternatives

Insanely impressive. Its a shame texture mapping true 3D polyons is extremely taxing. Only a few commercial games pulled it off well and many heavily relied on sprites. Keep going with this dude! YOUR NEXT CHALLENGE: The GBA sorely lacked a flight simulator that wasn't sprite based. If you could create a simple map with some hills, a runway, 4 sided polygons for cones for trees and actually program a simple flight model (not accurate, arcade like would be fine), that would be awesome. Im curious what approach you might take for it. Navigating 3D space that rotates polygons in realtime would look super impressive. A good nod to early 1980's where literally every new PC had to have a flight sim to be considered powerful. Your choice, first person or chase cam with a low poly plane. No guages or instruments necessary. Visual Example I quickly mocked up in Blender: imgur.com/gJ6Nugz Control scheme: A = Increase throttle B = Decrease throttle L+R = Brakes (ground) L = Yaw Left R = Yaw Right Dpad = Pitch / Roll Select = Flaps (cycle on/off to keep it simple) Start = pause Should you accept, good luck. Im not even sure its possible. If you do it- easily one of the best homebrew hardware pushers.

Terraria would be easy, it uses 32-bit colour and has sprites similar to that of a SNES, so all it would take is some upscaling of sprites an optimization Disclaimer: I have no idea if it is anything near this simple, this is just my idealized version of it

@@aaron_aj_knight_95 Clearly you haven't seen the fan remake of Sonic on the GBA. It was much, much better. But Sonic Mania is quite a bit more advanced than Sonic 1, so I don't know about that. Someone really really should do a sandbox game on the GBA though, the downside is battery saving. There's no way a sandbox world could be saved on such a small SRAM, right? GBA carts have 32KB, a small Terraria world is 2701KB on creation. Edit: Oh there's also 128KB Flash RAM, but that's still not big enough. Homebrew can theoretically make any size save file it wants on a flash cart, but I like to imagine what it would be like with original standards.

@ashketchum6585 4 жыл бұрын
@@halotroop2288 I see what u mean with extra sprites, more pixels, smooth slope animations, and 3d effects but all of that could still be achieved because there are Sega genesis rom hacks that achieve 60fps, more sprites, and custom animations and moves that can be run on the genesis, which is a less powerful system than the GBA. I think it could be achievable because astroboy also had amazing sprites that seem to interact with things like lights, and the GBA handled games with 3d too. But I see ur point

@@unknown-vy2iu Doom isn't really "fully 3D" it's just an advanced raycaster, with multiple levels (which I didn't know until recently was actually possible without full 3d, but apparently it is!). It uses flat textures for walls, which are made of flat lines, and extruded to *look* 3D, and uses regular scaling sprites for enemies. Crazy Taxi at least tried to use polygons, but I still consider it a failure like most of the 3D attempts on the GBA.

There are some screen modes which are tile based and others that are totally linear pixel buffers, which is perfect for software renderers. Resolution is quite smaller than in other consoles/computers of the time, and the ARM CPU while not high frequency, could still do a lot if programmed well. There are plenty of demoscene demos and 3d commercial games on the GBA.
