I wanna talk about the situation with the Brazillian price on Steam. I bought GBVS standard version, I had a lot of fun with the game, played through the entirety of the Story Mode, bought all of the in game artwork, music and said "Y'know what? I think I will buy the Legendary Version of the game to play with all of the characters". This was the first fighting game that got me hooked from the start, not only giving me a BR-PT translation, that aside from DBFZ, ONLY Granblue has, and great gameplay. Was I able to play online? Yes, with a couple of friends who live in Brazil, but I had a great time. So when Rising was announced I was so happy "WOW I will be able to play with friends with a great netcode and be able to spread the word of Granblue around!". But the one thing I didn't talk about was how much I paid for GBVS, I paid around R$3,20 when it was on sale, and then got the Legendary Version for around R$33,00, the price of the base game when it's not on sale, and so you guys know the Legendary Version was around R$70,00, which I thought it was fair, it had all the characters with cosmetics not included for some of them, but I ended up unlocking them by playing the RPG Mode, which is really fun. And then, this week, I was waiting for the price to be shown on Steam, I played the Beta previously with friends, and most of them loved the game, so I wanted to buy the game because I created an attachment to it. When the price dropped, I was shocked. R$264,00 for the base version of the game, the Deluxe Edition double that price, and the battle pass the same price as the base game, Steam didn't localize the game's price and doubled the suggested price. Imagine how this will affect the national scene for GBVSR, If it has not already. Sorry for the long comment, but I wanted to talk about this.

It's not a free to play game, it's a demo. The rotation means that they can catch people who want to play specific characters without having to have all characters available in the demo.

I mean, the free version is largely meant to be more so of a demo to the game that has online access. Most fighters probably couldn't sustain a free to play model without going under quickly so I'm glad its basically just a full release with a nice demo version

You forgot one more monetization model for fighting games before Killer Instinct popularized the season pass model... one mostly unused these days, but was a huge problem back in the day... the SF2 monetization model... pay full-price for a balance update, packaged as "the next edition" of the game... multiple times. SF2 did this so much it pretty much became one of the earliest Japanese video game memes even before the era of internet, lol... There's a reason SF2 still remains the best-selling SF game in the franchise. The many editions, rereleases, and ports of its various editions bloated the sales of the SF2 series by a whole lot.

the only real issue i have with the free verssion is the no custom lobbies thing. i love casual clothes gran. he looks very nice and comfy

Live service games also work only for substantially larger playerbases than fighting games usually have. I’m not surprised they experimented, but I’d love to buy Narmaya alone, but there would need to be 10.000 of mes buying it to justify it, I think, because for every me who buys a single character there’s like 30 characters that aren’t bought and thus justified their dev cycle. I wish it could work somehow, but I can’t see any other way than having a gigantic playerbase.

The main disagreement I have with this video, is that if this game was full on live service, getting all the characters out of the gate would absolutely cost you like $80 or more, by sticking to a primarily box price and just having a free version as an extended demo, this helps fix that issue. Being massively overcharged for the dlc if you didn;t instantly commit to the deluxe edition like I didn't because I wasn't sure I'd have the extra £22 at the time but I wanted to screw around with a bunch of characters with friends on my birthday for fun, feels so bad.

Huh, I honestly love that monetisation is leaning into the cosmetics/cards etc perfectly happy for them to be restricted in the free version. Really hope this model works out, it kinda seems like a permanent demo which might also help keep player numbers up

Damn I'm broke and have my issues with the release of Granblue but damn imagine telling devs "Oh you wanted to sell your game for a base price? Fuck you" thats crazy, people like should get payed for their work & however they decide that pay should come should be their decision. What happens when you price out each character is if someone buys 1 character then tries out other characters on rotation and likes them then buys that character? They have now dropped 1/5th of the games price, if they like even more characters you are just wasting money not buying the full game when you get around to 5 characters. I dislike the season 1 pricing too but if my ass really thinks Ima want everything included in it I'll just wait till I have the money for the deluxe edition cause that's 15$ less then buying the pass

I usually agree with everything you do, but this one I think may have come from misunderstanding of what this was meant to be. Its meant to be a demo, like the old school ones that basically were a 30 minute movie. And tbh, as a demo, this is VERY lenient for what a Demo is supposed to be. The private lobbies I do definitely understand. Now if this was meant to be a free game with a premium option (Like some mmos for example), then I get it. But this is definitely meant to be a free demo that you’d see in the xbox games shop back in 2010

The free version seems purely to let people try out the game to see if they think its worth getting the full game. The limitations make sense, because if you're that into it then going out of your way for the full game seems worth it. I'd rather the free version exists to let people see if they enjoy the system, then to cut it out completely because it adds fairly arbitrary limits to cosmetics. I don't think feeling the free version sucks is a mark against the full game.

Imma be fully honest at this point in the video 10:18 your complaint is just buy the game free players are on that version to try the game they don't intend for u to play the free version and go play tournaments and thats the same reason why you can't buy each character specifically and why you can't join a room you aren't meant to be able to do more then just try the game

I personally really like that they have a free version, even though I'm having a ton of fun with the game I definitely don't plan on buying the full version, it's just way too expensive due to the lack of regional pricing. I've had to miss out on so many games recently because absolutely no one seems to care about adding regional pricing, I'm pretty sure the only fighting games I've bought from the last 3 years are strive, which I dropped after getting bored of the base cast and realizing they had removed regional pricing so I couldn't get the dlcs, and yomi hustle which has regional pricing despite only being $5. After having a ton of fun with the granblue beta I was fully resigned to the game releasing without regional pricing and not being able to buy it, so the game having a free version, limited as it is, I was extremely happy about, I definitely see myself grinding the game long-term with whoever comes up on the rotation Also this is probably a hot take but I 100% prefer this to an actual f2p model, f2p sucks the enjoyment out of a game like nothing else because it turns it into a chore rather than something you play for fun. I wouldn't have enjoyed playing zeta on the free version if I had only been doing it to grind for a different character I actually wanted to play, I could focus on actually having fun with the game instead. f2p monetization turns everything you do into a grind rather than a fun activity and it makes you lose sight of why you play the game in the first place, I have yet to find a single f2p game that isn't made worse by its monetization

You're right. Which is to say I'm going to tell you you're wrong. The easiest encapsulation of the irony is that Killer Instinct despite being wildly popular and and amazing game was an absolute financial flop. Because that sort of business model simply doesn't generate the amount of money needed to offset the cost. The short version is, players are entitled. I bought Street Fighter 2. In 1992. For SEVENTY DOLLARS. In 1992. And that game cost SUBSTANTIALLY less than 1% to make as a modern game. Games shouldn't be $70. They SHOULD be $200+ to account for inflation and rising production costs. That's the simple math. So the only way these games survive at the "Discounted" price of $70 is by finding other sources of income. So to say that even $70 is still too much to pay is just out of touch and tone deaf.

I'm just sitting here asking What is Killer Instinct chopped liver?! Completely free base game with character rotation and the ability to only buy characters you are interested in, two free characters that are permanent (IIRC) for just participating in the shadow lords mode (rogue like campaign) and a full roster version that is far cheaper than some full price games by a significant margin But gran blue seems to be doing interesting things in this vein

I think my biggest issue is that there is no way for you to unlock characters for free. Most live service games are pay for char or pay time for char. League has a free rotation but many ways to unlock the champion with game time which keeps the player base going. It's a goal. Otherwise the rest is okay. Even if they give you only two characters before you have to buy but in fighting games likely you only want one or two characters so sadly that wouldn't be good monetization. It's not really F2P it's a demo/trial because of that. The rest of it works like Gran Bruise.

The Free Version is designed to give you access to the bare minimum of content in the game and entice you into buying it while feeding numbers to make a bigger playerbase. But it also seems to be designed to annoy you into a full purchase by limiting certain things. Not that shocking but I'm numb at this point so most disappointment is just within expectations. Heck just having a free mode feels like a shockingly kind gesture so this is just the monkey's paw.

Bro... it's a free trail... the only problem is the "no room lobby". But otherwise, it's literally meant to be a TRAIL, it's not designed to be played for long. The REAL problem with this game is the absurd lack of marketing for the F2P.

If this was just a 50 dollar fighting game, mostly no one would complain, but the fact that they also have very generous free demo with a ton of gameplay to it makes people feel entitled to more. Seems kinda nuts to me. I would love to be able to spend like 5 bucks for my main and have full access to the online modes of the game, but I'm also not mad that the devs don't want to double down on that risky business model. Also, complaining about this is just gonna lead other games to stick to more bare bones demos.

It’s hilarious that they made a free demo that lets you access 80% of the content and instead of being grateful people just want to complain about the little bit of content they can’t access for free. The price complaints are also silly considering it’s a $50 game in a world where every other fighting game is $60 or $70.

The deluxe character pass1 ($50 USD) shouldnt be bought because because the deluxe edition of the game ($75) it includes the deluxe character pass1. After the first dlc character drops, they going to have a regular character pass which includes all of the 6 dlc characters for $35. It's a bit confusing. The difference between the deluxe character pass and the regular character pass (that drops later) is just costumes, colors and weapon skins. Which can be earned in game with the exception of the costumes

They want you to buy the game. Why would anyone buy the full game if you can just buy the characters you want. It’s a free version and they allow you to do a lot. I’m on the free version rn, sucks you can’t join a private lobby tho. Other than that it served its purpose, I will be buying the game soon, they put alot of care in the game, a lot more than 99% of fighting game devs. There’s fair points but I like it for what it is, if you like something you should support it, if not don’t.. simple. DOA5 Last round had my favorite way of implementing F2P Fighter. It rotated the characters you could play arcade, Vs, and Online till infinitime. But the best part is if you really enjoyed a character you can buy that character alone withought getting the full game. And if you wanted to just buy all the characters for the price of the game. The biggest thing they monetized was outfits which makes sense since fortnight basically does the same thing.

To me the primary selling point to a fighting game is finding a character you really enjoy and this free edition makes this incredibly hard. I get its a compromise between letting us try out characters and not just giving us the entire thing for free but frankly I don't feel like waiting week after week to hopefully have it randomly pick the characters I wanna try.

I get your point, but the free edition is meant to be a demo, something you use to gauge your interest in the game and decide if you want to make the purchase or not. As far as demos go, I don't think a better on in the whole gaming exists. If you like the game, BUY IT!! SF6 demo doesn't even let you play online, think about that.

This video is confusing. You start by saying that the monetization model fighting games have is full price game plus fighter passes. which is somehow not live service to you. Then you say they're now STARTING to adopt overpriced live service features... Buddy, Strive is now a 40$ game with 75$ worth of season passes and fairly frequently gets updates (to say nothing of the paid color packs....) The "season pass" model ALREADY matches your live service definition and Strive is just one example. There's Tekken, DBFZ, and so on before it. Don't try to justify the bad monetization of older titles that you play. Fighting games have been going on a downhill slope for a while now in regards to price vs value. This dude missed by a long shot with this video. You can unlock weapons skins and outfits AND currency by leveling up characters. If you for a free version of the game, god forbid there’s something you can’t access. Stop focusing on the 20% that isn’t there. So like, you had me for a lil while, and then you made a big stinker about Battlepasses and how the free-to-play demo version, the version that's whole point is to see if you would like the fighting game in the first place, doesn't give you full control of the game. Like, pick a side. Either you like the free option, or you don't. You contradict yourself here lad. I remember voicing my concerns about CURRENTLY THE ONLY character pass (the deluxe one) being the same price as the base game on the GBFVS Discord server by saying it was odd and kinda greedy from ArcSys and whatever company that owns Granblue and got clowned for it. There are some people here are defending the fact the game is free, their restrictions and how some if not alot of players won't stay to play the game, meanwhile im scratching my head on why they want us to buy a gloryfied remake of this game. In my opinion: Fuck Battle Passes if you're going to charge for gameplay content. However if you provide the gameplay-related content and updates (AKA Maps/Modes/Characters/Weapons) for free, then I'll accept the Battle Pass. I feel like that is a fair trade to be able to keep everyone on the same gameplay level/content so no one gets left out; but no double dipping by charging for both gameplay AND cosmetics.

when the game was announced as f2p i was pretty hyped, feel like it was a bit misleading overall though. It really is more of a demo than anything, which is fine but going f2p and missing out on basic training mode stuff is pretty hindering. usually f2p games are a viable way to play. Also i think the title is pretty fair, he didn't say its bad just not great, i think good is a pretty fair label. its basically free to try, not a live service model.

Djeeta should be free with Gran as well. DOA5 and KI had the best FTP versions of a fighter I’ve tried so far.

I think there are a couple of things they can take away from mobile games/live service (I know that sounds bad) like having something like room matches or customization locked behind an initial purchase. Like say you spent $5.00, then you would have access to some customization and joining room matches (you couldn't make rooms as you would need to own the game to do so). Also if you buy a character you unlock the full progression track for said character, allowing you to grind with the character. I don't know what that singular purchase price needs to be to both feel fair to someone who just wants to one trick and enjoy everything but with slight restrictions and make sense for Cygames. I can see having a $10 bundle with a character and some colors for the character, the avatar, and the partner and that including some "VIP" unlock granting the missing features.

This is something developers and even critics need to understand and it's so obvious and baffling that they fail to learn this: in multiplayer games, players are the content. So having more players in your game only improves the quality of your game. Yes it seems like the devs will never make any money if everyone can just buy one character but how many of those that would have bought one character paid full price for the game? You could go as high as $10 per character and it would still be a fair price.

The thing that really hurts this game fot me is the fact that it doesn't have regional pricing on Steam. i can buy SF6 for 45$ (30$ rn since its on sale), T8 will cost 56$. So there's really no reason to buy a niche game for even more or around the same price. Also speaking about niche games that i could buy instead of this, UNI2 is HALF THE PRICE OF THIS, God bless French Bread for respecting people with shitty currencies. I've been playing the Free Version and mostly enjoying it, but theres really not enough for me to spend that much money, maybe it if ever goes on sale for 50% ill get it.

I downloaded the "free edition", played through the arcade once with Sieg, uninstalled it. Why? Because I bought GBVS on launch, I also bought a lot of it's DLC characters. The reason I wasn't impressed by Rising was simple: it's 90% the exact same game. Just with a handful of new characters, crossplay, rollback netcode and a new mechanic. Paying full price for a new edition of the same game is too rich for me. It's Super Street Fighter 4. And guess who doesn't do Super Street Fighter anymore? Capcom. They stopped doing that for a good reason. But here we have Cygames and Arcsys doing the thing that Street Fighter stopped doing 8 years ago. Also, I remember that Capcom offered a substantial discount for owners of Street Fighter 4 when Super was released. It was like 50-75%. Rising on the other doesn't respect me as a customer of GBVS at all. I refuse to pay twice. Or thrice as you say.

I completely agree, adding a ton of live service stuff in a nearly full price, or straight up full price game like SF6 is ridiculous. While I don't mind switching characters every week, having to pay $70 to just play the character I want to main is hard to justify unless I'm playing in bracket which I likely won't be as the game isn't popular in my province. They should've committed if live service is what they were aiming for.

Why couldn't they just replicate Brawlhalla's tactic? Granblue already has the polish and overall content over brawlhalla. They could just make it so the base roster of the first game is free, Then use the in-game currency to earn the rest of the characters or BUY them and the characters of season 1 for a certain price. I guess I'm going to have to wait till Project L to come out to finally get my Traditional Fighter Brawlhalla like I always dreamed of.

I hope they will at least allow to unlock characters with coins. I don't mind grinding for it.

I usually get ignored when I say this but the best (and maybe only) live service fighting game has always been Brawlhalla and there the characters are not only unlockable by playing the game itself, but you can buy an "All characters" bundle with a fixed 30€ price (sometimes on sale too) that by the way not only includes all characters in the game, but also all future characters. Why? Because the monetization has to come from the cosmetics; skins, taunts, weapons, etc. Plus the Battle pass system has worked REALLY well for them. Oh and also you have unlocked all characters and skins by default in training mode so not only you can lab characters you don't have, you can also try skins to see if you want to spend the money to get them. Live service fighting games can be absolutely done well, but I'd say its developers (mostly japanese) are taking a lot of wrong decissions trying to get with the times. They took ages to do proper adaptations for console because they were stuck with arcade models, now its taking time too for them to realize how could they be profiting way more money by making the games free to play and improving their monetization strategies.

So, i feel like 90% of the criticisms here are suuuuper nitpicky, at best. No customizable avatars is bad, i guess. But I feel like a person who cares about that specifically, has played a lot already. Someone who played dozens of hours, who has a couple of cool avatars to actually switch to. The example you used supports this. What new player would be able to get an avatar for beating arcade mode on Nightmare? For custom lobbies, it is dumb that you can't join private lobbies, its still pretty incidental. Sure you can't join tournaments as the best Gran player of all time, but that is such an unlikely scenario that I'm convinced that it won't happen. Though, to be fair, it's possible for smaller tournys, or more likey, private rooms that this could be a problem. But again, what new player is gonna be good enough to enter tournaments. By the time you invested enough time and effort to be good enough, you'd probably buy the game anyways. As a lot of people have pointed out in the comments, this is a demo. It literally says its a demo on Steam. Honestly, I'm gonna check the game out now, because of the video. And if I like the game enough, I'll get the full version. If I don't, I'll uninstall and do something else. That's kinda the point.

As a Free Gran main, the awkward situation in tourneys is my biggest worry. A solution is to mention “F2P friendly” in the tourneys so they allow screen share matches on stream. But TOs can just as easily deny entry for free players otherwise… which is fair as buying the game can be considered entry fee. Even if I hate to say it.

I think what i woukd wish for is let us pick 1 character for the free rotation. Like instead of giving us gram garunteed let us pick out of the roster each week, then you can test out characters OR stick with your main when you want to. And at least let free players join custom rooms even if you wont let them make one lol

well that was 15 mins straight of gekko being mad than the demo is a demo. You dont miss often but when ya do. The dlc is too expensive but other than that. you wouldnt be complaining about a 50$ game

My biggest thing is that I strongly feel like the stem of a lot of these issues just come from Cygames portion of the game. I think they could of actually just updated the base game over time, and actually make this work out. Give a free version of the game? that's fine. I care more about playing with friends, GIVE me the ability to have custom lobbies with friends. AT LEAST give the free players the ability to join, maybe not create. (like in ff14 trial, you can't make parties, but you can still join them) I really wish this was instead of "rising" this was more similar to how they did Rev2. I appreciate that rev came out, I didn't play, but I could upgrade to 2, and get whatever I wanted much much later in the game cycle. Maybe it's not too late, they could totally do that, but I just don't think the game changes and cast is worth the crazy price point when I know I don't even want to play the game overall. I bought like, the first game for full price on release, what was it, like 80 bucks? and I only played maybe 40ish hours, and I feel like I didn't get my monies worth. Even with the free version, it feels like the game doesn't warrant a purchase. Maybe I'm wrong and it gets much better soon, but I still have hope that they'll at least make the game more fun without just bogging it up with transactions that don't really matter.

Sorry man but I disagree with a lot of complaints you mentioned. All of the extra things are very shallow and superficial and you don:t really need them. At least I am a person who rarely buys extra costumes unless I find them SUPER COOL. While I do agree that the industry is getting a tad greedy, I feel your reaction is a tad bit overblown. Not saying is wrong, but I don:t fully agree. The one complaint I agree with is not being able to join private matches on the free version, wtf?

I agree that $50 is crazy from dlc pass but you can get it for much cheaper by buying the deluxe editing which comes out to the standard price from most modern games today anyways. I see no reason why anyone should buy the standard edition. I personally couldn’t afford the game right at launch but I knew that i would probably want the dlc characters at some point so i just waited and saved for my next pay check. The free version is great. It lets you play the game and gives you a rotating cast of characters. Of course they aren’t going to give you all the features of the full game. It sucks that you have all your unlocked content stuck behind a pay wall, they could have made it so you just can’t unlock things in the free version, but idk if that stuff carries over if you upgrade to the full game or not in which case being able to unlock things is a good thing. Going back to the dlc. Yes $50 is a lot but it’s not like you’re paying $50 for cosmetics. These are 6 full blown characters. 6. That is 2 more new characters than the base game added at launch. And fighting game characters require a lot to make. It’s not as simple as getting a model (which already costs a good penny) and sticking the basic controls onto the character, they have to get the model, hire 2 voice actors (JP and EN), create a balanced move set that makes sense with the character, create all new animations since characters don’t reuse animations from each other and then in guest characters cases, pay a license fee. $50 hurts but it kind of makes sense. The reason the base game standard edition is only $50 is because all but 4 characters are returning characters with mostly the same animations, voice lines and move sets, with a bit of new stuff thrown in for the new game mechanics. I think this is a great way of doing it because it ensures we don’t loose characters and the game can be more affordable. If the game instead replaced half the roster and redesigned the returning characters the it most certainly would not be $50 and the deluxe edition would probably be closer to $110 and wed have a smaller roster. So all in all I think GBFVS Rising actually does a pretty good job. I will say though, I’m not a huge fan of skins being locked behind limited time battle passes. They should be permanent if they want to include them in battle passes

Fantasy Strike also went free to play. They made a commitment to never charge for characters (so you never need to pay to win). Of course, they charged for cosmetics in a shop that rotated stuff out every day. The free edition gives access to the random queues, single matches against CPU, and training mode, with the rest of the features available for $20. Unfortunately, the game is no longer supported because it was a financial disaster. So, take from that what you will.

Considering how well fighters seem to fit the F2P model I'm puzzled that this hasn't been much of a thing and it hadn't come sooner. They already make a ton of DLC and nickle and dime people, the only thing that'd change is not having a box prize. Which is a big deal but it'd also mean that more people would play.

You know why they won't do free with rotating characters but you can buy it, because someone already did it. In Dead or Alive 5 and 6 you can get the game for free and buy only the characters you want without having to buy the full game. BUT... Dead or Alive has such a bad reputation in the FGC that developers refuse to take advice from one of the best models for a free almost live service fighting game. EDIT: also should mention that they messed up royally with pricing each character was 15 dollars and an outfit was 5-6 dollars, and Season passes were 100 dollars.

See here’s the thing for me: I’m fine with whatever they wanna do, but I payed 50 bucks for GBVS, so I feel like I should have gotten SOME form of discount, especially since I bought that game almost day one. There could have easily been some sort of “GBVS save file detected, transfer save file over” feature where I could AT LEAST kept my characters.

Personally I tried the free version and realized the game really wasn't my cup of tea at all, without it I might have bought the full game on sale eventually

Charging piece meal for each feature like you suggested sounds like some EA bullshit ngl. On the other hand saying you just want to "make it better for everyone" while earlier also saying they should have commited to a price tag and not let people try it for free seems backwards as hell to me aswell. If you really wanted to just make the free version better there is s very somple way of doing it, just like any MOBA on the goddamn planet, have a free character of each archetype (zoner, grappler etc) unlocked for free premanantly, let people join rooms... thats it, if customization is what you want then buy the game, its not absolutely core to playing the game there for its locked behind a paywall. Also it did just sound like you were smadge about not being able to play seigfrid. But season pass price is still dogshit i agree

it's very great, I've dumped 20 hours into this game and triple digit matches and have yet to get tired of the 3 chars I can use, luckily djeeta and zeta were ones I used in the first game, and sieg is just heckin amazing....gran boring tho. actually my only nitpick about the free edition is that it should be 5 characters and that If gran is permanent, naturally his female counterpart should be too, they are literally the same existence. so make it Gran/Djeeta to more accurately reflect the game it's source material is from, then 3 rotations. oh and since I only play with my friends the lack of room match is an inconvenience as I have to find a lobby empty enough for my friends and I to all cram into. Though speaking honestly, the ONLY reason I'm free to play is I want djeetas eternal skin so I refuse to buy normal and I'm sale-waiting to get deluxe for reduced price.
